한국어에는 주격 표지를 가진 명사가 두 번 이상 나타나는 구문이 자주 나타난다. 이러한 구문을 주격 중출 구문이라고 한다. 주격 중출 구문은 크게 부분-전체 구문, 양화사 유동 구문, 그리고 심리 술어 구문으로 나누어진다. 본고에서는 부분-전체 구문과 양화사 유동 구문은 함수-논항 관계를 이용하여 분석하고, 심리 술어 구문은 의미역할과 자리 이동으로 설명한다. 이러한 것은 의미적 측면과 통사적 측면을 함께 고려한 것으로 좀 더 일관성 있는 설명을 위한 접근이라 하겠다.

Pronouns are frequently used in English, and their resolution is important to capture meaning of sentences. This paper provides a computational implementation for pronoun readings in English, based on Chierchia's (1988) Binding Theory in Categorial Grammar. A CCG-like system is newly devised for implementing his ideas, where syntactic phenomena are represented by the functor-argument relations of categories. This relation triggers resolution algorithms, and reflexives and pronominals are resolved succinctly. In sum, this paper gives an efficient resolution algorithm for English pronouns within Categorial Grammar.

In English we find two aspectual menaings, progressiveness and habits, which do not seem to fit in any of the classical four situation types of state, activity, accomplishment and achievement, established by Vendler in 1967. This paper analyzes the aspectual features of progressiveness and habits to find out their similarities to and differences from Vendler's four types. It turns out that the progressiveness has the same features as those of activity, and that the habits has independent combination of aspectual features distinguished from any of the four types.

This paper examines syntactic categorial properties of “be” in Korean EFL beginners' utterances. Mainly based upon the acquisition data in Han (2000) and Shin (2000), it proposes that the so-called “S-be-X” construction is a projection of “underdeveloped” functional category F. The projection FP is different from other standard functional categories in that its head is not fully fledged.

In this paper I review previous analyses of specific indefinites, and propose a new analysis. The main claim is that a specific indefinite presupposes that an agent, a speaker in general, has in mind an individual which satisfies the descriptive content. I provide evidence for the ambiguity view of specificity. First, I show that a specific indefinite triggers a pre- supposition. Second, I show that a specific indefinite is a strong quantifier while a nonspecific is a weak one. Finally, I discuss different behaviors of specific and nonspecific indefinites in anaphora.

This paper argues that AGREE and Multiple AGREE are not distinct, and they are constrained by a single Minimality condition. It is argued, contra Chomsky (2001) and Hiraiwa (2000), that Multiple AGREE takes place not simultaneously but sequentially on the basis of a Minimality Condition. That makes it possible to assimilate Multiple AGREE to AGREE.

As pronouns are resolved with their antecedents, definite NPs may enter into the anaphora-antecedent relations with indefinite NPs. This paper is to provide faster and more efficient computational algorithms by which definite NPs are resolved effectively, For this purpose, this paper extends Chierchia's Binding Theory in Categorial Grammar, and definite NPs are resolved with their antecedents by similar algorithms that are used to reflexive resolution. In these algorithms, the relations between indefinite NP and definite NP are represented with λ-expressions, and definite NPs are resolved with their antecedent by λ-conversions.

This paper proposes an empty constituent, a silent beat, to express long duration of stressed syllable in the word final position and rhythmic correspondence in English. This empty constituent has an important consequence. It helps reveal one of the characteristics English feet have: they must be non-final in nouns as well as in verbs. In addition, the silent beats overcome the shortcomings of empty constituents proposed previously, namely null vowels (Burzio 1994) and invisible suffixes (Hammond 1999).

본 논문에서는 한국어의 전산처리를 위한 문법 모형 개발의 일부분으로 HPSG에 기반한 문법 모형의 개발을 시도한다. 문법 모형의 개발에는 ALE(Attribute Logic Engine)를 이용하며, 보문 구조와 보조 용언 구문을 분석하기 위한 사전구조 및 문법 규칙을 제시한다. 그리고 문의 종류 (Sentence Type:ST)와 문계(Sentence Level: SL), 시제, 존대 등을 분석해서 표상하기 위한 유형 계층 및 어휘부, 문법 규칙, 문법 원리 등을 제시한다.

This paper will show that traditional approaches to the derivation of different negative words have been of an essentially hypothetical nature, based on either linguists' intuitions or rather scant evidence, and that native-speaker dictionary entries show meaning potentials (rather than meanings) which are in fact linguistic and cognitive prototypes. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that using a large corpus of natural language can provide better answers to questions about word-formation (i.e., with particular reference to negative prefixation) than any other source of information.
