Higher productivity requires high-speed motion of machine tool axes. The iron core linear DC motor (LDM) is widely accepted as a viable candidate for high-speed machine tool feed unit. LDM, however, has two inherent disturbance force components, namely cogging and thrust force ripple. These disturbance forces directly affect the tracking accuracy of the feeding system and must be eliminated or reduced. In order to reduce motor ripple, this research adapted the feedforward compensation method and neural network control. Experiments carried out with the linear motor test setup show that these control methods are effective in reducing motor ripple.

A method of design optimization for minimization of force ripple and maximization of thrust force in a linear brushless permanent magnet motor without finite element analysis is represented. The design optimization method calculated the driving force in the function of electric and geometric parameters of a linear brushless PM motor using the sequential quadratic programming method. Using electric and geometric parameters obtained by this method, the normalized force ripple is reduced 7.7% (9.7% to 2.0%) and the thrust force is increased 12.88N (111.55N to 124.43N) compared to those not using design optimization.
The vibration and noise caused by the dynamic interaction between electromagnetic suspension and the linear synchronous motor stator beneath a flexible guideway remain problems in designing attractive Maglev trains. One possible method to reduce the sources of vibration is to minimize the detent force in the linear synchronous motor that creates variations in both lift force and thrust. This paper proposes lowering detent force by using separated core instead of single united core. The magnet is designed to adapt to the deflected guideway at a speed of 550km/h. This study will analyze the electromagnetic field and control performance, and how they relate to lift forces and dynamic responses.
In this paper, the equivalent magnetic circuit and FEM are used to calculate force density of linear BLDC motor. The equivalent magnetic circuit is hard to exact compose for analysis model and it is just applied to linear system. To flexible design and reducing the calculated and analyzed time, magnetic circuit has to be used for designing the linear BLDC motor and deducing equation of force density. Force density as parameter of permanent magnet and coil-side width that are important to determined force density can be estimated using equation of force density. FEM is used to prove reliability of equation of force density and to consider the nonlinear system. Equivalent magnetic circuit and result of FEM are similar, but it is little different by friction loss at the experiment.

This paper presents the characteristic analysis and experiment of force characteristics in permanent magnet linear synchronous motor for accuracy prediction of linear motion machine tools. In particular, the pitching moment resulting from attraction force ripple has been analysed and tested. Firstly, we analysed the characteristics of detent force, attraction force, and pitching moment in permanent magnet linear synchronous motor according to the design techniques such as auxiliary teeth, chamfering, and permanent magnet skewing. In addition, we suggested the experimental set for measurement of pitching moment. Finally, the results from measurement shows the good agreement with those obtained from finite element analysis results.

The proposed hybrid controller consists of PID controller, feedforward controller and RLSE (Recursive Least Square Estimating) adaptive controller to compensate the force ripple that is periodic function of position in a linear motor. The modeling of force ripple is divided into the current-dependent and current-independent components. The current independent components never change as the current into the linear motor changes. On the other hand, the current-dependent components change as current varies when the velocity and load of the linear motor change. The proposed controller can compensate both force ripples. The feedforward controller compensates the current-independent components and the RLSE adaptive controller compensates the current-dependents components. We verified the performance of the controller by simulation and experiments.
This paper proposes the linear induction motor with salient poles, transverse flux and the secondary aluminum conductor for a new type urban MAGLEV. Compared with the more usual kind of linear induction motor with longitudinal flux, TFLIM have flux paths tying transversely to the direction of motion. This shortens the magnetic circuit and produces the thrust, the attraction force and the lateral stabilization force simultaneously. Owing to these electrodynamic force, TFLIM will be usable to a new type urban MGLEV.

Recently linear motor has been used mainly for high speed feeding performance of machine tools. The advantages of linear motor are not only high speed but high accuracy, because it is not required the coupling and ballscrew for converting rotary to liner motion. Before applying in different moving system, the dynamometer is necessary to test the performance. In Korea, the linear motor is producing in a couple of company However, the liner motor dynamometer is not commercialized yet, like as rotary motor dynamometer. In this paper, a linear motor dynamometer is designed and manufactured using a MR damper. The dynamometer system developed in this study could be used for testing the positioning accuracy fur different loading conditions, traction forces, dynamic performance and so on.
This paper presents a characteristics of linear induction motor considering airgap variation for railway transit in order to achieve high performance of the vehicle. The operating principle of a LIM(Linear induction motor) is identical to a rotary induction motor. Space-time variant magnetic fields are generated by the primary part across the airgap and induce the electro-motive force(EMF) in the secondary part, a conducting sheet. This EMF generates the eddy currents, which interact with the airgap flux and so produce the thrust force known as Loren's force. Even though the operating principal is exactly same as a rotary motor, the linear motor has a finite length of the primary or secondary parts and it causes static and dynamic end-effect which is the discontinuous airgap flux phenomenon. This end-effect causes the deterioration of the system performance, especially in high-speed operation. Another problem is that construction tolerance restricts the minimum airgap in order to prevent a collision between the primary part and the secondary reaction plate. More over, as the airgap length is getting smaller, the attraction force between the primary part and secondary parts is getting larger dramatically and the attraction force would be another friction against propulsion. Therefore, it is necessary to figure out the characteristics of linear induction motor considering airgap variation in order to achieve high performance of the vehicle. The dynamic model of LIM taking into account end-effects is derived. Then the modified mechanical load equation considering the effect of the attraction and thrust force according to the airgap variation is analyzed. The simulation results are presented to show the effect of the LIM according to the airgap variation.

Comparison on the performances between the Halbach array type permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (HA-PMLSM) and the convensional array type permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (CA-PMLSM) was made with finite element analysis (FEA) and experiment. The HA-PMLSM is seen to be superior to the CA-PMLSM. Optimum ratio of magnet length to slot pitch of the HA-PMLSM which reduces the detent force was determined. Also, Comparison of forces of the HA-PMLSM and the CA-PMLSM with minimum detent force is presented.
