  • Liquid flow in a stirring mixer driven by a six-blade turbine has been investigated experimentally. The flows were quantified by measurements of velocity characteristics. obtained by a Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). for a blade rotational speed of 100r.p.m. and for two blade clearances from the bottom of the tank. The instantaneous flow fields show that the bulk flow consists of small scale vortices very complicately. However, the mean flow results show that the formation of ring vortices above and below the blade. which depend on the clearance.

  • Spray visualization of a vaporizer fuel injection system of a micro turbo jet engine was experimentally studied. The fuel heating by combustion was simulated by the high pressure steam generator and combustor inlet air from the centrifugal compressor was simulated by compressed air stored in the high pressure air tank. Spray visualization was performed with single vaporizer, and then six vaporizers which are same number of micro turbojet engine were used. As a results, the spray characteristics of the vaporizer were understood with pressure difference of the combustor inlet air and the fuel supply pressure. Spray angles with three types of vaporizer configuration were measured. In the results, guide vane configuration has a wider spray angle than the straight tube and smooth curve tube with a swirler, so it is expected that the fuel will be effectively distributed inside the combustor flame tube.

  • In this paper, it is studied the electrostatic discharge In Insulating oil for the purpose of the technical control of the streaming electrification resulted from the interface between an insulating liquid and a solid. The streaming current increases exponentially with flow rate and In region of lower than 50[$^{\circ}C$]but decreases at higher than the same temperature. The phenomena of electrostatic discharge appear at an interface between measuring tank and insulating oil when the seven sheets of gauzes are inserted in electrification apparatus. And those of partial or surface discharge are shown when eight sheets are inserted.

  • The main objective of this work is to investigate the sloshing behavior in a baffled and unbaffled three dimensional annular-sectored water pool (i.e., tank) which is located at dome region of the primary containment. Initially two case studies were performed for validation. In these case studies, the theoretical and experimental results were compared with numerical results and good agreement was found. After the validation of present numerical procedure, an annular-sectored water pool has been taken for numerical investigation. One sector is taken for analysis from the eight sectored water pool. The free surface is captured by Volume of Fluid (VOF) technique and the fluid portion is solved by finite volume method while the structure portions are solved by finite element approach. Baffled and un-baffled cases were compared to show the reduction in wave height under excitation. The complex mechanical interaction between the fluid and pool wall deformation is simulated using a partitioned strong fluid-structure coupling.

  • Experimental research on flow characteristics of open natural circulation system was performed, to figure out the mechanism of the open natural circulation behaviors. The influence factors, such as the heating power, the inlet subcooled and the level of cooling tank on the flow characteristics of the system were examined. It was shown that within the scope of the experimental conditions, there are five flow types: single-phase stable flow, flash and geyser coexisting unstable flow, flash stable flow, flash unstable flow, and flash and boiling coexisting unstable flow. The geyser flow in flash and geyser coexisting unstable flow is different from classic geysers flow. The flow oscillation period and amplitude of the former are more regular, is a newly discovered flow pattern. By drawing the flow instability boundary diagram and sorting out the flow types, it is found that the two-phase unstable flow is mainly characterized by boiling and flash, which determine the behavior of open natural circulation respectively or jointly. Moreover, compared with full liquid level system, non-full liquid level system is more prone to boiling phenomenon, and the range of heat flux density and undercooling degree corresponding to unstable flow is larger.

  • Liquefied natural gas(LNG) is natural gas that has been converted temporarily to liquid form for ease of storage and transport it. Natural gas is the worlds cleanest burning fossil fuel and it has emerged as the environmentally preferred fuel of choice. In Korea, the demand of this has been increased since the first import from the Indonesia in 1986. LNG takes up about 1/600th the volume of natural gas in the gaseous state by cooling it to approximately $-162^{\circ}C(-260^{\circ}F)$. The reduction in volume therefore makes it much more cost efficient to transport and store it. Modern LNG storage tanks are typically the full containment type, which is a double-wall construction with reinforced concrete outer wall and a high-nickel steel inner tank, with extremely efficient insulation between the walls. The insulation will be installed to LNG outer tank for the isolation of cryogenic temperature. The insulation will be installed in the base slab, wall and at the roof. According to the insulation's arrangement, the different aspects of temperature transmission is shown around the outer tank. As the result of the thermal & stress analysis, by the installing cellular glass underneath the perlite concrete, the temperature difference is greatly reduced between the ambient temperature and inside of concrete wall, also reducing section force according to temperature load.

  • The sloshing is very important in a safe transport of the liquid cargo by a ship. With the increasing number of supertanker and LNG carriers, this problem has become increasingly more important. In order to study the magnitude and characteristics of impact pressures due to sloshing, experiments ware performed with a rectangular tank and compared with numerical results. Structural responses of tank wall under impulsive pressures were measured. Structural vibrations induced by the sloshing load were analysed by including hydroelastic erects in terms of added mass and damping. To check the validity of the numerical model, the natural frequencies of plate in air and water were compared with measurements, and a good agreement was found. In the case that a plate vibrates under impulsive loads, the pressure on the flexible plate is larger than that on the rigid plate without hydroelastic effects, which was confirmed experimentally. The frequency of oscillatory pressure as well as accel%pion coincides with the natural frequency of plate in water.

  • A one dimensional analytic model for the prediction of the stratification coefficient of a liquid-based solar heating system is developed. The stratification coefficient, $K_s$, is defined as the ratio of the actual useful energy gain to the energy gain that would be achieved if there were no thermal stratification in the storage tank. Previous studies incorporated only collector-side effects, but in this study both the collector and load-side effects are included for the overall performance evaluation.

  • Cryogenic propellant rockets utilize a natural circulation loop of cryogenic fluid to cool the engine inlet temperature before launch. The geometric information about the circulation system, such as length and diameter of the pipes and the heat input to the system, defines the mass flow rate of the natural circulation loop. We performed experiments to verify the natural circulation mass flow rate and compared the results with the analytical results. The comparison of the mass flow rate between experiments and numerical simulations showed a 12% offset. We also included a prediction of the natural circulation flow rate in the low-gravity section and in the acceleration section in the upper stage of the launch vehicle. The oxygen tank should have 100 kPa(a) of pressure in the acceleration section to maintain a high flow rate for the natural circulation loop. In the low-gravity section, there should be an optimal tank pressure that leads to the maximum natural circulation flow rate.

  • An experimental study was performed to understand the heat transfer and fluid dynamic characteristics of Sub-Cooled Hybrid Condenser (SCHC), which conventional condenser and receiver dryer are integrated into. SCHC also employs a sub-cooled refrigerant passages at the end of the condenser in order to supply perfect liquid refrigerant to the expansion unit. Throughout the present study, it was found that the developed SCHC increases in the degree of sub-cooling by 10~100% compared to conventional condenser. The excessive sub-cooling has improved the cooling performance by 10%, and that leads reduction in evaporator outlet air temperature by $1.5^{\circ}C$. Also found through the study is that the refrigerant pressure drop across SCHC is fairly increased due to insertion of the desiccant cartridge in the receiver tank which is composed of zeolite, filter and supporter plate.
