This study investigates the simultanceous heat and mass transfer between a falling desiccant film and air in cross flow at the interface. The application of this work is the optimization of falling film evaporators for use in potential hybrid air conditioning systems. The specific geometry considered is liquid TEG films falling along the vertical cooled surfaces of a channel with air in cross flow. The equations to describe the coupled heat and mass transfer between a falling desiccant film and air in cross flow for a falling film evaporator have been presented and solved numerically. The effects of important design and operating variables on the evaporator performance predicted by the parametric numerical analysis and suggestions for performance improvements of the evaporator are presented.

In this paper, numerical investigations for tank sloshing, based on commercial CFD package FLUENT, are performed to study effects of boundary layer grid, liquid viscosity and compressible air on sloshing pressure, wave height and rising time of impact pressure. Also, sloshing experiments for liquids of different viscosity are carried out to validate the numerical results. Through comparison of numerical and experimental results, a computational model including boundary layer grid can predict the sloshing pressure more accurately. Energy dissipation due to viscous friction leads to reduction of sloshing pressure and wave elevation. Sloshing pressure is also reduced because of cushion effect of compressible air. Due to high viscosity damping effect and compressible air effect, the rising time of impact pressure becomes longer. It is also found that liquid viscosity and compressible air influence distribution of dynamic pressure along the vertical tank wall.
In the present study, capability of improving the liquid atomization of a high-speed liquid jet by using wall impingement is explored, and its application to a jet engine atomize. is demonstrated. Water is injected from a thin nozzle. The liquid jet impinges on a wall positioned close to the nozzle exit, forming a liquid film. The liquid film velocity and the SMD were measured with PDA and LDSA, respectively. It was shown that the SMD of the droplets was determined by the liquid film velocity and impingement angle, regardless of the injection pressure or impingement wall diameter. When the liquid film velocity was smaller than 300m/s, a smaller SMD was obtained, compared with a simple free jet. This wall impingement technique was applied to a conventional air-blasting nozzle for jet engines. A real-size air-blasting burner was installed in a test rig in which three thin holes were made to accommodate liquid injection toward the intermediate ring, as an impingement wall. The air velocity was varied from 41 to 92m/s, and the liquid injection pressure was varied from 0.5 to 7.5 MPa. Combining wall impinging pressure atomization with gas-blasting produces remarkable improvement in atomization, which is contributed by the droplets produced in the pressure atomization mode. Comparison with the previous formulation for conventional gas-blasting atomization is also made, and the effectiveness of utilizing pressure atomization with wall impingement is shown.
In the present study, the gas injection system based on air-water model was designed to investigate the flow characteristics of liquid phase. A PIV system was applied to analyze the flow pattern in a ladle which gas stated to rise upward from the bottom. Gas flow is one of most important factors which could feature a flow pattern in a gas injection system. As the gas injected into the liquid, the kinetic energy of bubble transfer to liquid phase and a strong circulation flow develops in the liquid phase. Such a flow in the liquid develops vortex and improve the mixing process. Due to the centrifugal force, circulation flow was well developed near both wall sides and upper region respectively. Increasing gas flow was helpful to remove dead zone but, weak flow zone still exists in spite of the increasement of gas flow rate.
Wall thinning of pipeline in power plants occurs mainly by flow acceleration corrosion (FAC), cavitation erosion (C/E), liquid droplet impingement erosion (LDIE). Wall thinning by FAC and C/E has been well investigated; however, LDIE in plant industries has rarely been studied due to the experimental difficulty of setting up a long injection of highly-pressurized air. In this study, we designed a long-term experimental system for LDIE and investigate the behavior of LDIE for three kinds of materials (A106B, SS400, A6061). The main control parameter was the air-water ratio (${\alpha}$), which was defined as the volumetric ratio of water to air (0.79, 1.00, 1.72). In order to clearly understand LDIE, the spraying velocity (${\nu}$) of liquid droplets was controled larger then 160 m/s and the experiments were performed for 15 days. Therefore, this research focuses relation between erosion rate and air-water ratio on the various pipe-flow materials. NPP(nuclear power plant)'s LDIE prediction theory and management technique were drawn from the obtained data.
This paper deals with the experimental study on the behavior of fuel (methanol) in intake manifold by using the basic apparatus which is manufactured the visible straight tube type model. In this study, the new device for liquid film thickness measurement and vaporization rate measurement are introduced to investigate the variation of liquid film thickness along the intake manifold and to observe the effect of vaporization of injected fuel. the results are summarized as follows: 1) The vaporization rate increases in proportion to decreasing of throttle valve angle and growing air fuel ratio. 2) The liquid film thickness along the intake manifold is mostly independent for the throttle valve angle in low air velocity and then affected in high air velocity, but the distribution of the liquid film thickness on circumferential position almost constant in the region of 300mm down stream from carburetor. 3) The mean liquid film thickness is 0.04 - 0.18mm in case of methanol in the region of air velocity Va = 12m/s - 55m/s and decreases with decreasing the throttle valve angle.
An air source heat pump using liquid injection technique, which can be applied for very low temperature climate, has been simulated to examine the design options. Comparison between the simulation and experiment has been carried out to validate the simulation method. Effects of various design parameters such as liquid injection rate and injection pressure are Investigated to optimize the performance of the heat pump. Finally, optimal liquid infection rate and injection pressure to maintain sufficient heating capacity and moderate discharge refrigerant temperature are suggested when the heat pump was operated at very low outdoor temperature.
A wall fuel-film flow model is developed to predict the effect of a wall-fuel-film on air-fuel ratio in an SI engine in transient conditions. Fuel redistribution in the intake port resulting from charge backflow and a simple liquid fuel behavior in the cylinder are included in this model. Liquid fuel film flow is calculated of every crank angle degree using the instantaneous air flow rate. The model is validated by comparing the calculated results and corresponding engine experiment results of a commercial 4 cylinder DOHC engine. The predicted results match well with the experimental results. To maintain the constant air-fuel ratio during transient operation. the fuel injection rate control can be obtained from the simulation result.
The results of a simulation study of variable liquid column oscillations in U-tanks with a novel control scheme are presented. The configuration under investigation is analogous to that of the tuned liquid-column damper used to suppress oscillatory motion in large structures like tall buildings and cargo ships. However, by virtue of an adequate controller, the response of amplitude of the U-tanks becomes larger in a desired frequency range. The motion of wave energy conversion system equipped with a variable liquid column oscillator is described by a series of nonlinear differential equations. The equations describe the motion of body under ocean wave excitation, and the motion of liquid with an air-spring effect caused by the compression and expansion of air in vertical liquid columns and air chambers. It is shown that the effect of the air-spring has a vital role to maintain the natural frequency of oscillation in the system to synchronize with the frequency of the ocean wave, thus the system provides the most effective mode for energy extraction from the ocean.
