The Aspects, Reasons and Outcomes of an Unmanned Air Vehicle Crash Caused By Engine Failure

  • The Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) systems are indispensable tools of air surveillance and reconnaissance nowadays. Via this systems, hazardous end risky intelligence gathering activities are handled easily. Although they are named as "Unmanned" the UAV systems are commanded by pilots/operators. So, because of weather conditions, enemy attacks etc. as well as pilot error it is possible to face with sudden Round per Minute (RPM) drops and subsequently engine cut/stop during a mission flight at high altitudes. In this case, there are some very urgent decisions to make and rapid "emergency procedure" steps to take in a very short time before Line of Sight (LOS) is lost. The time before crash and the distance to landing air base need to be calculated, the Return Home route need to be checked and the landing/crash side need to be determined. Therefore it is a vital necessity that UAV pilots have some extra qualifications like being determined, well instructed and trained, experienced apart from operating ability. Within this scope, for an education process of a UAV pilot experience sharing and lessons learned are as important as simulators even more. By means of lessons learned it is possible to find out the reasons, mistakes and prevent the likely UAV accidents. In this study it is told about a real UAV crash, experienced of the pilot, the dos and don'ts and the difficulties. Thus it is aimed to help the people who can experience the same or similar situations in future.

Ground Contact Analysis for Korea's Fictitious Lunar Orbiter Mission

  • In this research, the ground contact opportunity for the fictitious low lunar orbiter is analyzed to prepare for a future Korean lunar orbiter mission. The ground contact opportunity is basically derived from geometrical relations between the typical ground stations at the Earth, the relative positions of the Earth and Moon, and finally, the lunar orbiter itself. Both the cut-off angle and the orbiter's Line of Sight (LOS) conditions (weather orbiter is located at near or far side of the Moon seen from the Earth) are considered to determine the ground contact opportunities. Four KOMPSAT Ground Stations (KGSs) are assumed to be Korea's future Near Earth Networks (NENs) to support lunar missions, and world-wide separated Deep Space Networks (DSNs) are also included during the contact availability analysis. As a result, it is concluded that about 138 times of contact will be made between the orbiter and the Daejeon station during 27.3 days of prediction time span. If these contact times are converted into contact duration, the duration is found to be about 8.55 days, about 31.31% of 27.3 days. It is discovered that selected four KGSs cannot provide continuous tracking of the lunar orbiter, meaning that international collaboration is necessary to track Korea's future lunar orbiter effectively. Possible combinations of world-wide separated DSNs are also suggested to compensate for the lack of contact availability with only four KGSs, as with primary and backup station concepts. The provided algorithm can be easily modified to support any type of orbit around the Moon, and therefore, the presented results could aid further progress in the design field of Korea's lunar orbiter missions.

Spiral Structure and Mass Inflows in Barred-Spiral Galaxies

  • We use high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations to study nonlinear gas responses to imposed non-axisymmetric stellar potentials in barred-spiral galaxies. The gas is assumed to be infinitesimally thin, isothermal, and unmagnetized. We consider various spiral-arm models with differing strength and pattern speed, while fixing the bar parameters. We find that the extent and shapes of spiral shocks as well as the related mass drift depend rather sensitively on the pattern speed. In models where the arm pattern is rotating more slowly than the bar, the gaseous arms extend from the bar ends all the way to the outer boundary, with a pitch angle slightly smaller than that of the stellar counterpart. The arms drive mass inflows at a rate of ${\sim}0.5-2.5M{\odot}/yr$ to the bar region to which the shock dissipation, external torque, and self-gravitational torque contribute about 50%, 40%, and 10%, respectively. About 85% of the inflowing mass is added to bar substructures such as an inner ring, dust lanes, and a nuclear ring. while the remaining 15% encircles the bar region. On the other hand, models where the arms corotate with the bar exhibit mass outflows, rather than inflows, over most of the arm region. In these models, spiral shocks are much more tightly wound than the stellar arms and cease to exist in the region where $M{\bot}/sinp*{\geq}25-40$, where $M{\bot}$ denotes the Mach number of a rotating gas perpendicular to the arms with pitch angle p*. We demonstrate that the distributions of line-of-sight velocities and densities can be a useful diagnostic tool to distinguish if the arms and bar corotate or not.

  • Satellite-Digital Multimedia Broadcasting(S-DMB) systems are single frequency networks which consist of a satellite and gap fillers. Though gap fillers are required to extend the coverage to NLOS(Non Line-of-Sight) area, the receiver performance can be degraded with a limited number of fingers due to the increased number of multi-paths. The paper proposes to use frequency domain equalizer(FDE) instead of conventional Rake receiver, where the guard interval is not considered in order to minimize the impact on the current S-DMB systems. Through a campaign of simulations, it is found that the proposed FDE is less sensitive to the number of gap fillers compared to the conventional Rake receiver, and can achieve a greater channel capacity in most channel environments.

