  • The analysis and experimental results for the bellows of gasgenerator liquid oxygen shut-off valve are presented. The analyses are performed using EJMA (Expansion Joint Manufacturing Association) standard and the commercial FE (finite element) analysis program, Abaqus v6.9, at room and cryogenic temperatures. The results include the spring rate, the stress and the fatigue life of the bellows. The effects of the contact and material plasticity on the FE analysis results are also analyzed.

  • This study aims to develop the performance analysis program on the staged combustion cycle of the liquid rocket engine using liquid oxygen(LOx) as oxidizer, liquid hydrogen(LH2) and RP-1 as fuel. The developed analysis program can obtain the propellant mass flow rate, the specific impulse, and representative design values of engine components for the required thrust satisfying pressure, mass flow, and energy balance conditions. The analysis results show that the the specific impulses (Isp) compared to those of the real engines have been less than 1%. With additional constraints, the program will be improved for the system optimization.

  • The procedure of design and manufacture of sub-scale combustor using bipropellant swirl injector with external mixing for a liquid rocket engine are described. The results of cold flow test, ignition test and combustion test of the sub-scale combustor are also given in this paper. The sub-scale combustor uses liquid oxygen(LOx) and kerosene as propellants and has a injector head, an ablative material combustor wall and a water cooled nozzle. The injector head has LOx manifold, fuel manifold, fire face plate, one center swirl injector and 18 main swirl injectors. The cold flow, ignition and combustion tests were successfully performed without damage of combustor. Results of hot firing tests show that combustion efficiency meets the target of design and operations of start and stop cyclogram are stable and high frequency combustion instability does not occur.

  • Propellant pressurization system in liquid rocket propulsion system plays a role in supplying pressurant gas at a controlled pressure into the ullage space of propellant tanks. The most important design parameter for such propellant pressurization system is the temperature of pressurant gas fed from pressurant tank, which is placed inside of cryogenic propellant tank. Such pressurant is gaseous state, of which density is very sensitive to the temperature of pressurant. Previous investigation dealt with thermal correlation of pressurant and external fluid at room temperature. This study investigates the temperature variation of cryogenic pressurant (GHe) at the time when the pressurant is coming out of pressurant tank, which is submerged in a liquid oxygen, experimentally as well as numerically.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of film cooling in the lab-scale liquid rocket engine using liquid oxygen(LOx) and Jet A-1(Jet engine fuel) as propellants. Film coolants(Jet A-1 and water) was injected through the film cooling injector. The outside wall temperature of the combustor and film cooled length were determined for chamber pressure, mixture ratio, and the different geometries(injection angle) with the percent film coolant flow rate. The loss of characteristic velocity was determined for the case of film cooling with water and Jet A-1. As chamber pressure increased, the outside wall temperature increased in the nozzle but unchanged over the 9 percent film coolant flow rate for the combustion chamber used in this study. Characteristic velocity wasn't affected with the mixture ratio over the 9 percent film coolant flow rate.

  • The combustion test results of the sub-scale combustor having dual swirl injector with internal mixing for a liquid rocket engine are described. The sub-scale combustor uses liquid oxygen(LOx) and kerosene as propellants and has an injector head, an ablative material combustor wall and a water cooled nozzle. The injector head has LOx manifold, fuel manifold, fire face plate, one center swirl injector and 18 main swirl injectors of internal mixing. The combustion tests were successfully performed at design and off-design points without any damages on the injectors. Combustion characteristics velocity of 1756m/s was measured at design point. High frequency combustion instability was not observed but low frequency pulsations occurred at off-design conditions.

  • For rockets using cryogenic liquid hydrogen or liquid oxygen, chilling is required to avoid cavitation and surge problems. Chilling is categorized by the initial chilling/filling stage and the low-temperature maintenance stage. In addition, to improve satellite insertion capability, a multi-ignition capability is required and accordingly chilling to prepare for the next ignition during low-gravity coasting is also required. This paper describes the overall aspects of filling and low temperature maintain marinating for the booster and the upper stage engine including chilling for multi-ignition.

  • It is critical to set up the starting sequence of liquid rocket engines because not carefully arranged process can lead the engine damages. Thus, many efforts were made to prevent the hard start at the ignition. Hypergolic fuels are frequently used to ignite LRE and TEAL, one of the hypergolic fuel is also used for kerosene-LOx LRE ignition. However, since we are still lack of experiences igniting oxygen rich preburners of the staged combustion cycle engines, it would be helpful to estimate the TEAL ignition phenomena before the actual tests.

  • An oxygen rich preburner was tested and the responses from the pressure sensors were studied with FFT analysis. Since the limited capability of the static sensor, less than 250 Hz frequency domain was investigated and compared to the results of the dynamic sensors. As a result, 60 Hz harmonics were presented dominant in the combustion pressure and oxygen inlet pressure. While similar harmonics were shown with the dynamic sensor, it indicated that harmonics less than 60 Hz were very minor and the high frequency is more important.
