  • To realize higher track density of HDD, the servo bandwidth should be higher, however, is limited by the mechanical resonances of the arm, coil of the VCM and ball bearing pivot. The dual-stage actuator systems have been suggested as a possible solution. For the dual-stage actuator systems based on the suspension, the suspension resonance frequencies in the radial access direction are important factors to increase a servo bandwidth, however the improvement of these frequencies may affect the shock resistance performance and spring constant. The slider's flying stability can be deteriorated by the change of a vertical stiffness. In this work, we have investigated a suspension design scheme possessing a milliactuator for dual-stage actuator systems and also achieved higher mechanical characteristics. Design parameters are deduced by finite element analysis with sensitivity function. It is confirmed that the proposed suspension with the milliactuator has the capability of fine tracking motion, due to its hinge structure on the spring region, and achieves higher mechanical resonance frequencies in the radial access direction with a high-shock resistance and a low-spring constant.

Utilization of aerobic granulation to mitigate membrane fouling in MBRs

  • Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is a compact and efficient wastewater treatment and reclamation technology; but, it is limited by membrane fouling. The control of membrane fouling significantly increases operational and maintenance costs. Bacteria and their byproducts - extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) - are major contributors to membrane fouling in MBRs. A recent attempt at fouling mitigation is the development of aerobic granular sludge membrane bioreactor (AGMBR) through the integration of a novel biotechnology - aerobic granulation - and MBR. This paper provides an overview on the development of AGMBR to mitigate membrane fouling caused by bacteria and EPS. In AGMBR, EPS are used up in granule formation; and, the rigid structure of granules provides a surface for bacteria to attach to rather than the membrane surface. Preliminary research on AGMBR using synthetic wastewater show remarkable membrane fouling reduction compared to conventional MBR, thus improved membrane filtration. Enhanced performance in AGMBR using actual municipal wastewater at pilot-scale has also been reported. Therefore, further research is needed to determine AGMBR optimal operational conditions to enhance granule stability in long-term operations and in full-scale applications.

촉매 연소기에서 희박 예혼합기의 연소특성 (Combustion Characteristics of Lean Premixed Mixture in Catalytic Combustors)

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate combustion characteristics of lean premixed mixture stabilized by catalytic surface reaction. The catalytic combustor consisted of a catalyst bed and a thermal combustor. The catalyst bed was made of two stage, Pd catalyst in the first stage and Pt catalyst in the second stage. Auto ignition of lean mixture took place in the thermal combustor. Ignition temperature was about $810{\sim}820^{\circ}C$ at the fuel-air ratio of 1.5~3.0 % and the mixture velocity of 11~18m/sec. The position of flame front in the thermal combustor moved toward back as preheat temperature increased and fuel-air ratio decreased. The f1ame supported by surface reaction was stabilized without any flame stabilizers. NOx emissions from the catalytic combustor were below 2.0 ppm ($O_2$ 15 %) when gas temperature was limited below $1350^{\circ}C$. This result demonstrates that NOx emission from the catalytic combustor is much low comparing with conventional combustors.

  • In modern society, a spontaneous phenomenon that community residents' participation in crime prevention sphere is increasing now due to the recognition that it is extremely difficult to control crime only by the limited official power(police) is spreading in the society. In the consideration of crime occurrence, the fear of crime does not belong to a certain person any more, but it turns to a matter of common interest for all people. If the recognition of community problems is well understood and analysed, the effect of community residents' participation in crime prevention will appear more eminent and definite. For a long period of time, thanks to the community residents' participation in crime prevention, it has been possible to sustain safety and stability of local community. Ultimately not only the police could reduce the crime problems but local community could decrease a fear of crime. In this study, for maximized effect of crime prevention, it is focused on the role of the community residents' participation in crime prevention. For desirable interrelations among service group and residents, police, first the review of situational crime prevention and community crime prevention theory was studied. And the community residents participation to crime prevention activity in U.S.A, Japan etc was reviewed. By interviewing actual participants in community crime prevention activity, the problems and countermeasures of the community residents' participation in crime prevention activity and desirable direction was suggested

발전기 가속에너지를 이용한 고장파급방지장치 운전조건 완화용 전기저장장치 적정용량 산정방안 (Required Capacity Assessment of Energy Storage System for Relieving Operation Condition of SPS Using Generator Acceleration Energy)

  • Due to the highly concentrated power plants integrated through the limited transmission lines in Korea, a Special Protection System(SPS) has been applied to stabilize the power systems by instantly tripping the pre-determined generators in a large-scaled power plant when a fault occurs on the drawing transmission lines. Moreover, power outputs of those generators are constrained to avoid any activation of Under Frequency Load Shedding(UFLS) even after those generators are tripped by SPS action. For this, this paper proposes a method for calculating the required capacity of Energy Storage System(ESS) expected to relieve the operating constraints to generators using its fast response for controlling power system frequency. The proposed method uses the generator acceleration energy to derive the stable condition during the SPS action. In addition, its effectiveness is verified by the case studies adopting actual SPS operations in Korean power systems.

