  • This paper reports a preliminary experimental investigation and characterization of an optical fiber-based submersion sensor system for applications in water flooding and leakage. The sensor system comprises a multi-mode fiber spliced with fiber Bragg grating and an intensity-based interrogator. Submersion tests were conducted in water-air and Glycerin-air environments. By the refractive index of the fiber-probe surrounding materials, the reflectance and the detecting power level is determined. When the probe is dipped into the water, the optical output power dramatically decreases from -7.5dBm to -17.5dBm. But, the center of Bragg wavelength is not affected in spite of external material changes. Temporal response characteristics of the sensor system is investigated to verify the real-time reaction. When the probe is immersed into the liquid, there is no transition time.

  • A liquid-air interface sensing system using the flat end surfaces of a fused-silica fiber coupler has been demonstrated. The principle is based on the additional optical loss caused by changing the refractive index of the external material at the boundary of the end face made of a fiber. The immersion characteristics of this system with respect to the different splitting ratios of the couplers were investigated to determine the sensitivity when it responses to water and air. These experimental data are very useful for selecting the coupling ratio of a coupler in order to develop a multiple sensing probe system. In the proposed sensor structure, it can be emphasize that the sensing probe can be appropriately arrayed on the basis of splitting ratio of the coupler. As a result, it is expected that the proposed liquid-air interface sensors can also be applied to monitor flooding that occurs in multiple areas at the same time.

  • <1. New level meter inside the fuel tank> Ultrasound level sensors are widely applied as level meters of liquid tank. Measurement instrument of level between water and fuel is developed. Since the fuel is inflammable, the sensor system doesn't allow to include any electric circuit inside the fuel tank. The optical cable sensor can satisfy this explosive condition. The measurement method with ultrasonic sensor is attached on the tank wall or tank manhole lid. The pressure sensor can't be applied inside the gasoline fuel tank. An ultra-sonic sensor doesn't detect a enough signal reflected from water level deep under gasoline fuel. The pressure sensor is difficult to measure the height o...

  • A selection methodology of liquid levelmeters, especially, level sensors in non-nuclear category, to be installed in nuclear energy facilities is developed using linguistic fuzzy approaches such as fully-linguistic and semi-linguistic methods. Depending on defuzzification techniques, the linguistic fuzzy methodology leads to either linguistic (exactly, fully-linguistic) or cardinal (i.e., semi-linguistic) evaluation. For the linguistic method, for each alternative, fuzzy preference index is converted to linguistic utility value by means of a similarity measure determining the degree of similarity between fuzzy index and linguistic ratings. For the cardinal method, the index is translated to cardinal overall utility value. According to these values, alternatives of interest are linguistically or numerically evaluated and a suitable alternative can be selected. Under given selection criteria, the suitable selections out of some liquid levelmeters for nuclear facilities are dealt with using the linguistic fuzzy methodology proposed. Then, linguistic fuzzy evaluation results are compared with qualitative result available in the literature. It is found that as to a suitable option the linguistic fuzzy selection is in agreement with the qualitative selection. Additionally, the comparative study shows that the fully-linguistic method using adequate scale system facilitates linguistic interpretation regarding evaluation results.

  • For the measurement of liquid level in ship's cargo tank, ballast tank, fuel oil tank and fresh water tank, several types of gauge meter are used such as tubular type, magnetic float type, reflex type transparent type and welding pad type. Among them, magnetic float type gauge meter is environmental friendly device because it is free of power source and maintenance. The main obstacle of the device is relatively large error bound. In this paper, finite element method is used to design and analysis of the magnetic float type gauge meter. The operation of reed switch according to the magnetic field has been successfully described and agreed well with experimental measurement. The optimum geometry with combination of permanent magnet and reed switches are designed to achieve 98 % accuracy of fluid level.

