Liquid crystal alignments on a rubbed polyimide layer were investigated by using optical transmission method. Using this technique, we also studied the pretilt angle of the polymer molecules near the surface of a side-chain polymer layer as a function of the rubbing strength. In particular, we obtained the optical characteristics of liquid crystal orientations and pretilt angles for LC cell photo-aligned by UV as well after rubbing alignment. High pretilt angle of 3.84 degree was obtained on the weekly rubbed polymide layer during UV irradation time of 60min.

The fringe electric field driven transflective liquid crystal display with dual orientation has a problem that the voltage-dependent transmittance and reflectance curves do not match each other, requiring a dual driving circuit to achieve a high electro-optic performance. Optimizations of the electrode structure in the array substrate and rubbing direction solve this problem so that the transflective display with a single gap and a single gamma curve for reflective and transmissive region is possible.

We have fabricated twisted nematic (TN) cell doped by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The CNTs with a minute amount of doping do not perturb the liquid crystal orientation in the off- and on-state. The hysteresis studies of voltage-dependent transmittance and capacitance under ac and dc electric field show that the amount of residual dc, which is related to image sticking problem in liquid crystal displays, is greatly reduced due to ion trapping by CNTs.

We have studied the liquid crystal alignment properties for various alignment methods on the homogeneous polyimide surface. Suitable liquid crystal alignment for one-side alignment cell on the polyimide surface by all alignment method was observed. Highly pre-tilt angle of the NLC for both-side rubbing cell was measured. But, low pre-tilt angle of the NLC for one-side ion beam and UV irradiation cell was observed. We consider that the pre-tilt angle of NLC for one-side ion beam and UV irradiation on the PI surface is lower than that of the PI surface with rubbing. Also, the suitable transmittance-voltage curves for the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the PI surface with one-side UV irradiation were measured. Also, good response time characteristics of the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the polyimide surface with one-side UV irradiation can be measured.
We studied the orientation behavior and thermal stability of polyimide (PI) molecules under irradiation of polarized UV (PUV) using polarized fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. In the case of PUV-exposed PI films, the remaining PI molecules after photo-degradation showed molecular orientation perpendicular to the irradiated PUV polarization direction predominantly, due to the preferential degradation of PI molecules parallel to the irradiated PUV Polarization direction. On the other hand, the rubbing of PI films induced reorientation of the PI molecules parallel to the rubbing direction. We also investigated the thermal stability of the alignment layers furled by rubbing and PUV irradiation on the PI films using Polarized FTIR. The thermal stability of the PUV irradiated PI alignment layer is lower than that of the rubbed PI layer due to the fragmentation reaction of the PI by PUV.

Effect of multi-stacked layer (MSL), 0.1 mol (M) and 0.3 mol (M) hafnium oxide ($HfO_2$) alignment layers were fabricated via a solution-process for LCs orientation. The solutions were spin-coated and annealed in a furnace. MSL consists of three sub-layers using 0.1 M solution, mono-layer (ML) is composed of 0.3 M $HfO_2$ solution. Then ion-beam irradiation was treated with 1.8 keV for 2 min. $HfO_2$-based LC cells were investigated through photographs, pre-tilt angle using crystal rotation method, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement, and surface roughness using atomic force microscopy(AFM) for their characteristic research. Good LC orientation characteristics were observed on MSL $HfO_2$ surface. The LC alignment mechanism on MSL $HfO_2$ and ML $HfO_2$ surfaces was attributed to van der Waals (VDW) interaction between the LC molecular and substrate surface.
Liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) fibers have been widely applied in various fields, such as soft robots and biomimetic actuators, in a one-dimensional form. LCEs possess the characteristics of both fluidity and solid order, as well as the elasticity of rubber, and exhibit stimulus-response based on these properties. In particular, by programming the responsiveness to various stimuli such as heat, light, electric fields, and magnetic fields in terms of shape-changing, various movements such as lifting, twisting, and rotating can be realized with high degrees of freedom. Therefore, LCE fibers have the potential for application in various fields such as artificial muscles, soft robots, wearable technologies, and sensing technologies. The research on liquid crystal elastomer fibers is evaluated to have high applicability in various fields in the Fourth Industrial Revolution as a smart material that can include various functionalities beyond simple fibers. In this review, we introduce the structure and basic characteristics of liquid crystal elastomer fibers, the latest research trends on orientation-based fabrication methods, and various applications such as artificial muscles, smart fabrics, and soft robots.

A (disk-like liquid crystal (DLC) monomer/liquid crystals(LCs)/chiral dopant/dichroic dye) composite was irradiated with ultraviolet (UV) light. The (DLC network/LCs/chiral dopant/dichroic dye) was formed in the homeotropically oriented smectic A(SA) phase by the surface orientation treatment and the electric field. A focal-conic texture exhibiting strong light scattering appeared in the heat-induced chiral nematic phase(N${\ast}$) of the composite upon heating. Thermo-recording in the composite system has been realized by using a He-Ne laser. The laser irradiation was induced the phase transitions from SA phase to chiral nematic(N${\ast}$) phase in the composite system.
The bonding phenomena of Ni base single crystal superalloy. CMSX-4 during transient liquid phase(TLP) bonding was investigated using MBF-80 insert metal. Bonding of CMSX-4 was carried out at 1,373∼1,548K for 0∼19.6ks in vacuum. The (001) orientation of each test specimen was aligned perpendicular to the bonding interface. The dissolution width of base metal was increased when the bonding temperature and holding time were increased. The eutectic width diminished linearly with the square root of holding time during isothermal solidification process. Borides were formed in the bonded layer during TLP bonding operation. The solid phase grew epitaxially into the liquid phase from substrates and single crystallization could be readily achieved during the isothermal solidification.

The X-ray detector by liquid crystal with front light was proposed and verified by a X-ray image. The proposed detector utilizes the visible light instead of the electric signal by transistor. Therefore, it shows low noise and can be fabricated at low cost. The liquid crystal detector uses the orientation change of the liquid crystal molecule by conductivity change of the photoconductive layer. We can get the X-ray image from the transmitted light through the liquid crystal. The X-ray dose was calibrated from the measured transmittance of the visible light after comparison to the reference transmittance curve of the liquid crystal. The amorphous Se was used for photo con ducting layer and parylene was used for the liquid crystal alignment instead of the conventional alignment layer which needs high-temperature process over 200℃. The proposed X-ray detector can decrease the X-ray dose by high sensitivity which was verified by simulation. After the fabrication of the X-ray detector, the X-ray image was obtained as a function of the bias voltage to the liquid crystal. 10 lines/mm resolution was obtained from the line pattern and we will apply it to the 17inch diagonal liquid crystal X-ray detector with 3π retardation.
