A comparative study of metal artifacts from common metal orthodontic brackets in magnetic resonance imaging

  • Purpose: This study was performed to compare the metal artifacts from common metal orthodontic brackets in magnetic resonance imaging. Material and Methods: A dry mandible with 12 intact premolars was prepared, and was scanned ten times with various types of brackets: American, 3M, Dentaurum, and Masel orthodontic brackets were used, together with either stainless steel (SS) or nickel titanium (NiTi) wires. Subsequently, three different sequences of coronal and axial images were obtained: spin-echo $T_1$-weighted images, fast spin-echo $T_2$-weighted images, and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images. In each sequence, the two sequential axial and coronal images with the largest signal-void area were selected. The largest diameters of the signal voids in the direction of the X-, Y-, and Z-axes were then measured twice. Finally, the mean linear values associated with different orthodontic brackets were analyzed using one-way analysis of variation, and the results were compared using the independent t-test to assess whether the use of SS or NiTi wires had a significant effect on the images. Results: Statistically significant differences were only observed along the Z-axis among the four different brands of orthodontic brackets with SS wires. A statistically significant difference was observed along all axes among the brackets with NiTi wires. A statistically significant difference was found only along the Z-axis between nickel-free and nickel-containing brackets. Conclusion: With respect to all axes, the 3M bracket was associated with smaller signal-void areas. Overall, the 3M and Dentaurum brackets with NiTi wires induced smaller artifacts along all axes than those with SS wires.

Application of Linear Schedule Chart for Schedule Management of Linear Construction Project (선형시설물 공정관리 활용을 위한 선형공정표 활용 시스템 구축 방안)

  • Unlike building construction projects, where the activity is repeatedly carried out in a limited area, civil engineering projects such as roads and railroads are carried out in a linear type in a horizontal working space over several tens of kilometers. Each activity is managed with a station number that has a unit of distance from the starting point to the end point. For this reason, since the work location information of the activity is a major management factor, the Gantt chart system that expresses only schedule information may have limitations. In this study, authors propose a method for constructing a linear schedule chart that can simultaneously express schedule information indicating the start and finish dates and location information indicating the start and end positions of each activity, and develop a system for generating a linear schedule chart. In the study, the coordinate axes of the linear schedule chart consisted of distance and date values on the X and Y axes, respectively, and each activity was expressed as a symbol that can infer the type of work to increase the visibility of the linear schedule chart compared to the simple bar chart method. The linear schedule chart generation system was reviewed for practical applicability by utilizing the actual schedule data of bridge structures in a railroad project.

  • In this study, 3-dimensional linear and non-linear vehicle models are proposed to improve ride quality. The simulations of a vehicle passing over a bump were performed with those two vehicle models. The dynamic responses of the models were analyzed in time-domain and frequency-domain. Then, discomforts in each vibration axis and the combined-axes were evaluated based on the vibrations of the proposed models. The actual vehicle test results in time domain and frequency domain. Also, the discomfort values were compared. Then the validity of those two models were verified. Also, the design parameters of the suspension system are proposed for improving the ride quality.

  • In this study, when the nonlinear overhead crane which allows simultaneously travel and traverse motion moves a desired transport route, the object suspended the end of rope does undesirable swing motion. Nonlinear overhead crane pertubes in the vicinity of an operating point, therefore the nonlinear overhead crane is modified to linear overhead crane for the operating point. The linear overhead crane was controlled to swing angles of the object by the ratio of torque inputs to motors of the girder and the trolley. As a basis for the result of the linear overhead crane, the nonlinear overhead crane was controlled swing angles of the object and positions of the overhead crane without collision with environmental equipment by partial state feedback control.

  • This paper deals with the performance analysis of static compensator (STATCOM) based voltage regulator for self­excited induction generators (SEIGs) supplying balanced/unbalanced and linear/ non-linear loads. In practice, most of the loads are linear. But the presence of non-linear loads in some applications injects harmonics into the generating system. Because an SEIG is a weak isolated system, these harmonics have a great effect on its performance. Additionally, SEIG's offer poor voltage regulation and require an adjustable reactive power source to maintain a constant terminal voltage under a varying load. A three-phase insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based current controlled voltage source inverter (CC- VSI) known as STATCOM is used for harmonic elimination. It also provides the required reactive power an SEIG needs to maintain a constant terminal voltage under varying loads. A dynamic model of an SEIG-STATCOM system with the ability to simulate varying loads has been developed using a stationary d-q axes reference frame. This enables us to predict the behavior of the system under transient conditions. The simulated results show that by using a STATCOM based voltage regulator the SEIG terminal voltage can be maintained constant and free from harmonics under linear/non linear and balanced/unbalanced loads.

