  • Three types of polymer, a photoalignment material based N- (phenol)maleimide were synthesized and the liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities on the photopolymer layer were studied. A good LC alignment with UV exposure on the PMI5CA(N-(phenol)maleimide with 5-carbon chain cinnamoyl group) can be obtained. However, the LC alignment defects were observed on the PM13CA (N-(phenol)maleimide with 3-carbon chain cinnamoyl group) and PMIF (N-(phenyl)maleimide including fluoro cinnamoyl group). Also, the good LC alignment with UV exposure on the PM15CA surface was observed at until $150^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature. The LC aligning ability on the photopolymer layer based N-(phenol)maleimide depends on the side chain length of photopolymer.

  • A symmetric-viewing inverse-twisted-nematic (ITN) liquid crystal display (LCD) with alternating alignment layers was developed using a stamping-assisted rubbing (SAR) technique. A patterned layer of a fluorinated acrylate polymer was transferred onto the first rubbed vertical-alignment layer prepared on a substrate by stamping. The fluorinated acrylate polymer provided a protective layer covering the first rubbed alignment layer during the second rubbing process, which promoted the vertical alignment of the LC molecules. The LC cell in the ITN geometry with two orthogonally rubbed alignment layers showed symmetric-viewing characteristics with fourfold symmetry. The SAR technique was shown to be a mask-free alignment method of producing multidomains for symmetric-viewing LCDs.

  • From UV irradiation, we achieved homeotropic liquid crystal alignment on blended photo-polymer layer which is composed of polyvinyl-cinnamate (PVCi) and homeotropic polyimide (PI). From vertical alignment (VA) mode, we measured threshold voltages by various PVCi doping concentration. Also, the rise time and fall time of VA cells were measured to verify the best doping concentration. Transmittance curves showed about 70% value between 380 nm and 780 nm wavelength which mean visible region.

  • We have investigated electric field effect on the formation of phase separated composite organic film structure which is utilized by anisotropic phase separation from LC and prepolymer mixtures. Application of bias field resulted in a significant change in liquid crystal alignment between glass substrate and polymer layer. The liquid crystal molecules segregated into the inter-electrodes and formed twisted structure which is the result of imprinting of LC alignment by the bias field on polymer layers during polymerization process.

  • The orientational and dynamic behavior of liquid crystal molecules on the alignment layer surfaces of liquid crystal display (LCD) devices is crucial to their performance, but there are only a few methods of experimentally elucidating the interactions between the liquid crystals and the alignment layers. Inspired by the natural and technical similarities between membrane proteins in lipid bilayers and liquid crystals in LCDs, we employed solid-state NMR methodologies originally developed for the study of membrane proteins in lipid bilayers for the in-situ analysis of liquid crystal display panels. • Orientational alignment patterns proved that they are very useful for realizing diverse properties of liquid crystals. Here we tried to produce the patterns combining interfered laser light and double irradiations. A photo-isomerizable polymer doped with azo dye, which induce uniform liquid crystal alignment to the uniform laser irradiation, was used as the alignment layer. Double irradiations into two orthogonal directions brought the orientation patterns similar to the checkerboard. It indicates the possibility of bistability on those patterns.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities by the UV alignment method on a diamond like carbon (DLC) thin film surface A good LC alignment by UV exposure on the DLC thin film surface at 200${\AA}$ of layer thickness was achieved. Also, a good LC alignment by the UV alignment method on the DLC thin film surface was observed at annealing temperature of 180$^{\circ}C$. However, the alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of 200$^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the UV alignment method o the DLC thin film surface can be achieved.

  • Liquid crystal alignments on a rubbed polyimide layer were investigated by using optical transmission method. Using this technique, we also studied the pretilt angle of the polymer molecules near the surface of a side-chain polymer layer as a function of the rubbing strength. In particular, we obtained the optical characteristics of liquid crystal orientations and pretilt angles for LC cell photo-aligned by UV as well after rubbing alignment. High pretilt angle of 3.84 degree was obtained on the weekly rubbed polymide layer duribg UV irradation time of 60min.

  • We demonstrated the capillary force lithography (CFL) method for controlling the azimuthal anchoring energy of a liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer. When a thermoplastic polymer film is heated to over the glass transition temperature, the melted polymer is filled into the mold structure by the capillary action and the aspect ratio of the pattern is determined by the dewetting time of the CFL process. Here, the proposed method showed that the azimuthal anchoring energy of the LC alignment layer could be simply controlled by the surface relief patterns which were determined by the dewetting times during the CFL patterning.
