Implementation of the Kernel Hardening Function in the Linux Kernel (리눅스 커널에서 하드닝 기능 구현)

  • A panic state is often caused by careless computer control. It could be also caused by a kernel programmer's mistake. When panic is occurred, the process of the panic state has to be checked, then if it can be restored, operating system restores it, but if not, operating system runs the panic function to stop the system in the kernel hardening O.S. To decide recovery of the process, the type of the panic for the present process should be checked. The value type and the address type have to restore the process. If the system process has a panic state, the system should be designed to shutdown hardening function in the Linux operating system.

  • We can easily buy network system for high performance micro-processor, progress computer architecture is caused of high bandwidth and low delay time. Coupling PC-based commodity technology with distributed computing methodologies provides an important advance in the development of single-user dedicated systems. Lately Network is joined PC or workstation by computers of high performance and low cost. Than it make intensive that Cluster system is resembled supercomputer. Unix, Linux, BSD, NT(Windows series) can use Cluster system OS(operating system). I'm chosen linux gain low cost, high performance and open technical documentation. This paper is benchmark performance of Beowulf clustering by UltraSPARC-1K(64bit-RISC processor). Benchmark tools use MPI(Message Passing Interface) and NetPIPE. Beowulf is a class of experimental parallel workstations developed to evaluate and characterize the design space of this new operating point in price-performance.

  • In this paper, we describe a blocking method of buffer overflow attack for secure operating system. Our team developed secure operating system using MAC and ACL access control added on Linux kernel. We describe secure operating system (SecuROS) and standardized Secure utility and library. A working prototype able to detect and block buffer overflow attack is available.

  • Currently most of commercial operating systems contain a high-level audit feature to increase their own security level. Linux does not fall behind the other commercial operating systems in performance and stability, but Linux does not have a good audit feature. Linux is required to support a higher security feature than C2 level of the TCSEC in order to be used as a server operating system, which requires the kernel-level audit feature that provides the system call auditing feature and audit event. In this paper, we present LxBSM, which is a kernel module to provide the kernel-level audit features. The audit record format of LxBSM is compatible with that of Sunshield BSM. The LxBSM is implemented as a loadable kernel module, so it has the enhanced usability. It provides the rich audit records including the user-level audit events such as login/logout. It supports both the pipe and file interface for increasing the connectivity between LxBSM and intrusion detection systems (IDS). The performance of LxBSM is compared and evaluated with that of Linux kernel without the audit features. The response time was increased when the system calls were called to create the audit data, such as fork, execve, open, and close. However any other performance degradation was not observed.

  • I design an Embedded File System in Linux Operating System by applying modified LZSS compressed algorithm. This suggested Compressed File System which is modified file system of the Linux O.S saves the storage space. The compressed file system supports efficient use of storage space. The suggesting file system solves the small space of embedded system. The suggesting file system of this paper gives effect of the large storage space without extending the storage space.

  • This paper implements dual-kernel system using standard Linux and real-time embedded Linux for the real-time control of intelligent robot systems. Such system provides more useful services including standard Linux thread that is easy to implement complicated tasks and real-time tasks for the deterministic response to velocity control. Here, an open source real-time embedded Linux, XENOMAI, is ported on embedded target board. And for interfacing with motor controller we adopted a real-time serial device driver. The real-time task was implemented with a priority to keep the cyclic control command for trajectory control. In order to validate deterministic response of the proposed system, the performance measurement of the delay in performing trajectory control with feedback loop is evaluated with non real-time standard Linux. The proposed software architecture is anticipated to take advantage of features in both standard Linux and real-time operating systems for the intelligent robot systems.

In addition, Linux is also used like a desktop or mobile devices, smart TV and cars. In particular, stepping up to the IoT era at this time is expected to be greater proportion occupied by Linux. As the use of Linux has increased security has emerged as an important factor. User management is core of Linux system security. In this paper, Classifying Linux user and analyzed the role of the user-specific file. Finally, we analyzed the linux management technologies and useful user security tools.

  • To support distributed environment that is independent and standardized between heterogeneous system, a study on the TAO(The ACE ORB) communication middleware based on the RT-CORBA is highly being done. The TAO supports real-time features not on the general purpose operating system like Windows or Linux but on the real time operating system like Vxworks or LynxOS. In this paper, we build and construct environment that supports a thread-level real time feature by porting the TAO on VxWorks target. Also we validate the ported TAO by network communication with the TAO of Windows.

  • The software running on avionic system is required to be highly reliable and productive. The air transport industry has developed ARINC Specification 653(ARINC653) as a standardized software requirement of avionics computers. The document specifies the interface boundary between avionics application software and the core executive software. Dependability in ARINC 653 is provided by spatial and temporal partitioning whilst fault-tolerance is provided by health monitoring mechanism. Legacy real-time operating systems are used to support ARINC653 health monitor on integrated modular avionics(IMA). However, legacy real-time operating systems are costly and difficult to modify the kernel. In this paper, we suggest a Linux-based ARINC653 health monitor. Functionalities to support ARINC653 health monitor are implemented as a Linux kernel module and its performance is evaluated.

  • The Linux operating system is expanding to include desktops and servers, as well as mobile devices, automobiles and embedded devices, and is the dominant operating system category because it is freely available and open source software. However, the desktop market is dominated by Microsoft's Windows, and Apple's Mac OS is increasingly dominated by enthusiasts, but Linux's growth is stagnant. An important element to make up for this deficiency is the X Window System. Most Linux distributions still use the traditional X.org server as the X Window System, but it is heavy and slow. To replace it, a new X window system called Wayland emerged. Wayland is small and light enough to fit on an embedded or mobile device, so it can be mounted on the IoT related device as well as on the desktop. With the advent of Wayland, the change in the X window will accelerate the popularization of Linux.
