Staphylococcus aureus cultures exposed to rotating magnetic field (RMF) were studied in order to analyse the possible induced changes in staphylococcal enterotoxin genes (se) expression. Liquid cultures of S. aureus strains carrying different se were exposed to the RMF of magnetic frequency 50 Hz and magnetic induction 34 mT for 10 h at $37^{\circ}C$. Three time points of bacterial growth cycle were considered for RNA extractions. Gene expression analyses were evaluated using real-time quantitative PCR method. The present study confirmed, that the RMF can stimulate the growth rate of S. aureus cultures in comparison to the unexposed controls, while the stimulation is not strain dependent. The studies have also shown, that the RMF, depending on the exposure time but regardless the bacterial strain, can influence on the expression of various se. In general, except for sea, as a result of bacterial exposure to the RMF through subsequent growth phases, the expression of se decreased, reaching the values below results recorded for unexposed controls. In the case of sea expression remained at a lower level as compared to the control, regardless the time of exposition.

In this study, the effects of HP4060, a pomegranate extract, on Sprague-Dawley (SD) female rats were investigated. SD rats used in the experiment were divided into 3 groups: a control group, 100 mg HP4060/kg rat powder fed group, and 25 mg HP4060/kg rat liquid fed group. After 20 days of administration, the changes of the brain neurotransmitters were measured. The data showed that the concentration of the serotonin and the norepinephrine were increased, whereas that of the epinephrine was decreased in HP4060 administered groups. In addition, the improving effect of HP4060 on depression symptom of menopause women were shown by increased immobility time of the SD rates in a separate experiment. The uterus weight of HP4060 fed groups were also shown to be increased. In order to monitor toxic effect of HP4060, glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT) levels were measured, and the results showed that no significant difference in GOT and GPT levels among experimental groups implying no significant toxic side effects of HP4060. According to these results, it seems clear that HP4060 may improve symptoms of hot flush and depression caused by menopause without significant level of toxic effects.

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) / polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric composite films for nanogenerator devices were fabricated by spray coating method. When the CNT/PVDF mixture solution passes through the spray nozzle with small diameter by the compressed nitrogen gas, electric charges are generated in the liquid by a triboelectric effect. Then randomly distributed ${\beta}$ phase PVDF film could be re-oriented by the electric field resulting from the accumulated electrical charges, and might be resulted in extremely one-directionally aligned ${\beta}$ phase PVDF film without additional electric field for poling. X-ray diffraction patterns were used to investigate crystal structure of the CNT/PVDF composite films. It was confirmed that they revealed extremely large portion of the ${\beta}$ phase PVDF crystalline in the film. Therefore we could obtain the poled CNT/PVDF piezoelectric composite films by the spray coating method without additional poling process. Charge accumulation and resulting electric field generation mechanism by spray coating method were shown in Fig. 1. The capacitance of the CNT/PVDF films increased by adding CNTs into the PVDF matrix, and finally saturated. However, the I-V curves didn't show any saturation effect in the CNT concentration range of 0~4 wt%. Therefore we can control the performance of the devices fabricated from the CNT/PVDF composite film by adjusting the current level resulted from the CNT concentration with the uniform capacitance value.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the in vitro fermentation profiles of different soybean oligosaccharides (SBOs) and their effects on skatole production and cecal microbiota of broilers. Methods: Five SBOs with varying main component contents were fermented using an in vitro batch incubation inoculated with broiler cecal microbiota. Gas production was recorded automatically, skatole, indole and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography, and microbial changes were analyzed using 16S DNA gene sequencing. Results: The addition of SBOs increased (p<0.05) gas production, suggesting bacterial growth-stimulating activities. In addition, the concentrations of indole were significantly (p<0.05) decreased after SBO supplementation, and SBO III, with higher sucrose and stachyose contents, decreased (p<0.05) the skatole level. Our results also revealed that the fermentation of SBOs by cecal microbiota produced (p<0.05) SCFAs, which were dominated by propionic acid, butyrate acid and lactic acid compared to the control. In addition, SBO III increased (p<0.05) the abundance of Firmicutes and Subdoligranulum and decreased that of Bacteroides. Conclusion: These results suggest that SBOs with higher sucrose and stachyose contents are promising prebiotics in modulating gut microbiota and reducing odor emission in broilers.

