The scattering of plane ultrasonic waves by the nuclear fuel pin of liquid metal reactor in sodium is studied. According to the internal composition in the cladding tube, the fuel pin has three cross sections, i.e. helium gas plenum, sodium-filled section, and fuel insertion section. The scattering spectra for each section of the fuel pin are different. The circumnavigating ultrasonic waves of each section are analyzed by the resonance scattering method. The whispering gallery wave modes are generated in the sodium-filled plenum section and the fuel rod insertion section with a sodium-gap. The circumferential wave modes are propagated in the cladding tube of the helium gas plenum section. The annular gap between the cladding tube and metal uranium pellet rod affects the scattering spectra. The different propagation characteristics can be utilized for the nondestructive method of detecting the unbonded area and measuring the level of the sodium-filled section of the fuel pin.
This paper present the characteristics of the internal induced voltage and arc phenomena in liquid helium at the energy transfer from a superconducting magnet to a load resistor. Especially generation mechanism of the oscillated wave from of the coil terminal voltage is analyzed by considering circuit constant of the superconducting magnet, load condition and arc resistance of the mechanical opening switch. The wavefront and peak portion of the voltage are strongly influenced by arc discharge triggered by the switch separation in liquid helium. Abrupt arc extinction leads to voltage oscillation with an enormous peak. It is suggested that the superconducting magnet should be designed to ensure the internal surge when arc is possibly formed by switch opening or coil short circuit between turns or layers. Finally, a suppression method of the oscillating surge is proposed based on the load condition.
The analysis of propellant feeding sub-system is performed using a commercial code SINDA/FLUINT, the comprehensive finite-difference, one-dimensional, lumped parameter tool. With the code, cryogenic helium supply system, liquid oxygen supply system, helium injection cooling system are evaluated. The code gave satisfactory estimation scheme for propulsion system characterized by cryogenic temperature and high pressure, two phase flow. This paper focuses on presenting calculation scheme of propulsion sub-system using one-dimensional code like SINDA/FLUINT.

As the measures of nuclear power plant utilities and manufacturers to reduce the defects of tube expansion region during manufacturing steam generators, many types of NDEs(Non-Destructive Examinations) are conducted to inspect the expansion region. The expansion region of tube is subject to degrade because of stress concentration induced by tube expansion, sludge pile and high temperature. So the inspections for tube expansion region have been reinforced. Liquid penetrant test, helium leak test, Bobbin profile test and hydraulic test are performed to confirm the integrity of tube expanded by hydraulic expansion method. Liquid penetrant test and helium leak test are used to inspect seal weld region on tubesheet end part. Bobbin Profile test is used to inspect fully the expanded region of steam generator tube. Hydraulic test finally verifies the integrity of seal weld region on tubesheet end part.