A curved shell finite element for the geometrically non-linear analysis of box-girder beams curved in plan

  • A four-noded curved shell finite element for the geometrically non-linear analysis of beams curved in plan is introduced. The structure is conceived as a sequence of macro-elements (ME) having the form of transversal segments of identical topology where each slice is formed using a number of the curved shell elements which have 7 degrees of freedom (DOF) per node. A curved box-girder beam example is modelled using various meshes and linear analysis results are compared to the solutions of a well-known computer program SAP2000. Linear and non-linear analyses of the beam under increasing uniformly distributed loads are also carried out. In addition to box-girder beams, the proposed element can also be used in modelling open-section beams with curved or straight axes and circular plates under radial compression. Buckling loads of a circular plate example are obtained for coarse and successively refined meshes and results are compared with each other. The advantage of this element is that curved systems can be realistically modelled and satisfactory results can be obtained even by using coarse meshes.

  • In spinning satellite, a gyrotorquer generates a control torquer along two orthogonal axes normal to the spin axis of the vehicle. Matrix Fraction Description(MFD) are used to obtain minimal realization of the transfer matrix relating the attitude angles and the rate of rotation of the gimbals of gyrotorquer. In this paper, the Linear Quadratic Gaussian with Loop Transfer Recovery and H.meihodologies are used to design controller for spinning satellite.

  • A kineamatic nonlinear multivariable laundher is modeled of which the azimoth and elevation axes are drived simultaneously and SISO and MIMO LQG/LTR controllers are designed and evaluated for this system. Also, the suitable command input function is suggested for the desired command following performance and the LQG/LTR control system with disturbances and load variation is evaluated for the entire operating range by computer simulation. It is found that the linear SISO LQG/LTR controller can be used for the kinematic nonlinear multivariable launder in the entire operating range and is effective for disturbance rejection and load variation.

  • Many RC building structures of multiple uses constructed in Korea have the Irregularities of torsion and soft story at bottom stories simultaneously. Seismic design codes generally require dynamic analysis and to take into account the effect or earthquake excitations in the orthogonal direction using the approximate methods of 100/30 and SRSS for type of building structures. And ail buildings should be designed to be safe in any direction of earthquake input. But, most of designers have difficulty in considering the orthogonal and directional effect of earthquake. The objective of the study stated herein is to verily 1) the effect of the choice of the reference axes on the seismic design member forces by comparing the analytical results on member forces using the principal axes suggested by Wilson and the global axes generally adopted in design office, 2) the validity or the 100/30 and SRSS methods by comparing the member forces obtained through linear elastic time history analysis with those obtained through using response spectrum analysis and 100/30 (or SRSS) methods. Based on the observations on the analytical results, it is concluded as follows; 1) The values of member forces by principal axes can be about $15\%$ smaller than those by the global axes in the example structure. 2) Though the values of member forces given by time history analysis are generally within the peak values predicted by 100/30 and SRSS methods, many member force vectors $(P,\;M_y,\;and\;M_z)$ by lime history analysis were located outside the boundaries predicted by the approximate method such as the 100/30 method.

  • Measurements of linear motion accuracy for one axis of NC lathe have achieved with laser interferometer system, but measurement of plane motion accuracy for two axes on zx-plane of NC lathe have not achieved with the above system. Therefore in this study, measuring unit system is organized using two optical linear scales in order to acquire error. data during of plane motion of ATC(Automatic Tool Change.) of NC lathe by reading zx-plane coordinates. Two optical linear scales of measuring unit are fixed on zx-plane of NC lathe, and moving part of the scales are fixed to the ATC and then error motion data of z, x-coordinates of the ATC are received from the scales through the PC counter card inserted in computer at constant time intervals using tick pulses coming out from computer. And then, error motion data files acquired from measuring are saved in computer memory and the aspect of plane motion are modeled to plots, and range of the error data, means. average deviations, and standard deviations etc. are calculated by means of statistical treatments using computer programs.
