  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the difference of muscular activities of the tongue and lip muscles between anterior open-bite and normal occlusion during various function. Thirty eight subjects of 12.1-39.6 years were employed in this study : Eighteen subjects were anterior open-bites and tweenty subjects were normal occlusions. During rest position, maximum effort of lip sealing, command swallow of saliva and sucking & swallowing of juice, the electromyographic datas of the genioglossus, superior longitudinal muscle of tongue, upper and lower orbicularis oris were recorded and integrated with Medelec MS 25 electromyographic machine. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken on all subjects for the analysis of tongue posture and size. All data were recored and statistically processed. The findings of this study can be summerized as follows : 1. During the rest position, muscular activity of tongue was higher than that of lip muscle in open-bite, but no difference in normal occlusion group. 2. During the swallowing of juice, the activity of orbicularis oris was higher than that of genioglossus in open-bite. But the normal occusion was showed higher activity of tongue during the swallowing of juice. 3. The open-bite, compared to the normal occlusion, had higher value of tongue muscle activity during the rest position. 4. Compared to normal occlusion group, the open-bite had higher value of lip muscle activity during the sucking and swallowing of juice. 5. During the command swallow of saliva, the normal occlusion was showed harmonious swallowing pattern, but the open-bite showed much variation and disharmony in muscular contraction sequence, tended to absent of lip muscle activity. 6. At the lateral cephalometric radiographs, compared to the normal occlusion, the open-bite was showed lower tongue posture. But no difference was found in intermaxillary space. It is suggested that the open-bite, compared to the normal occlusion, had higher muscular activity of tongue during the rest position and various functions, showed lower tongue posture on the lateral cephalogram. In the development of anterior open-bite malocclusion, these factors may be an etiologic factor.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among the activity of the craniofacial muscle and craniofacial form and occlusal state. In this study, subjects were consisted of 23 male adults with skeletal Class III malocclusion and 30 male adults with normal occlusion. The measurements in oral exam, lateral ceghalogram, and E.M.G. recordings of anterior temporal, masseter, and upper lip muscles at rest position, clenching in centric occlusion, chewing of gum, swallowing of juice, were analyzed with SPSS system. The results were as follows: 1. At rest position upper lip muscle activity of skeletal Class III group was significantly higher than that of normal group. 2. Both clenching and chewing masseter and temporal muscle activity of normal group were significantly higher than that of skeletal Class III group. 3. During swallowing of juice, upper lip muscle activity of skeletal Class III group were significantly higher than that of normal group. 4. The activities of masseter and anterior temporal muscle during clenching and chewing were significantly correlated with hypodivergent facial form and number of occluded teeth. 5. The activity of upper lip during swallowing had positive correlation with mandibular prognathism.

  • The primary objective of this study was to define the differences that exist. between different sexes on the dentoskeletal framework and the soft tissue profile around the mouth. For the purpose of this study, cephalometric radiographs were obtained from the centric occlusion with closed lip position, through the research on each 42 males and females aged from 17 to 22 years with normal occlusion and acceptable facial appearence. The results were as follows: 1. Maxillary to mandibular relationships. Among the angles formed by the long axis of the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth, the maxillary and mandibular anterior alveolar bone, and the lower and upper lips (Fig.2), only the angle formed by the lips was more acute in males than in females. The males have a more rounded profile, and the females have a flatter profile in the lower third of the face. The differences is statistically significant for the angle formed by the lips. The fact that the lips have a difference greater than that of teeth or the alveolar bone indicates that the lip position is not entirely due to tooth and bony support. Possibly the thickness of the lips has an influence. 2. Occlusal plane. The occlusal plane was related to the anterior tooth inclination, anterior alveolar bone profile, and the lip contour, both maxillary and mandibular (Fig.3). Only the angle related to lower lip was statistically significant. The females again had the more obtuse angle, indicating a flatter profile than that of the males. 3.Skeletal planes. The angles formed by the anterior maxillary lips, teeth, and alveolar bone with the Frankfort plane and the angles of the mandibular lips, teeth, and, alveolar bone and the mandibular plane were investigated (Fig.4). Results were similar to those from maxillary to mandibular relationships. The results were statistically significant for the upper lip and the lower lip, only. 4. Esthetics. The facial line and the mandibular plane were compared with the esthetic line. These angles were different for the different sexes, but only the latter was statistically significant. This difference may be due to the profile contour of the nose.

  • This work was undertaken to evaluate the integumental response in lower face to hard tissue changes, and to grope the prediction equation for expected integumental profile changes. Cephalometric headplates of 25 persons consisted of 8 Angle's class 1 maxillary protrusive and 17 Angle's class II division 1 patients whose mean age was 15.2 years were traced, diagramatized, and statistically analyzed. The results were as follows; 1. Upper incisor and lips were retracted and convexity of integumental profile decreased concurrently with decrease of hard tissue procumbency, however soft tissue point A', B', and Pog' did not undergo significant changes after orthodontic treatment. 2. Remarkable increment of upper lip thickness and upper lip height was shown and this was related to upper incisor retraction. The ratio between the amount of upper incisor retraction and the increment o f upper lip thickness was approximately 1.16:1. 3. Moderate correlation of upper lip retraction to upper incisor retraction, and of lower lip retraction to lower incisor movement were arranged, and yet comparatively wide variability from subject to subject was shown. 4. It was possible to predict statistically for horizontal alteration of lip position and change of upper lip angulation ground in orthodontic treatment.