  • LTE Re1-10 aims at peak. data rates of 1Gbits/s for the downlink and 500 Mbits/s for the uplink, which can be accomplished by not only wide spectrum but also advanced MIMO techniques such as precoded MIMO and cooperative relays. Considering some relays can have more direct signal paths than mobile stations do, LoS components are examined to build more efficient codebooks for Rician channels. The proposed codebooks perform better than the existing LTE codebooks as the criterium of LoS, K-factor increases. Conserving the advantages and max-min chordal distance of the existing LTE codebooks, the proposed ones also maximize the minimum chordal distances between codewords over Rician fading channels. Link-level simulation with LTE system parameters confirm the performance improvements as the value of K increases.

  • The ground subsidence that occurred in the abandoned coal mining area, Gaeun, Korea, was observed using 25 JERS-1 SAR interferograms from November 1992 to October 1998. We carried out measurements on a subset of image pixels corresponding to point-wise stable reflectors(PS: permanent scatterer) by exploiting a long temporal series of interferometric phases and compared it with the distribution map of in situ examined crack level. PSs could be identified by means of amplitude dispersion index and coherence of the interferograms and the density of PS was much higher in an urban area than in a mountainous region. The measured subsidence rate represented the average velocity in a period of image acquisition and excluded complex nonlinear displacements such as an abrupt collapse. The mean line-of-sight velocity in the study area is 0.19cm/yr and the estimation error is 0.18cm/yr. The center of the abandoned Gaeun coal mine(0.49cm/yr) and the area opposite Gaeun station(1.66cm/yr) were observed as the most highly subsiding areas.

Application of a non-equilibrium ionization model to rapidly heated solar plasmas

  • We apply a non-equilibrium ionization (NEI) model to a supra-arcade plasma sheet, shocked plasma, and current sheet. The model assumes that the plasma is initially in ionization equilibrium at low temperature, and it is heated rapidly by a shock or magnetic reconnection. The model presents the temperature and characteristic timescale responses of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board Solar Dynamic Observatory and X-ray Telescope (XRT) on board Hinode. We compare the model ratios of the responses between different passbands with the observed ratios of a supra-arcade plasma sheet on 2012 January 27. We find that most of observations are able to be described by using a combination of temperatures in equilibrium and the plasma closer to the arcade may be close to equilibrium ionization. We also utilize the set of responses to estimate the temperature and density for shocked plasma associated with a coronal mass ejection on 2010 June 13. The temperature, density, and the line of sight depth ranges we obtain are in reasonable agreement with previous works. However, a detailed model of the spherical shock is needed to fit the observations. We also compare the model ratios with the observations of a current sheet feature on 2017 September 10. The long extended current sheet above the solar limb makes it easy to analyze the sheet without background corona. We find that the sheet feature is far from equilibrium ionization while the background plasma is close to equilibrium. We discuss our results with the previous studies assuming equilibrium ionization.

  • When disasters such as earthquake, flood, typhoon, fire and terrorism are occurred a video management system is required which can shoot video on the disaster site, and send it to a server located in the command center that can grasp at a glance the site conditions. In this paper, to know the performance elements information needed to construct the video management system. we presented a method of configuring an ad hoc network based on Wi-Fi direct communication. And we also evaluated the performance through built of environment for the video management system. The evaluated performance test items are 'packet flow tests according to the video compression ratios and the image sizes', 'packet flow tests according to the distance and traffic tests', 'packet flow tests according to whether LOS or not', and 'performance test of scenarios'.

Radome Slope Estimation using Mode Parameter Renewal Method of IMM Algorithm (IMM 알고리듬의 모드 계수 갱신 방법을 통한 레이돔 굴절률 추정)

  • A radome mounted on the front of an aircraft can cause refraction errors for various reasons that occur during maneuver in seeking and tracking a target. This refraction error means that the microwave seeker is detecting apparent target. An Interactive Multiple Model (IMM) algorithm is applied to estimate radome slope mounted on an aircraft in 3D space. However, even though the parameter of uncertain system model such as radome slope can be estimated, the estimated performance can not be guaranteed when it exceeds the range of the predicted value. In this paper, we propose a method to update the predicted value by using the radome slope as the mode parameter of the IMM algorithm, and confirm the radome slope estimation performance of the proposed method.

  • Rapid developments in wireless sensor networks have extended many applications, hence, many studies have developed wireless sensor network positioning systems for indoor environments. Among those systems, the Global Position System (GPS) is unsuitable for indoor environments due to Line-Of-Sight (LOS) limitations, while the wireless sensor network is more suitable, given its advantages of low cost, easy installation, and low energy consumption. Due to the complex settings of indoor environments and the high demands for precision, the implementation of an indoor positioning system is difficult to construct. This study adopts a low-cost positioning method that does not require additional hardware, and uses the received signal strength (RSS) values from the receiver node to estimate the distance between the test objects. Since many objects in indoor environments would attenuate the radio signals and cause errors in estimation distances, knowing the path loss exponent (PLE) in an environment is crucial. However, most studies preset a fixed PLE, and then substitute it into a radio propagation loss model to estimate the distance between the test points; such method would lead to serious errors. To address this problem, this study proposes a Path Loss Exponent Estimation Algorithm, which uses only four beacon nodes to construct a radio propagation loss model for an indoor environment, and is able to provide enhanced positioning precision, accurate positioning services, low cost, and high efficiency.
