  • A general purpose program NUFLEX has been extended for two-phase flows with topologically complex interface and cavitation flows with liquid-vapor phase change caused by large pressure drop. In analysis of two-phase flow, the phase interfaces are tracked by employing a LS(Level Set) method. Compared with the VOF(Volume-of-Fluid} method based on a non-smooth volume-fraction function, the LS method can calculate an interfacial curvature more accurately by using a smooth distance function. Also, it is quite straightforward to implement for 3-D irregular meshes compared with the VOF method requiring much more complicated geometric calculations. Also, the cavitation process is computed by including the effects of evaporation and condensation for bubble formation and collapse as well as turbulence in flows. The volume-faction and continuity equations are adapted for cavitation models with phase change. The LS and cavitation formulation are implemented into a general purpose program for 3-D flows and verified through several test problems.

  • Melt-textured growth of the YBa2Cu3O7-x phase from a supercooled melt created locally aligned, barshaped grains of the orthorhombic 1-2-3 phase. Based on all the observed phenomena, the gross mechanism of the melt-textrued growth of YBa2Cu3O7-x on the (100) plane of MgO was delineated by three basic patterns of reactions. These are : (ⅰ) formation of the aligned 1-2-3 phase and the Y-rich 2-1-1 phase at the bulk region away from the (100) plane of MgO ; (ⅱ) formation of the Cu-richprecipitates at the interfacial region by the selective interface-induced precipitation of the liquid phase ; (ⅲ) condensation reaction of the entrapped Cu-rich vapor with Mg atoms during the initial stage of rapid cooling from 130$0^{\circ}C$ to 98$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Membrane Distillation(MD) is reviewed as an application to new separation technology. Hydrophobic membrane which has been used to microfiltration is feasible material for MD process. MD has perfect selectivity under moderate temperature and is promised to simplify typical water treatment process. The principle of MD separation is phase transition by vapor-liquid interface at the pore of membrane surface. Feed and permeate temperature, composition, membrane wetting, heat and mass transfer phenomena affect the selectivity and flux of MD.

  • The coolability of the debris bed with a simulant of solidified corium is experimentally studied, focusing on the effects of the structure of the axial stratified debris bed on the dryout heat flux (DHF). DHF was obtained for the four structures with different particle sizes for the axial stratified debris bed under top flooding. The experimental results show that the dryout position of the axial stratified debris bed is formed at the stratified interface indicated by the temperature rise, and the DHF of the axial stratified bed is much lower than that of the homogeneous bed packed with the upper small particles. To predict the dryout heat flux of the stratified debris beds, by considering the properties of the mixed area, a one-dimensional dryout heat flux model of the porous medium is derived from a water and vapor momentum equation for porous medium, two-phase permeability modifications, interfacial drag, and the correlation between capillary pressure and liquid saturation and verified with the experimental data. The modified model can give reasonable results under different structures.

  • Numerical simulation is performed for nucleate boiling on a micro-finned surface, which has been widely used to enhance heat transfer, by solving the equations governing the conservation of mass, momentum, and energy in the liquid and vapor phases. The bubble motion is determined by a sharp-interface level-set method, which is modified to include the effect of phase change and to treat the no-slip and contact-angle conditions, as well as the evaporative heat flux from the liquid microlayer on immersed solid surfaces such as micro fins and cavities. The numerical results for bubble formation, growth, and departure on a microstructured surface including fins and cavities show that the bubble behavior during nucleate boiling is significantly influenced by the fin-cavity arrangement and the fin-fin spacing.

  • In influence of the vapor phase turbulent stress (i.e., the too-phase Reynolds stress) to the characteristics of two-phase system in a horizontal pipe has been theoretically investigated. The average two-fluid model has been constituted with closure relations for stratified flow in a horizontal pipe. A vapor phase turbulent stress model for the regular interface geometry has been included. It is found that the second order waves propagate in opposite direction with almost the same speed in the moving frame of reference of the liquid phase velocity. Using the well-posedness limit of the two-phase system, the dispersed-stratified How regime boundary has been modeled. Two-phase Froude number has been found to be a convenient parameter in quantifying the onset of slugging as a function of the global void fraction. The influence of the taper phase turbulent stress was found to stabilize the flow stratification.

