Design of Self-Starting Hybrid Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Connected Directly to Line

  • In view of the current state of the reserves of electric energy generated resources and the share of electric motors in electricity consumption, many researches and studies related to efficiency in electric motors are being made. The presented work is related to the Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (AF-PMSM), which has recently undergone significant work based on the development of magnet and motor technology. In this study, a novel AF-PMSM was designed analytically through Finite Element Method (FEM) which can be started by connecting to a line such as an asynchronous motor in a transient state and can operate with high efficiency and power factor after synchronization in steady state without the need for an expensive motor drive. According to the obtained FEM results, a design with an efficiency class of IE4 of 5.5 kW shaft power, a 4 poles motor was obtained. As a result, economic calculations indicate that the extra cost of the designed Line start AF-PMSM with respect to the asynchronous motor is rapidly compensated by energy saving due to a more efficient operation, especially constant speed operations. As a result of the analysis obtained, the targeted values are reached. For induction motors and radial flux permanent magnet synchronous motors, a good alternative motor that can operate with high efficiency and power factor has been obtained.

Design of Magnetic Circuit of Line-start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor to Develop the Characteristics at the Steady State (정상상태 특성 개선을 위한 단상 영구자석형 동기기의 자기회로 설계)

  • This study investigates magnetic circuit design of the Single-phase Line-start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (LSPM) to develop the characteristics in steady state. In this paper, the saliency ratio, that is the ratio of q-axial inductance to d-axial inductance, and the inductance difference between q-axial inductance and d-axial inductance are increased. Design factor is selected permanent magnet position and rotor diameter. The analysis method of the synchronous motor on d-/q- axis coordinates is used for the positive component and the equivalent circuit of the induction motor is applied for the negative component analysis. Back-emf and d-q- axial inductance is analyzed by using 2 dimensional Finite Element Method (FEM). Characteristic analysis results with variation of design factor are reflected magnetic circuit design of LSPM. The characteristics of design model are compared with the characteristic of initial model.

  • This paper examines an design of double-barrier rotor structure for improving the efficiency performance in a single-phase line-start permanent magnet(LSPM) motor. By utilizing the advantages of double-barrier rotor design that by increasing reluctance torque generation to compensate magnet torque production, the copper loss reduction is achieved. The optimal approach of response surface methodogy(RSM) is performed for determining a optimum double-barrier rotor structure. The improving of efficiency performance is confirmed by finite element method(FEM) and test.

  • The single-phase line-start permanent magnet motor has been shown to be capable of very desirable steady state performance, but known to have undesirable starting performance. This is because magnetic braking torque. So, it is very important to predict starting performance accurately when designing the line-start motors. In this paper, starting performance was calculated by combination of d-q axis voltage equations and mechanical dynamic equations. D-q axis voltage components were derived by winding angle and turns ratio transformations.

  • This paper deals with optimum design criteria for maximum torque density & minimum current density of a single phase line-start permanent-magnet motor (LSPMM) using RSM (Response Surface Methodology) & FEM (Finite Element Method). The focus of this paper is to find a design solution through the comparison of torque density and minimum current density resulting from rotor shape variations. And then, a central composite design (CCD) mixed resolution is introduced, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) is conducted to determine the significance of the fitted regression model.

  • In previous structure of single phase LSPM, there is large torque ripple that makes a noise and a vibration by a distortion of flux distribution in air gap. By this reason, the single phase LSPM is not accepted home applications. So, in this paper, we propose new structure of single phase LSPM(Line Start Permanent magnet Motor). The proposed model is reduced a torque ripple about a half than previous model.

  • In this paper, we study about the stator winding magnetization method and the magnetizing fixture magnetization method in post-assembly magnetization. Most of small electrical machine use the stator winding magnetization method but it is impossible to magnetize the permanent magnet by the stator winding magnetization method when the capacity of machine increases and the coercive force of magnet increases. And the eddy current disturbs the magnetization seriously in case of LSPM(Line Start Permanent magnet Motor) that have conductor bar in rotor. Hence, the magnetization fixture is required. So, in this paper we study about the post-assembly magnetization method that can use the stator winding magnetization method or must use the magnetization fixture magnetization method.

  • This paper presents steady state analysis of single-phase line-start motor. 2-phase motor transformation is performed to consider the different specifications between main and auxiliary windings. The symmetrical coordinates transformation is applied to solve the unbalanced magnetic field. The validity of analysis method is verified by comparing to experiments.

  • SPLSSM may operate with very high efficiencies and near unity power factor, SPLSSM has been shown to be capable of desirable steady state performance, but is known to have undesirable staring performance because starting asynchronously by means of an induction cage, it operates in steady state performance of a PM motor. This combination provides the steady state performance of a permanent magnet motor without the need for an expensive drive system. However, that combination makes it difficult to analyze the transient behaviors. This paper investigates the behaviors of Single-Phase Line-Start Synchronous Motor using finite element method combined analytic method. It is shown that finite element modeling is capable of giving accurate prediction of performances. Varying the value of capacitance and material of permanent magnet shows the effect on the dynamic characteristics in this paper.