  • In this paper, we propose an AR (Augmented Reality) lip makeup using bare hands interactively using an RGB camera. Unlike previous interactive makeup studies, this interactive lip makeup system is based on an RGB camera. Also, the system controls the makeup area in pixels, not in polygon-units. For pixel-unit controlling, the system also proposed a 'Rendering Map' that can store the relative position of the touched hand relative to the lip landmarks. With the map, the part to be changed in color can be specified in the current frame. And the lip color of the corresponding area is adjusted, even if the movement of the face changes in the next frame. Through user experiments, we compare quantitatively and qualitatively our makeup method with the conventional polygon-unit method. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method enhances the quality of makeup with a little sacrifice of computational complexity. It is confirmed that natural makeup similar to the actual lip makeup is possible by dividing the lip area into more detailed areas. Furthermore, the method can be applied to make the face makeup of other areas more realistic.

  • Purpose : Prediction for soft tissue change after orthognathic surgery is very important for the final esthetics. In this study, we have tried to get the amount of upper lip movement relative to bony segment movement after anterior segmental osteotomy by cephalmetric analysis to predict final upper lip position after surgery. Material and Methods : 20 patients was studied on whom anterior segmental osteotmy as performed by Cupar method during the years 2002 to 2003. Cephalometric radiograph were taken at 1month before surgery and 6 month after surgery. Change of upper lip was measured on landmark Ls and Sto relative to hard tissue (landmark Ia) setback on these X-rays and analyzed. Results : 1. Upper lip setback movement. Setback of upper lip showed proportional relation to the hard tissue setback and the ratio was about 84%(p=0.001). 2. Upper lip downward movement. Downward movement of upper lip showed no proportional relation to hard tissue setback And the amount was mean 1.38 mm and SD 1.21mm (p=0.922). Conclusion : The posterior movement of upper lip is affected by hard tissue movement and shows good proportional change whereas downward movement is not so much influenced by hard tissue movement. And we think slight downward movement shown in this study could be explained by the V-Y closure performed during surgery.

  • Cleft lip and palate is the most common malformation in the craniofacial region. The patients with cleft lip and palate have functional problem such as, speech, feeding and respiratory as well as esthetic problem. So, treatment should be done by multidiciplinary team approach. The role of pediatric dentist in the team is advicement for feeding method, guidance of normal growth, caries control and preventive orthodontics. In cleft lip and palate patients, maxillary arch after cheiloplasty is usually collapsed by excessive tension of the scar. This collapse increase the difficulty of later orthodontic treatment. Therefore, the maxillary arch segments should be moved and retaind to normal position as soon as cheiloplasty is done to reduce the need and difficulty of orthodontic treatment. This concept is called by the early orthopedic treatment in cleft lip and palate. Also, this orthopedic appliance works as feeding applince to normal feeding and weight gain We reported two cases of early orthopedic treatment with favorable result in complete bilateral cleft lip and palate patients after cheiloplasty. Patients showed normal weight and their maxillary arch widths were increased.

  • Orthodontic treatment planning of cleft lip and palate requires consideration of the characteristic features, growth pattern and functional disorders related to cleft lip and palate patients. Tissue deficiencies and constriction of the scar tissue in surgically treated cleft lip and palate results in disturbance of maxillary growth and deficiency of midfacial region with anterior and posterior crossbite. These patients often present congenital missing of teeth, supernumerary teeth, malformed teeth, or ectopic position of teeth, which should be treated by orthodontic treatment by expanding upper arch followed by fixed appliance. Proper use of retainer and continuous follow-up is needed to prevent relapse after orthodontic treatment has finished. Also we have to pay attention to correct speech disorder which is caused by the velopharyngeal insufficiency.

  • By observing the correlationships between the characteristics of the facial pattern and the methods of establishing the position of the lower central incisor to the five reference lines on the lateral roentgenocephalograms, the author tried to find the most useful method of them, the criteria of which were the independence of a variation according to facial patterns, the close relationships with soft tissue and lip balance, and the simple and consistent usefulness in clinical practice. The subject consisted of forty normal occlusions, forty class II div I malocclusions, forty class III malocclusions, ten treated claas II div 1 cases and ten treated class III cases, all were in 14-17 yrs of age. The findings of this study are as follows: 1. The position of the lower central incisor to EP, OP, MP and NB showed variations according to ANB, FMA, facial convexity and Holdaway angle. 2. The position of the lower central incise. to AP line (A-Pog) was not co..elated with ANB, FMA, facial convexity and Holdaway angle, so it can be used consistently, regardlesss of the facial pattern. 9. The lineal position of the incisal edge of the lower central incisor to AP line has a profound influence on harmonious soft tissue and lip balance.

  • In this paper, we studied about the extraction of the parameter and implementation of speechreading system to recognize the Korean 8 vowel. Face features are detected by amplifying, reducing the image value and making a comparison between the image value which is represented for various value in various color space. The eyes position, the nose position, the inner boundary of lip, the outer boundary of upper lip and the outer line of the tooth is found to the feature and using the analysis the area of inner lip, the hight and width of inner lip, the outer line length of the tooth rate about a inner mouth area and the distance between the nose and outer boundary of upper lip are used for the parameter. 2400 data are gathered and analyzed. Based on this analysis, the neural net is constructed and the recognition experiments are performed. In the experiment, 5 normal persons were sampled. The observational error between samples was corrected using normalization method. The experiment show very encouraging result about the usefulness of the parameter.