  • Two-phase flow and heat transfer characteristics during the reflood phase of a single heated rod in the KHU reflood experimental facility were examined. Two-phase flow behavior during the reflooding experiment was carefully visualized along with transient temperature measurement at a point inside the heated rod. By numerically solving one-dimensional inverse heat conduction equation using the measured temperature data, time-resolved wall heat flux and temperature histories at the interface of the heated rod and coolant were obtained. Once water coolant was injected into the test section from the bottom to reflood the heated rod of >700℃, vast vapor bubbles and droplets were generated near the reflood front and dispersed flow film boiling consisted of continuous vapor flow and tiny liquid droplets appeared in the upper part. Following the dispersed flow film boiling, inverted annular/slug/churn flow film boiling regimes were sequentially observed and the wall temperature gradually decreased. When so-called minimum film boiling temperature reached, the stable vapor film between the heated rod and coolant was suddenly collapsed, resulting in the quenching transition from film boiling into nucleate boiling. The moving speed of the quench front measured in the present study showed a good agreement with prediction by a correlation in literature. The obtained results revealed that typical two-phase flow and heat transfer behaviors during the reflood phase of overheated fuel rods in light water nuclear reactors are well reproduced in the KHU facility. Thus, the verified reflood experimental facility can be used to explore the effects of other affecting parameters, such as CRUD, on the reflood heat transfer behaviors in practical nuclear reactors.

  • Heat dissipation technology for semiconductors and electronic packaging has a substantial impact on performance and lifespan, but efficient heat dissipation is currently facing limited improvement. Owing to the high integration density in electronic packaging, heat dissipation components must become thinner and increase their performance. Therefore, heat dissipation materials are being devised considering conductive heat transfer, carbon-based directional thermal conductivity improvements, functional heat dissipation composite materials with added fillers, and liquid-metal thermal interface materials. Additionally, in heat dissipation structure design, 3D printing-based complex heat dissipation fins, packages that expand the heat dissipation area, chip embedded structures that minimize contact thermal resistance, differential scanning calorimetry structures, and through-silicon-via technologies and their replacement technologies are being actively developed. Regarding dry cooling using single-phase and phase-change heat transfer, technologies for improving the vapor chamber performance and structural diversification are being investigated along with the miniaturization of heat pipes and high-performance capillary wicks. Meanwhile, in wet cooling with high heat flux, technologies for designing and manufacturing miniaturized flow paths, heat dissipating materials within flow paths, increasing heat dissipation area, and reducing pressure drops are being developed. We also analyze the development of direct cooling and immersion cooling technologies, which are gradually expanding to achieve near-junction cooling.

  • We validated the performance of RELAP MOD3.3 code regarding the hybrid SIT with available experimental data. The concept of the hybrid SIT is to connect the pressurizer to SIT to utilize the water inside SIT in the case of SBO or SB-LOCA combined with TLOFW. We investigated how well RELAP5 code predicts the physical phenomena in terms of the equilibrium time, stratification, condensation against Separate Effect Test (SET) data. We also conducted the validation of RELAP5 code against Integrated Effect Test (IET) experimental data produced by the ATLAS facility. We followed conventional approach for code validation of IET data, which are pre-test and post-test calculation. RELAP5 code shows substantial difference with changing number of nodes. The increase of the number of nodes tends to reduce the condensation rate at the interface between liquid and vapor inside the hybrid SIT. The environmental heat loss also contributes to the large discrepancy between the simulation results of RELAP5 and the experimental data.

  • InAs nanowires were synthesized by a vapor-liquid-solid method with InAs powder. The composition and crystalline structure of nanowires were confirmed by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), respectively. The thermal conduction of nanowires was investigated by the optical method using Raman spectroscopy: i.e., the local temperature on nanowire was determined by laser heating. As temperature increased, the Raman peaks are shifted to low frequency and broadened. The temperature dependent Raman scattering experiments was realized on InAs nanowires with different percentages of zinc-blende and wurtzite structure. The temperature dependence on the nanowire structure has been successfully obtained: the phonon scattering was more increased in InAs heretostructure nanowires, compared to the InAs nanowires with homostructure. The result strongly suggests that the thermal conduction can be effectively controlled by ordered interface without any decrease in electrical conduction.
