A wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is a major gateway for the engineered nano-particles (ENPs) entering the water bodies. However existing studies have reported that many WWTPs exceed the No Observed Effective Concentration (NOEC) for ENPs in the effluent and thus they need to be designed or operated to more effectively control ENPs. Understanding and predicting ENPs behaviors in the unit and \the whole process of a WWTP should be the key first step to develop strategies for controlling ENPs using a WWTP. This study aims to provide a modeling tool for predicting behaviors and removal efficiencies of ENPs in a WWTP associated with process characteristics and major operating conditions. In the developed model, four unit processes for water treatment (primary clarifier, bioreactor, secondary clarifier, and tertiary treatment unit) were considered. Additionally the model simulates the sludge treatment system as a single process that integrates multiple unit processes including thickeners, digesters, and dewatering units. The simulated ENP was nano-sized TiO2, (nano-TiO2) assuming that its behavior in a WWTP is dominated by the attachment with suspendid solids (SS), while dissolution and transformation are insignificant. The attachment mechanism of nano-TiO2 to SS was incorporated into the model equations using the apparent solid-liquid partition coefficient (Kd) under the equilibrium assumption between solid and liquid phase, and a steady state condition of nano-TiO2 was assumed. Furthermore, an MS Excel-based user interface was developed to provide user-friendly environment for the nano-TiO2 removal efficiency calculations. Using the developed model, a preliminary simulation was conducted to examine how the solid retention time (SRT), a major operating variable affects the removal efficiency of nano-TiO2 particles in a WWTP.

Storage tanks of Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) carriers utilized for the purpose of carbon capture and storage (CCS) into subsea strata have to undergo a pre-cooling session before beginning to load cryogenic liquid cargos in order to prevent physical and thermal deterioration of tanks which may result from cryogenic $CO_2$ contacting tank walls directly. In this study we propose dynamic model to calculate the tank inflow of $CO_2$ gas injected for precooling process and its dynamic simulation results under proportional-integral control algorithm. We selected two cases in which each of them had one controlled variable (CV) as either the tank pressure or the tank temperature and discussed the results of that decision-making on the pre-cooling process. As a result we demonstrated that the controlling instability arising from nonlinearity and singularity of the mathematical model could be avoided by choosing tank pressure as CV instead of tank temperature.

This paper focuses on the design of a 12-kW small-scale supercritical CO2 test loop. A theoretical study, stabilization, and optimization of carbon dioxide were carried out with the application of a solar heat source based on solar thermal data in Pohang. The thermodynamic cycle of the test facility is a Rankine cycle (transcritical cycle), which contains liquid, gas, and supercritical CO2. The system is designed to achieve 6.98% efficiency at a maximum pressure of 12 MPa and a maximum temperature of 70℃. In addition, the optimum turbine inlet temperature and pressure were calculated to increase the cycle efficiency, and the application of an internal heat exchanger (IHX) was simulated. It was found that the maximum efficiency increases to 18.75%. The simulation confirmed that the efficiency of the cycle is 6.7% in May and 6.26% in June.

The responsibility of the vehicle holding device (VHD) is to hold the launch vehicle while it is stayed on launch pad and release the holding mechanism to allow a lift-off of launch vehicle at a moment of lift-off. During a release of the holding mechanism, in order to prevent the Ka doing a doing a doing mode which is vertical oscillation of entire liquid propellant and very severe for vehicle structure, gradual release of holding force is required. Also, a release operation of all 4 VHD should be synchronized very precisely. In this study, to comply the "gradual release and synchronized operation requirement", concept of VHD hydraulic system using an accumulator, pyro valve and orifice to control speed of hydraulic cylinder is proposed instead of using complicated hydraulic components. Then through multi-body dynamic analysis and computational hydraulic analysis, a size of orifice to meet a target speed of hydraulic cylinder is calculated. Through this study, simple and reliable VHD hydraulic system complying requirements is designed.

There has been an increased interest in the mitigation of wax deposition because wax, which usually accumulates in subsea oil-production systems, interrupts stable oil production and significantly increases the cost. To guarantee a required oil flow by mitigating wax deposition, we need to obtain a reliable estimation of the wax deposition. In this research, we perform simulations to understand the major mechanisms that lead to wax deposition, namely molecular diffusion, shear stripping reduction, and aging. While the model variables (shear reduction multiplier, wax porosity, wax thermal conductivity, and molecular diffusion multiplier) can be measured experimentally, they have high uncertainty. We perform an analysis of these variables and the amount of water and gas in the multiphase flow to determine these effects on the behavior of wax deposition. Based on the results obtained during this study for a higher wax porosity and molecular diffusion multiplier, we were able to confirm the presence of thicker wax deposits. As the shear reduction multiplier decreased, the thickness of the wax deposits increased. As the amount of water increased, there was also an increase in the amount of wax deposits until 40% water cut and decreased. As the amount of gas increased, the amount of wax deposits increased because of the loss of the light hydrocarbon component in the liquid phase. The results of this study can be utilized to estimate the wax deposition behavior by comparing the experiment (or field) and simulation data.