바이모달 트램의 후진주차보조 알고리즘 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on Developing Reverse Parking Assistant Algorithm for Hi-modal Tram)

  • The bi-modal tram is under development as a new public transportation. The features of the tram are an extended wheel base and its length. This features result in difficulties for drivers on maneuvering the tram. Therefore, the all wheel steering system is applied to the articulated vehicle. The AWS system enables the vehicle to steer all the rear wheels independently and improves its driving characteristics. However, the bi-modal tram has a problem to move backward in the limited place because of its geometric feature and the AWS system. Hence, the reverse parking assistant algorithm for articulated vehicle is developed to solve the problems of the reverse parking. Using the vehicle model which includes the reverse parking assistant algorithm, the dynamic analysis is performed for several parking cases. By the result of the analysis, the stability and validity of the reverse parking assistant algorithm is verified.

합성수지 소재 네트호스 시스템을 이용한 성토사면 녹화 보강에 대한 연구 (A Study on Vegetated Embankment Slope Reinforcement Using A Synthetic Resine Based Net-hose System)

  • This study investigates the application of a synthetic resine based net-hose system to sustain vegetated embankment slope reinforcement. The net-hose system is designated to improve water supply to the vegetation that can suffer the lack of water in case of extreme drying condition or rock slope where water supply is relatively insufficient to ensure the growth of vegetation. A series of laboratory tests were conducted to check the structural adequacy and effectiveness of net-hose system. The results indicated that the model slope equipped with net-hose system seemed to provide better water supply resulting in more vegetated areas and higher matric suction due to active water uptake capacity, which might be contributed to greater shear strength of slope surface. A limited numerical analysis was conducted to verify the effect of water uptake on vegetated root system that generally yields better slope stability.

열가소성 분말 코팅소재 제조 및 난연특성 연구 (A Study on the Preparation of Thermoplastic Powder Coating Material and Its Flame Retardancy)

  • The purpose of this study is application to flame retardant powder coating(FRPC) material consisting of ammonium polyphosphate(APP) and magnesium hydroxide($Mg(OH)_2$) as a halogen free flame retardant into thermoplastic resin(LDPE-g-MAH). For improvement of adhesion, LDPE-g-MAH was synthesized from low density polyethylene(LDPE) and maleic anhydride(MAH). The mechanical properties as melt flow index, pencil hardness, cross-hatch adhesion and impact resistance of FRPC were measured. Also, the limited oxygen index(LOI) values were measured 17.3vol%, 31.1vol% and 33.7vol% for LDPE-g-MAH, FRPC-3(APP 15wt%, $Mg(OH)_2$ 15wt%) and FRPC-5(APP 30 wt%), respectively. The thermo gravimetry/differential thermal analysis(TG/DTA) of FPRC-3 was observed endothermic peak at $340^{\circ}C$ and $450^{\circ}C$, it was confirmed predominant thermal stability though the wide temperature range by APP and $Mg(OH)_2$. It was showed V-0 grade for FRPC-3 and FRPC-4(APP 20wt%, $Mg(OH)_2$ 10wt%) that a char formation and drip suppressing effect, and combustion time reduced by UL94(vertical burning test). It was confirmed that flame retardancy was improved with the synergy effect because of char formation by APP and $Mg(OH)_2$.

  • In construction of high speed railway, the fan shape is limited to achieve reduction of required travel time and concrete railway which has structural stability and induces small maintenance cost with allowable ground settlement is recently applied. So construction of concrete railway on soft ground in which considerable ground settlement occurs increases and settlement management in soft ground section is required. Field monitoring on ground movement and integrated geotechnical information system which manages construction, design, and field monitoring data are essential for settlement management of concrete railway subgrade. Site investigation data are also required due to future repair work. Therefore in this study, integrated geotechnical information system for construction and maintenance of concrete railway is developed. The developed system consists of a database and an application program. The database contains site investigation, construction, design, and field monitoring data throughout a railway. Application program performs various functions on managing and utilizing information in the database with graphic visualization of output. And by providing integrating information with comprehensible visual displays, the applicability and effectiveness of the developed system for construction and maintenance management were confirmed.

  • The constraint conditions are the stator voltage and the stator current to operate the motor in the flux weakening region. The maximum current is limited by the inverter current rating and the machine thermal rating. Given DC link voltage to control the motor in the flux weakening the maximum voltage is determined by considering PWM strategy, dead time, voltage drop of the inverter switching device, and the margin of the voltage for current forcing. In this paper, the new method to determine the available maximum voltage is derived by the quantitative method and by considering the factors of the voltage drop. The proposed method to determine the maximum voltage is very useful to improve the stability of the motor system and to enlarge the speed operation region in the flux weakening operation. Therefore the utility of the maximum voltage is increased.
