  • The fracture mechanics analysis of surface cracks in plates and cylindrical geometries is important in the integrity evaluation of flawed structural components. The objective of this paper is, thus, to numerically investigate an interaction effect of two surface cracks in plate and cylindrical geometries. The effect of crack spacing on the magnitude of the stress intensity factor(K) is investigated using the line-spring model. For the case of a finite plate under uniaxial loading, the effect of crack spacing on the K values is negligible. However, for the case of a cylinder under moderate internal pressure, a significant increase in K values is observed at the deepest point of the surface crack.

  • Environmental impact on a land reclamation project, Hwaong tidal barrier was studied using the dispersion and advection model to predict the influence of polluted water discharged from freshwater reservior. The simulation results show that the distribution of concentration by influence of polluted water discharged during a tidal cycle appeared to be extinguished at atmost all points after two tidal cycle. Peak concentration near the sluice gate is found out to be higher during the spring tide than neap tide. Equi-concentration contour line appeared to distributed a longer according to line of sea dike in spring tide than neap tide. The reasons is because influence by currents of northwest direction is a stronger, compared to spring tide and neap tide in the flood tide.

  • An end-line flame arrester allows free venting in combination with flame protection for vertical vent applications. End-line flame arresters are employed in various fields, especially in shipping. In flame arresters, springs are essential parts because the spring load and the spring's elasticity determine the hood opening moment. In addition, the spring has to work under a high-temperature condition because of the burning gas flame. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the mechanical load and elasticity of the spring when the flame starts to appear. Based on simulations of the working process of a specific end-line flame arrester, a thermal and structural analysis of the spring is performed. A three-dimensional model of a burned spring is built using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Results of the CFD analysis are input into a finite element method simulation to analyze the spring structure. The research team focused on three cases of spring loads: 43, 93, and 56 kg, correspondingly, at 150 mm of spring deflection. Consequently, the spring load was reduced by 10 kg after 5 min under a $1,000^{\circ}C$ heat condition. The simulation results can be used to predict and estimate the spring's load and elasticity at the burning time variation. Moreover, the obtained outcome can provide the industry with references to optimize the design of the spring as well as that of the flame arrester.

  • In the shipyard, line heating and triangle heating are two major processes for forming curved plates in various shapes. While there have been many studies on line heating, triangle heating has been rarely studied due to its complicated heating process with irregular multi-heating paths and highly concentrated heat input. As the triangle heating process is one of the most labor-consuming jobs in shipyards, it is essential to study the automation as well as improvement of triangle heating process in order to increase hull forming productivity. In this study, a pioneering attempt to simulate triangle heating was made. A circular disk-spring model was proposed for elasto-plastic analysis procedure of triangle heating and the inherent strain method was also used to analyze the deformation of plates. Simulation results were compared with those of experiments and showed good agreement. It is shown that the present approach including analysis model used in this study is effective to simulate the triangle heating for plate forming process in shipbuilding.

  • Flame arrestor as end of line flame arrester for endurance burning prevents a light-back at deflagration and stabilized burning (during and after endurance burning) of potentially explosive vapor-air and gas-air mixtures at the end of vent pipes. In a flame arrestor, spring is an important part. The spring load as well as the spring's elasticity determine when the hood is opened. In addition, the spring have to work in high temperature condition due to gas burning. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze mechanical load and elasticity of spring when gas is burned. Based on the dynamic calculation on working process of a specific flame arrestor, analysis of spring is taken. A three dimensional model for spring burned in flame arrestor by using CFD simulation. Results of the CFD analysis are input in FEM simulation to analyze structure of the spring. The simulation results can predict and estimate the spring's load and elasticity at variation of the spring's deflection. Moreover, the obtained result can provide makers with references to optimize design of spring as well as flame arrestor.

  • Optimization of mesh discretization has been proposed to improve the accuracy of limit analysis solution of collapse load by using the Rigid Body Spring Model(R. B. S. M) under the plane strain condition. Moreover, the fracture behaviour of materials was investigated by employing the fracture mechanism of a spring connecting the triangular rigid body element. It has been clarified that the collapse load and the geometry of slip boundary for optimized mesh discretization were close to those of the slip line solution. Further, the wedge-shaped fracture of a cylinder under a lateral load and the central fracture of a strip in the drawing process were well simulated.

  • An investigation into the response statistics of a spring-pendulum system whose base oscillates randomly along vertical and horizontal line is made. The spring-pendulum system with internal resonance examined is known to be a good model for a variety of engineering systems, including ship motions with nonlinear coupling between pitching and rolling motions. The Fokker-Planck equation is used to generate a general first-order differential equations for the random responses of the system are reduced to a system of autonomous ordinary differential equations. In view of equilibrium solutions of this system and their stability, the response statistics is examined. It is seen that increase in horizontal excitation level leads to a decreased width of the internal resonance region.

  • This paper proposes a software development guidance and an evaluation index for the productivity related to Spring 2.5 and EJB 3.0 with same lightweight container architecture. Spring is a known successful open source standard model for lightweight container architecture. EJB in an enterprise environment as a standard framework is most commonly used in production. However, there is no comparison research about the performance of Spring 2.5 and EJB 3.0 Framework with same identical platform. Quantitative analysis is supported as a part of LoC(Line of Code) analysis. There is a limit to develop the updated software with no the specific evaluating index for the productivity of the software. In this study, the development platform environment based on the same pilot system Spring 2.5 and EJB 3.0 framework is in the design and implementation. In addition, comparison and standardization of software development productivity assessment is to provide guidance.

  • Damages by jellyfish are occurring frequently around the world. Among them, accidents caused by jellyfish stings are serious enough to cause death. So we designed a jellyfish blocking net and analyzed its stability to prevent sting caused by jellyfish entering the beach. To this end, the dynamic behavior of the jellyfish blocking net according to the current speed (0.25-1.0 m/s) and the net type (50, 100 and 150 mm) on the upper part of the blocking net was modeled using the mass spring model. As a result of simulations for the model, the horizontal tension (horizontal component of the mooring tension) of the mooring line increased with the decrease in the mesh size on the upper part of the blocking net at all current speeds, but exceeded the holding force at high tides faster than 0.5 m/s and exceeded the holding force at all current speeds at low tide. Therefore, the jellyfish blocking nets showed poor stability overall. The depth of the float line had a little difference according to the upper mesh size and increased lineary proportional to the current speed. However, the float line sank too much to block the incoming jellyfish. These analysis results helped us find ways to improve the stability of the jellyfish blocking net, such as adjusting the length of the mooring line and improving the holding power. Therefore, it is expected that this technology will be applied us various underwater structures to discover the weaknesses of the structures and contribute to increasing the stability in the future.