21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD), most common form of congenial adrenal hyperplasia, is categorized into classical forms, including the salt-wasting (SW) and the simple virilizing (SV) types, and nonclassical (NC) forms based on the severity of the disease. Newborn screening for 21-OHD has been performed in Korea since 2006. $17{\alpha}$-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) is a marker for 21-OHD and is measured using a radioimmunoassay or a fluoroimmunoassay. Premature and low birth weight infants are likely to give false positive 17-OHP findings, therefore, cutoff values for these infants should be determined based on gestational weeks or birth weight. ACTH simulation test is helpful when the 17-OHP shows equivocal increase, and it is gold standard for diagnosis of NC type. Recently, liquid chromatography linked with tandem mass spectrometry was developed for rapid, highly specific, and sensitive analysis of multiple analytes. Molecular analysis of CYP21A2 is useful for confirming diagnosis of mild SV or NC type, predicting prognoses, and genetic counseling. In order to make newborn screening for 21-OHD more efficient, early detection of boy with SW type, early determination of girl with ambiguous genitalia, detection of NC type, and overcoming of false positive in premature and low birth weight infants should be considered. Above all, early treatment should be started when the patient is suspected as having 21- OHD clinically before confirming the diagnosis to prevent adrenal crisis. Here, author reviewed recent articles of guideline and proposed guideline for 21-OHD.

A gap between a $Al_2O_3/Fe$ thermite and lower head vessel is formed in the lower-plenum arrested vessel attack(LAVA) experiment which is the 1st phase study of simulation of naturally arrested vessel attack in vessel(SONATA-IV). The gap measurement using a conventional ultrasonic method would be lack of a reliability due to the structure complexity and the metallurgical grain size change of the lower head HAZ occurred by a thermite $Al_2O_3/Fe$ melt or a $Al_2O_3$ melt at $2300^{\circ}C$. The grain echoes having false signals and lower S/N ratio signals are detected due to a multiple scattering, a mode conversion and an attenuation of a ultrasonic resulted from at the interface of increased grain size zone. In this test, the signals pattern was classified to understand the behavior of the ultrasonic in a multi-layer specimen of solid-liquid-solid of assuming that the thermite and the lower head vessel is immersed. The polarity threshold algorithm of frequency diversity gives us the enhancement about 6dB of the ratio S/N.
The structure and evolution of a thunderstorm outflow in two dimensions with no environmental wind are investigated using a cloud-resolving model with explicit liquid-ice phase microphysical processes (ARPS: Advanced Regional Prediction System). The turbulence structure of the outflow is explicitly resolved with a high-resolution grid size of 50m. The simulated single-cell storm and its associated Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) billows are found to have the lift stages of development maturity, and decay. The secondary pulsation and splitting of convective cells resulted from interactions between cloud dynamics and microphysics are observed. The cooled downdrafts caused by the evaporation of rain and hail in the relatively dry lower atmosphere result in thunderstorm cold-air outflow. The outflow head propagates with almost constant speed. The KH billows formed by the KH instability cause turbulence mixing from the top of the outflow and control the structure of the outflow. Ihe KH billows are initiated at the outflow head, and pow and decay as moving rearward relative to the gust front. The numerical simulation results of the ratio of the horizontal wavelength of the fastest growing perturbation to the critical shear-layer depth and the ratio of the horizontal wavelength of the billow to its maximum amplitude are matched well with the results of other studies.

Recently, an understanding of new sources of liquid hydrocarbons such as bio-ethanol is economically very important. The present dissertation is also designed with purpose of developing the energy-saving process for the separation of bio-ethanol. In order to illustrate the predictability of proposed process for the separation of bio-ethanol, the experimental data from literatures and real plant data are used. Application of the thermodynamics of multicomponent mixtures and phase equilibria to the extractive distillation process with syntheses of heat exchanger network has enabled the development of energy-saving process for different separating agents. Developed process is capable of minimizing the energy usage and the environmental effect. This extractive process is also able to properly describe the effect of impurities, the choice of separating agent. Simulation results of extractive distillation using ethylene glycol show that impurities do not affect to extractive distillation operation and agent, ethylene glycol, was recycled without any loss. It is possible that extraction distillation has various heat network for anhydride ethanol and recovery of ethanol is maximized. Ethylene glycol as separating agent has a high boiling point to eliminate azeotropic point and on the contrary solubility of agent is low to be almost completed recovered. Proposed process is also the energy efficient process configuration in which 99.85mole% anhydride ethanol can be produced with low energy of 1.37198 (kg steam/kg anhydride ethanol).

A model of substrate removal by rotating discs has been developed for a better understanding of the process, and the performance of the system has been evaluated under steady and unsteady state. The model was constructed based upon mass transfer of the substrate from the bulk solution to the biofilm and a simultaneous removal of the substrate by the biomass. The model is composed of a few sets of differential equations representing mass balance within the elements of a liquid film and a biofilm, and in the bulk solution. Substrate removal efficiency of the process is largely dependent on a diffusion coefficient of the substrate within the biofilm and a maximum rate of substrate removal of the biomass. The efficiency is affected to a greater extent when the substrate concentration is low and the maximum substrate removal rate is high. The efficiency increases proportionally with increasing film depth when the biofilm is shallow, however, the rate of increase gradually decreases with an increase of the film depth. As the film reaches a limiting depth, the efficiency remains constant. Unlike the steady state, the effluent quality is affected by the tank volume under dynamic state. Increasing tank volume decreases peak concentration of the effluent under peak loading. Additional tank volume provides a buffer capacitya.gainst a peak loading and the holding tank behaves like an equalization tank.
