  • The effect of $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ additives on fracture toughness of $\beta-SiC-TiB_2$ composites by hot-pressed sintering were investigated. The f$\beta-SiC-TiB_2$ ceramic composites were hot-presse sintered and annealed by adding 16, 20, 24wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$(6 : 4wt%) powder as a liquid forming additives at low temperature($1800^{\circ}C$) for 4h. In this microstructures, the relative density is over 95.88% of the theoretical density and the porosity increased with increasing $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ contents because of the increasing tendency of pore formation. The fracture toughness showed the highest of $5.88MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composites added with 20wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest of $5.22{\times}10^{-4}\Omega{\cdot}cm$ for composite added with 20wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ additives at room temperature and is all positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) against temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$.

  • This study focuses on the effects of doping $Zn_2BiVO_6$ and $Co_3O_4$ on the sintering and electrical properties of ZnO; where, ZZ consists of 0.5 mol% $Zn_2BiVO_6$ in ZnO, and ZZCo consists of 1/3 mol% $Co_3O_4$ in ZZ. As ZnO was sintered at about $800^{\circ}C$, the liquid phases, which are composed of $Zn_2BiVO_6$ and $Zn_2BiVO_6$-rich phases, were found to be segregated at the grain boundaries of sintered ZZ and ZZCo, respectively, which demonstrates that $V_o^{\cdot}$(0.33~0.36 eV) are formed as dominant defects according to the analysis of admittance spectroscopy. As $Co_3O_4$ is doped to ZZ, the resistivity of ZnO decreases to ~38%, while donor density ($N_d$), interface state density ($N_t$), and barrier height (${\Phi}_b$) increase twice higher than those of ZZ, according to C-V characteristics. This result harbingers that ZZCo and its derivative compositions will open the gate for ZnO to be applied as more progressive varistors in the future, as well as the advantageous opportunity of manufacturing ZnO chip varistors at lower sintering temperatures below $900^{\circ}C$.

  • The lead zirconate titanate (PZT) powders were synthesized to make the piezoelectric ceramics in low temperature as low as $900^{\circ}C$. To investigate the influence of additives on sintering of PZT, two kinds of sintering aids were made as follows; $wB_2O_3-xBi_2O_3-zCuO$and LiBiO2-CuO. The sintering aid, $1{\sim}3$ wt.% $LiBiO_2-CuO$, was added into these PZT powders and the specimens were fired at temperature in the range of $800{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$. The highest density was shown in the specimen with 1 wt.% $LiBiO_2-CuO$ as additive at temperature of $900^{\circ}C$. The sintered specimen were analyzed by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was utilized to observe the microstructure, especially the densified morphology of specimens. In the XRD pattern, the well-crystallized PZT phase could be obtained in consequence of firing at $900^{\circ}C$. The scanning electron microscopy(SEM) was utilized to observe the structure of specimens after firing at $900^{\circ}C$. The densified perovskite structure of $PbZrTiO_3$ could be obtained by sintering at temperature as low as $900^{\circ}C$. The high sinterability of PZT ceramics was attributed to the low formation temperature of the liquid phase of additives.

  • This study introduces a new investigation report on the microstructural and electrical property changes of $ZnO-Zn_2BiVO_6-Mn_3O_4$ (ZZMn), where 0.33 mol% of $Mn_3O_4$ and 0.5 mol% of $Zn_2BiVO_6$ were added to ZnO (99.17 mol%) as liquid phase sintering aids. $Zn_2BiVO_6$ contributes to the decrease of sintering temperatures by up to $800^{\circ}C$, and segregates its particles at the grain boundary, while $Mn_3O_4$ enhances ${\alpha}$, the nonlinear coefficient, of varistor properties up to ${\alpha}=62$. In comparison, when the sintering temperature is increased from $800^{\circ}C$ to $1,000^{\circ}C$, the resistivity of ZnO grains decreases from $0.34{\Omega}cm$ to $0.16{\Omega}cm$, and the varistor property degrades. Oxygen vacancy ($V_o^{\bullet}$) (P1, 0.33~0.36 eV) is formed as a dominant defect. Two different kinds of grain boundary activation energies of P2 (0.51~0.70 eV) and P3 (0.70~0.93 eV) are formed according to different sintering temperatures, which are tentatively attributed to be $ZnO/Zn_2BiVO_6$-rich interface and ZnO/ZnO interface, respectively. Accordingly, this study introduces a progressive method of manufacturing ZnO chip varistors by way of sintering ZZMn-based varistor under $900^{\circ}C$. However, to procure a higher reliability, an in-depth study on the multi-component varistors with double-layer grain boundaries should be executed.

