  • This paper presents the structural characteristics of slab-column connections by using nonlinear finite element analysis. FEA considering material non-linearity was performed to investigate average column strain, failure mode, principal stress distribution, and steel yielding conditions for various slab-column members. In addition, to investigate alternative methods for improving the strength of interior column-slab joints, some specimens were provided with different reinforcing types of high-strength concrete puddling, high-strength column longitudinal steels, dowel bars, and high-strength concrete core. To make certain of the reliability of the analytical program, analysis results for concrete material model developed and two specimens with and without puddling were compared with experimental results. It was found that providing the alternative reinforcing methods in the slab-column joint results in a significant improvement in performance. This includes an increase in the axial compressive strength, greater loading stiffness, and ductility.

  • Glove valves are used for various purposes in the process control field because such valves enable easy control of temperature and pressure. However, such valves are associated with significant loss of pressure and also have the disadvantage of complicating the shape of the cage or plug to facilitate linear flow rate change. In this paper, the shape of the plug, one of the valve flow control elements, was designed to improve the flow characteristics of the glove valve, and then CFD analysis was performed using compressible fluid. The numerical analysis results of the glove valve were analyzed according to the opening ratio and the pressure ratio of the valve. From these results, it was found that the proper notch on the side of the plug contributed to reducing the energy loss of the fluid through the valve and improving the linearity of the valve.

  • Recently, as the environmental regulation for earth moving equipment has been tightened, advanced systems using electronic control have been introduced for energy savings. An IMV(Independent Metering Valve), which consists of four 2-way valves, is one of the electro-hydraulic control systems that provides more flexible controllability and potential for energy savings in excavators, when compared to the conventional 4-way spool valve system. To fully realize an IMV, a two-stage bi-directional flow control valve which can regulate the large amount of flow in both directions, should be developed in advance. A simple design that allows proportional flow control to apply the pilot pressure from the current-controlled solenoid to the spring loaded flow control spool and thus valve displacement, is proportional to the solenoid current. However, this open-loop type valve is vulnerable to flow force which directly affects the valve displacement. Force feedback servo of which the position loop is closed by the feedback spring which interconnects the solenoid valve and flow control spool, could compensate for the flow force. In this study, linearity for the solenoid current input and robustness against load pressure disturbance is investigated by linear analysis of the static nonlinear equations for the IMV proportional flow control valve with feedback spring. Gains of the linear system confirm the performance improvement with the feedback spring design.

  • In this paper, the numerical study has been done for the improvement of the superdetonative ram accelerator performance and for the design optimization of the system. The objective function to optimize the premixture composition is the ram tube length, required to accelerate projectile from initial velocity V/sub 0/ to target velocity V/sub e/. The premixture is composed of H₂, O₂, N₂ and the mole numbers of these species are selected as design variables. RSM(Response Surface Methodology) which is widely used for the complex optimization problems is selected as the optimization technique. In particular, to improve the non-linearity of the response and to consider the accuracy and the efficiency of the solution, design space stretching technique has been applied. Separate sub-optimization routine is introduced to determine the stretching position and clustering parameters which construct the optimum regression model. Two step optimization technique has been applied to obtain the optimal system. With the application of stretching technique, we can perform system optimization with a small number of experimental points, and construct precise regression model for highly non-linear domain. The error compared with analysis result is only 0.01% and it is demonstrated that present method can be applied to more practical design optimization problems with many design variables.

  • In this paper, a matrix converter with improved low frequency output performance is proposed by achieving a one-step commutation owing to a general commutation circuit applicable to n-phase to m-phase matrix converters. The commutation circuit consists of simple resister and capacitor components, leading to a very stable, reliable and robust operation. Also, it requires no extra sensing information to achieve commutation, allowing for a one-step commutation like a conventional dead time commutation. With the dead time commutation strategy applied, the distortion caused by commutation delay is analyzed and compensated, therefore leading to better output linear behavior. In this paper, detailed commutation procedures of the R-C commutation circuit are analyzed. A selection of specific semiconductor switches and commutation circuit components is also provided. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed commutation method is verified through a two-phase to single-phase matrix converter and the feasibility of the compensation approach is shown by an open loop space vector modulated three-phase matrix converter with a passive load.

  • This paper proposes the new hybrid adaptive controller for fast response time and precision control of automation system which exist deadzone or non-linearity of system. The proposed system, which provides the improvement in terms of the control region in high speed and precision control, first used the fuzzy control method for fast response time and when the error reaches the preset value, used the PLL method designing PFD improved jitter for precision control. The new designed PFD improves the jitter noise and response characteristic without generating deadzone. The theoretical and experimental studies have been carried out. The presented results from the above investigation show considerably improved performance in the position control of automation system.

  • Simple signs were usually exchanged as the means of underwater communications. As people recently, need more informations for underwater activities, necessities of underwater communication systems exchanging hunman voice are increased. The purpose of this paper is understanding the ordinary characteristics of underwater communication and investigating the necessary conditions for a good underwater communication system by making a basic communication module. The experiment is achieved by applying AM (Amplitude Modulation) which is mainly used for the underwater communication systems and using common ultrasonic transducers. Ultrasonic transducers usually have narrow bandwidth for transducing electrical energy to mechanical energy. For improvement of sound reconstruction, transducers need more bandwidth which covers voice's frequency range, and goof linearity characteristics in this frequency range. As underwater transmissions have many factors to distort signals. Amplitude Modulation is not a proper way for underwater communications. Using digital signal by sampling human voice should be a good way for this systems, because digital communication simplify transmitting signals.

  • The combination of spatial latticed structures (hereafter SLS) and flexible cables, the cable-stayed spatial latticed structures (hereafter CSLS) can cross longer span. According to variation principle, a novel geometric nonlinear formulation for 3-D bar elements considering large displacement and infinitesimal rotation increments with second-order precision is developed. The cable nonlinearity is investigated and it is taken that the secant modulus method can be considered as an exact method for a cable member. The tower column with which the cables link is regarded as a special kind of beam element, and, a new simplified stiffness formulation is presented. The computational strategies for the nonlinear dynamic response of structures are given, and the ultimate load carrying capacities and seismic responses are analyzed numerically. It is noted that, compared with corresponding spatial latticed shells, the cable-stayed spatial latticed shells have more strength and more stiffness, and that the verical seismic responses of both CSLS and CLS are remarkably greater than the horizontal ones. In addition, the computation shows that the stiffness of tower column influences the performance of CSLS to a certain extent and the improvement of structural strength and stiffness of CSLS is relevant not only to cables but also to tower columns.