This study investigated the effects of combined treatments of immersion liquid and high hydrostatic pressure (HHP, 100−400 MPa) on the quality of mackerel. In this study, we measured viable cell counts, pH level, color value, texture properties, and sensory evaluation of mackerel. Viable cell counts of mackerel treated with combined HHP were decreased by 2 log cycles at 300 MPa and 400 MPa compared to the control. The pH values of mackerel treated with HHP at 300 MPa and 400 MPa were higher than that of other samples. Hardness, gumminess, and chewiness decreased when treated with combined HHP and increased with increase in HHP. Lightness and whiteness of mackerel increased, but redness decreased, with increase in HHP. In case of sensory evaluation, texture of mackerel treated with HHP at 300 MPa and 400 MPa showed higher scores than that of other samples. These results suggest that immersion liquid and HHP treatments can increase microbiological safety and improve textural properties of mackerel.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of liquid fertilizer containing humate (LFH) on changes of turfgrass quality and growth by investigating visual quality, chlorophyll content, dry weight of clipping, and nutrient content in leaves tissue. Treatments were designed as follows; control fertilizer (CF), HF-1 ($CF+1.0mL\;m^{-2}\;LFH$), HF-2 ($CF+2.0mL\;m^{-2}\;LFH$), and HF-3 ($CF+4.0mL\;m^{-2}\;LFH$). As compared with CF, soil chemical properties of LFH treatments were not significantly. Visual quality and root dry weight of LFH treatments were higher than that of CF. Chlorophyll content, clipping yield and nitrogen uptake of HF-2 and HF-3 were increased 11.2-11.8%, 15.3-30.0%, 22-42% by application of LFH. The LFH level was positively correlated with visual quality, chlorophyll content, clipping yield or nutrient uptake amount. These results indicated that the application of LFH improved the growth and quality of creeping bentgrass by increasing nutrient uptake and by prompting root growth.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of liquid fertilizer containing humic acid (LFHA) on changes of creeping bentgrass quality and growth. Treatments were designed as follows; control fertilizer (CF), HA-1 ($CF+1ml\;m^{-2}LFHA$ LFHA), HA-2 ($CF+2ml\;m^{-2}LFHA$ LFHA), and HA-3 ($CF+4ml\;m^{-2}LFHA$). As compared with CF, soil chemical properties and chlorophyll content of clipping of LFHA treatments were not significantly different. Visual quality in both of HA-2 and HA-3 treatments was higher than that of CF treatment from September to November, and clipping yield on October 27. Shoot density, root length, and the content of nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium were increased by application of LFHA. The clipping yield was positively correlated with phosphorus content, potassium content or shoot density. Similarly, LFHA level was proportionate to clipping yield of creeping bentgrass, and N, P, K contents in the leaf tissue. These results generally demonstrated that the application of LFHA improved the growth and quality of creeping bentgrass by increase of N content or P in leaf tissue.
In order to prepare the fundamental data for the health promotion by assessing the exposure level of styrene, the author determined the concentration of mandelic acid and phenylglyoxylic acid in urine of 42 workers who were exposed to styrene by high performance liquid chromatography and surveyed 16 symptoms, by questionnaire and also tested neurobehavioral test(digit symbol, benton visual retention) in 2 FRP plants of Kyung Nam area from July to September, 1995. Control was sampled by age sex matching method. The concentration of styrene in air was determined by gas chromatography. The results were as follows; 1. Geometric mean concentration of styrene in air was 17.4ppm, geometric mean concentration of mandelic acid(MA) in urine were 404.3mg/g creatinine for exposure group, 46.4mg/g creatinine for control group, geometric mean concentration of phenylglyoxylic acid(PGA) in urine were 57.5mg/g creatinine for exposure group, 9.5mg/g creatinine for control group. Mean concentration of MA and PGA showed statistically significant difference between exposure group and control group(p<0.01). 2. Number of symptom were 2.9 for exposure group, 3.3 for control group, number of digit symbol were 24.1 for exposure group, 32.5 for control group, number of Benton visual retention test were 6.1 for exposure group, 6.0 for control group, respectively. As result of adjusting the education year, number of Benton visual retention test showed statistically significant difference between exposure group and control group(p<0.05). 3. Excellent correlation were observed between environmental styrene exposure and urinary MA(r=0.80), PGA(r=0.73), and MA+PGA(r=0.81).
We evaluated the effect of mixed liquid fertilizer (MLF) on growth responses of plants and soil chemical properties. To do so, a pot experiment with cherry tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum var. cerasiforme) using loam soil was conducted for 81 days in a temperature-controlled glasshouse, and four N fertilization treatments were laid out in a completely randomized design with three replicates: control (C), chemical fertilizer treatment (CF), and two rates (MLF-0.5 and MLF-1.0) of MLF treatment. Soils were periodically sampled and analyzed for pH, EC, total N, inorganic N and total C, and growth characteristics of cherry tomatoes were measured. During the experimental periods, the pH of MLF soils was higher than that of CF soils. Soil total-N content increased right after CF-application and ultimately decreased to the level of the control (C) soil, while MLF-application slightly increased the level of soil total-N and this level remained unchanged throughout the experiment. The levels of soil inorganic N content increased after application of CF or MLF, but the initial increase disappeared in 56 days after transplanting (DAT). The dry weight of shoots and roots increased in CF or MLF plants, while the number of fruit increased only in MLF plants. Whereas soluble solid contents were higher in MLF plants than in the other (C and CF) plants, the titratable acidity was not different among treatments. However, no consistent effect of N treatments on major elements of the organs of cherry tomatoes was found. The amounts of N taken up by plants were 0.91 g for CF, 0.61 g for MLF-1.0, 0.43 g for MLF-0.5, and 0.25 g for control treatments, resulting in greater N efficiency for CF than for MLF.