  • Purpose: The objectives of this study were to develop an automated disinfectant dilution system, and an automated data management system for spraying amount for resolving uncertainty problem. Methods: Proper diluting rate was made by a controlled volume pump for liquid disinfectant and a screw conveyer pump for solid disinfectant. The water capacity of disinfecting system of 400 L was controlled by two water level sensors. The water quantity of water tank was controlled by the signals which were produced by the water level sensors. Signals were processed by Labview Programming, and ON/OFF of solenoid valve that was used for controlling water supplying to water tank, was controlled by SSR. The operating time of pumps for disinfectant was controlled quantitatively. A turbine flowmeter was used for development of automated measurement system for spraying amount of disinfectant. In order to save the flowmeter data and to control the spraying system, a multi-function data logger was used, and it was processed and saved in Excel file by a program developed in this study. Results: Labview 2010 was used for programming to control the automated measurement system for spraying amount of disinfectant. Results showed that the relationship between flowmeter value and time had a significant linear relationship such as 0.99 of $R^2$. Generally, 6.74 L/s of diluted disinfectant is sprayed for a vehicle passing through the disinfection system (about 15 seconds). Test results showed that average error between the measured spraying amount and the flowmeter data was 50 mL, and the range of error was 1.3%. Since the amount and time of spraying could be saved in real-time by using the spreadsheet files which could not be modified arbitrarily, it made possible to judge objectively whether the disinfection spraying was performed or not. Test results of spraying liquid and solid disinfectant showed that the errors between the measured discharge rate and the theoretical one were ranged within 3-4% for various dilution rates. Conclusions: The disinfection system developed would be working accurately. The automated spraying data base management system satisfied the purpose of this study. The automated dilution process system developed in this study could discharge liquid and solid disinfectant with accurate dilution rate, relatively.

  • This study focused on the charateristic of magnetic fluids, the viscosity deviation of magnetic fluids due to temperature changes, and fabrication of a 'purely' liquid type microvalve. The viscosity of magnetic fluids decreases sharply during increasing of temperature. The viscosity of magnetic fluids is rated 1,000 cP at the room temperature and 25 cP when the temperature reaches $100^{\circ}C$. Briefly, it is remarkable that the fluid flow can be controlled by the temperature and this characteristic can be adopted to the microfluidics as a microvalve. The fabrication of a liquid type microvalve is more easy than solid state microvalves and which can increase an efficiency of the controlability with respect to the thermo-pneumatic micropump which is studied broadly for many years. When the magnetic fluid used as a sealant for high level sealing, the pressure leakage is less than solid state microvalve. The experimental results show that the pressure drop in microchannel, filled with the magnetic fluid, is significant in the temperature range of $20^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ and this result explains why the use of magnetic fluids is possible as a microvalve searcher uses this characteristics. Well known thermo-pnumatic.

  • Simultaneous measurement technique for temperature and velocity fields near a heated solid body has been constructed. The measurement system consists of a 3-late CCD color camera, a color image grabber, a 1ighting system, a host computer and a software for the whole quantification process. Thermo Chromic Liquid Crystals (TCLC) was used as temperature sensors. A neural network was used to get a calibration curve between the temperature and the color change of the TCLC in order to enhance the dynamic range of temperature measurement. The velocity field measurement was attained by the use of the fray-level images taken for the flow field, and by introducing the cross-correlation technique. The temperature and the velocity fields of the forced and the natural convective flows neat the surface of a cartridge heater were measured simultaneously with the constructed measurement system.

  • Water reservoir is defined as a storage space to hold and supply filtered water and it's significantly important to manage water level in the water reservoir so as to stabilize water supply by controlling water supply depending on demand. Liquid level sensors have been installed in the water reservoir and the pumps in the booster station facilitated management for optimum water level in the water reservoir. But the incident responses including sensor malfunction and communication breakdown actually count on manager's inspection, which involves risk of accidents. To stabilize draining facility management, this study has come up with AI model that predicts changes in the water level in the water reservoir. Going through simulation in the case of missing data in the water level to verify stability in relation to the field application of the prediction model for water level changes in the reservoir, the comparison of actual change value and predicted value allows to test utility of the model.

  • Water levels are measured in various fields such as sewage treatment plants, water treatment plants, rivers, dams, factory storages' tanks. Ultrasonic instruments for water level measurement are expensive and are used for industrial field. Rapid advances in electronics have made it possible to build a wide variety of measurement, monitoring and control functions at low cost. This study was started to make ultrasonic level measurement system at low price. The system was constructed with an Arduino, an ultrasonic sensor and a temperature sensor for use in the experiment. The ultrasonic sensor measures the time from the sensor to the liquid surface. The temperature sensor measures the atmospheric temperature and improves the accuracy of the ultrasonic distance measurement by correcting the sound speed. Arduino controls measurements and calculates the water level. All components of the system are assembled into a device holder. Experiments with this system show that the water level measured by the system is very close to the actual value. This system is also inexpensive and easy to install and maintain, making it suitable for laboratory use.