This paper presents experimental and characteristic analysis of hgh-$T_c$ eater-triggered witch using coated conductor (CC) in liquid and gas helium. The high temperature superconducting insert coil which can be installed in a low temperature superconducting (LTS) magnet has been proposed and researched to generate higher magnetic field for MR. Since CC could be an attractive option for HTS insert, it is important to research he characteristics of heater-triggered switch employing CC. We performed the heater test and constructed simulation model using finite element method (FEM.) We performed a protection test and observed normal zone propagation (NZP) signals to evaluate the witch with protection of magnet.
Understanding the fundamental characteristics of supersonic hydrogen jets is important for the optimization of combustion in hydrogen engines. Previous studies have used helium as a surrogate gas to characterize the hydrogen jet characteristics due to potential explosion risks of hydrogen. It was based on the similarity of hydrogen and helium jet structures in supersonic conditions that has been confirmed using hole-type injectors and large-cone-angle pintle-type injectors. However, the validity of using helium as a surrogate gas has not been examined for recent small-cone-angle pintle-type injectors applied to direct-injection hydrogen engines, which form a supersonic hollow cone near the nozzle and experience the jet collapse downstream. Differences in the physical properties of hydrogen and helium could alter the jet development characteristics that need to be investigated and understood. This study compares supersonic jet structures of hydrogen and helium injected by a small-cone-angle (50°) pintle-type hydrogen injector and discusses their differences and related mechanisms. Jet penetration length and dispersion angle are measured using the Schlieren imaging method under engine-like injection conditions. As a result, the penetration length of hydrogen and helium jets showed a slight difference of less than 5%, and the dispersion angle showed a maximum of 10% difference according to the injection condition.
Since superconducting wires have no resistance, electromagnets based on the superconducting wires produce no resistive heating with DC current as long as the current does not exceed the critical current of the wire. However, unlike resistive wires, superconducting wires exhibit AC heat loss. Embedding fine superconducting filaments inside copper matrix can reduce this AC loss to an acceptable level and opens the way to AC-capable superconducting coils. Here, we introduce an easy and accurate method to measure AC heat loss from sample superconducting coils by measuring changes in the rate of gas helium outflow from the liquid helium dewar in which the sample coil is placed. This method provides accurate information on total heat loss of a superconducting coil without any size limit, as long as the coil can fit inside the liquid helium dewar. With this method, we have evaluated AC heat loss of two superconducting solenoids, a 180-turn solid NbTi wire with 0.127 mm diameter (NbTi coil) and a 100-turn filamented wire with 1.4 mm diameter where 7 NbTi filaments were embedded in a copper matrix with copper to NbTi ratio of 6.7:1 (NbTi-Cu coil). Both coils were wound on 15 mm-diameter G-10 epoxy tubes. The AC heat losses of the NbTi and NbTi-Cu coils were evaluated as $53{\pm}4.7\;{\mu}W/A^2Hzcm^3$ and $0.67{\pm}0.16\;{\mu}W/A^2Hzcm^3$, respectively.
KSTAR in-vessel cryo-pump has been installed in the vacuum vessel top and bottom side with up-down symmetry for the better plasma density control in the D-shape H-mode. The cryogenic helium lines of the in-vessel cryo-pump are located at the vertical positions from the vacuum vessel torus center 2,000 mm. The inductive electrical potential has been optimized to reduce risk of electrical breakdown during plasma disruption. In-vessel cryo-pump consists of three parts of coaxial circular shape components; cryo-panel, thermal shield and particle shield. The cryo-panel is cooled down to below 4.5 K. The cryo-panel and thermal shields were made by Inconel 625 tube for higher mechanical strength. The thermal shields and their cooling tubes were annealed in air environment to improve the thermal radiation emissivity on the surface. Surface of cryo-panel was electro-polished to minimize the thermal radiation heat load. The in-vessel cryo-pump was pre-assembled on a test bed in 180 degree segment base. The leak test was carried out after the thermal shock between room temperature to $LN_2$ one before installing them into vacuum vessel. Two segments were welded together in the vacuum vessel and final leak test was performed after the thermal shock. Commissioning of the in-vessel cryo-pump was carried out using a temporary liquid helium supply system.

An experimental investigation was carried out to study the performance of a bubble pump for the diffusion absorption refrigerating system. Ammonia was used as the refrigerant and the helium was charged in order to balance the pressure between the low and high pressure side. As experimental variables, the concentration of ammonia charged into system, heat input, and the pressure of helium were selected. Experimental results show that the generation rate of ammonia vapor and the circulation rate of diluted ammonia solution were increased as the heat input increases, but the ratio of the solution to vapor flow rate was decreased. The generation rate of refrigerant vapor and the circulation rate of diluted ammonia solution increased as the system pressure decreased. Finally under the condition of 25 bars, the concentration of rich ammonia solution was not affected by the generation rate of ammonia vapor and the circulation of diluted ammonia solution.
The paper gives the results of the experiments with a model two-section REBCO solenoid cooled by either gaseous helium (GHe) or sub-cooled/solid nitrogen (SN2) in (50-77) K temperature range. The major cooling source was a single-stage cryocooler Sumitomo CH-110 with the cooling power of 175 W and 130 W at 77 K and 50 K respectively. The coil itself was not directly conduction cooled. We compare the time taken by both coolants to obtain the temperature of the magnet of about 50 K and the homogeneity of the temperature distribution within the cryostat. Test results for the coil operation in solid nitrogen together with the comparison of its critical properties in SN2 and GHe are also presented.