  • The paper studies spark plasma sintering (SPS) of industrially used UO2-based fuel containing integral fuel burnable absorber (IFBA) of neutrons Gd2O3. Densification dynamics of pristine UO2 powder and the one added with 2 and 8 wt% of Gd2O3 under ultrasonication in liquid has been studied under SPS conditions at 1050, 1250, and 1450 ℃. Effect of sintering temperature on phase composition as well as on O/U stoichiometry has been investigated for UO2 SPS ceramics. Sintering of uranium dioxide added with Gd2O3 yields solid solution (U,Gd)O2, which is isostructural to UO2. SEM with EDX and metallography were implemented to analyze the microstructure of the obtained UO2 ceramics and composite UO2-Gd2O3 one, particularly, open porosity, defects, and Gd2O3 distribution were studied. Microhardness, compressive strength and density were shown to reduce after addition of Gd2O3. Obtained results prove the hypothesis on formation of stable pores in the system of UO2-Gd2O3 due to Kirkendall effect that reduces sintering efficiency. The paper expands fundamental knowledge on pros and cons of fuel fabrication with IFBA using SPS technology.

  • The semiconducting ceramics having positive temperature coefficient of resistivity in he family of 0.25mol% $Sb_2O_3$ doped barium titanates were prepared with AST ($4Al_2O_3$.$9SiO_2$.$3TiO_2$) and $MnO_2$ as additives and these electrical properties were investigated. The PTCR characteristic in these ceramic materials was improved by the addition of AST and $MnO_2$ because the addition of AST decreased the room temperature resistivity and controlled grin size due to the formation of a liquid phase during sintering and the addition of $MnO_2$ improved by forming acceptor level on the intergranular layer. On dependence on the switching time as switching temperature was increased the initial power and switching time increased.

  • In the last (fourth) section, the discussion will entail a silicon-nitride/silicon-carbide nanocomposite, produced by pyrolysis of liquid polymer precursors, demonstrating one of the lowest creep rates reported so far in ceramics at the comparable temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$. This was first achieved by avoiding the oxynitride glass phase at the intergrain boundaries. One important factor in the processing of these nanocomposites was the use of the electrical field assisted sintering method.

  • The effect of additive composition, using AlN and $Er_{2}O_{3}$ as sintering additives, on the mechanical properties of liquid-phase-sintered, and subsequently annealed SiC ceramics was investigated. The microstructures developed were quantitatively analyzed by image analysis. The average thickness of SiC grains increased with increasing the $Er_{2}O_{3}/(AlN + Er_{2}O_{3})$ ratio in the additives whereas the aspect ratio decreased with increasing the ratio. The mechanical properties versus $Er_{2}O_{3}/(AlN + Er_{2}O_{3})$ ratio curve had a maximum; i.e., there was a small composition range at which optimum mechanical properties were realized. The best results were obtained when the ratio ranged from 0.4 to 0.6. The flexural strength and fracture toughness of the SiC ceramics were $550\~650\;MPa$ and $5.5\~6.5$ MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

  • The reason for permanent shrinking of recycled castable refractories from alumino-silicate waste refractories was investigated and the method to control shrinking is suggested in order to increase maximum service termperature. The porosity of castable refractories with waste material as large aggregate decreases after heat treatment because the porosity of waste refractories is greater than the of green material, in which CaO around large aggregate penetrates into aggregate and promotes liquid phase sintering. The shrinking of recycled castable refractories resulted in the decrease in porosity can be controled by addition of green kaolin chamotte as large aggregate. The shrinking of recycled castable refractories caused by the differences in densities of mineral phases before and after heat treatment can be controled by addition of kyanite. The use of green kaolin chamotte and kyanite increases the service temperature of recycled castable refractories up to 1500$^{\circ}C$.

  • YBa2Cu3Ox ceramics superconductors fabricated using solid state reaction usually contain second phases, such as BaCuO2 and CuO. These second phases are located long the grain boundaries and enhance the abnormal growth of YBa2Cu3Ox grains and, consequently, generate the microcracks. These second phaases were reduced by adding Y2BaCuO5 into solid state reacted YBa2Cu3Ox ceramics. Y2BaCuO5 reacts with grain boundary second phases and reduces the grian size of the ceramics. It was observed the critical current density was improved by adding Y2BaCuO5 into solid state reacted YBa2Cu3Ox ceramic superconductor.
