  • Bamboo is seen as a low cost, lightweight, widely available and environmental-friendly material. In Vietnam, it also connects deeply to our culture. However, it wasn't seen as a viable material for large structures before VTN Architects. Furthermore, Vietnamese cities are facing the same environmental problems as many developing metropolises in the world. Globally, climate change is a serious issue. The need for sustainable construction material is clear. The increasing development of eco-tourism in Vietnam and Asia is also a background. These become the background to the foundation and the development of bamboo architecture by VTN Architects. The journal analyses our development of bamboo construction, joints, structures, and how to use them to realise space and to create eco-friendly architecture. We will talk about our process of bamboo procurement, our construction methods, our unique joint system, how we make a frame unit and how we construct VTN bamboo structures from units.

  • The effective mixture of structural laminated timber and other materials is expected to extend the potentials of building structures because of the potentials to realize high performance in structural safety. The classical joint types using drift pin and bolts are occurred local failures due to the small bearing area. In result, new joints using H shaped steel were suggested in this research. The objective of this study is to evaluate elasto-plastic behaviors by strengthening types of wood frames with new joints connecting structural laminated timber with H shaped steel. A total of five specimens of about one-second scale were tested. Specimens had columns with 1,050 height and $84mm{\times}100mm$ section, and a beams with 1,950mm length and $130mm{\times}100mm$ section. Also, the specimens were stiffened by brace, hwang-toh brick, and autoclaved lightweight concrete. The results of the test showed that the specimen stiffened with autoclaved lightweight concrete was characterized by fairly good strength and stiffness than those of the other specimens. Initial stiffness of H-2.0D-NS specimen with 2 times inserting length of beam height showed 1.33 times than that of H-1.5D-NS specimen. However, the strength of H-2.0D-NS specimen has not improved too much than H-1.5D-NS specimen.

  • In this paper, we evaluate structural integrity of the wearable robot by using finite element analysis, which is made of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) composite materials to be lightened. On the basis of the ASTM(American Standard Test Method), mechanical tests of the material are carried out in tensile, compressive and shear test for analytical evaluation. With the tested composite material, the main frame and two femoral frames of the robot is redesigned to satisfy the lightening design requirements. It is verified with the structural analysis that the redesigned frames are good for the part of the wearable robot.

  • In the present study, exterior beam-column sub-assemblage from a regular reinforced concrete (RC) building has been considered. Two different types of beam-column sub-assemblages from existing RC building have been considered, i.e., gravity load designed ('GLD'), and seismically designed but without any ductile detailing ('NonDuctile'). Hence, both the cases represent the under-designed structure at different time frame span before the introduction of ductile detailing. For designing 'NonDuctile' structure, Eurocode and Indian Standard were considered. Non-linear finite element (FE) program has been employed for analysing the sub-assemblages under cyclic loading. FE models were developed using quadratic concrete brick elements with embedded truss elements to represent reinforcements. It has been found that the results obtained from the numerical analysis are well corroborated with that of experimental results. Using the validated numerical models, it was proposed to correlate the energy dissipation from numerical analysis to that from experimental analysis. Numerical models would be helpful in practice to evaluate the seismic performance of the critical sub-assemblages prior to design decisions. Further, using the numerical studies, performance of the sub-assemblages with variation of axial load ratios (ratio is defined by applied axial load divided by axial strength) has been studied since many researchers have brought out inconsistent observations on role of axial load in changing strength and energy dissipation under cyclic load.

  • The widlass base frame which is currently used is designed by lots of volume and costs so as to obtain high rigidity in spite of the greatly external load. The purpose of this research is to draw conceptual design of optimal design which can satisfy high rigidity existing windlass base frame has and lessening the body at the same time. Therefore, it progressed conceptual design by applying Topology optimization and Size optimization based on the finite-element analysis for the early model and indicated the result by comparing the early model with optimized model. As the result of Topology optimization, its stress was increased by about 6MPa and weight was decreased by about 560kg in comparison with the early model. In addition, in case of Size optimization, its stress was increased by about 7MPa and weight was decreased by about 1,560kg in comparison with the early model.

  • Carbody of rolling stock has been gradually changed as whole wood, steel frame with wood car body, whole steel car body with rivet and whole monocoque carbody with welding. And also mild steel has been used widely to material of structure, but usage of stainless and aluminium which have lightweight and high corrosion resistance is being increased lately. Structure is being commercialized to AED(All Extrusion Design),whole double skin with hollow excluded shape such as aluminium structure from SSD(Sheet Stringer Design), single skin consists of traditional frame and outside plat. Traditional aluminium carbody had many problems from reduced strength in welding combination section because car body is consist of small extruded material affected heat by welding. On this study, we proposed the plan to improve the body strength and quality with large-scale aluminium extruded material by minimizing welding concentration in combination section.

  • In order to set up a steel frame at every construction site, it is necessary to attach a shackle to a crane to move steel frame beams and columns(H beams). The shackle used for this purpose must be removed manually from a higher place, which causes the risk of safety accidents to increase, work efficiency to decrease, and construction costs to rise. In this study, micro-mini, super lightweight, lower power consumptive, and cheaper auto-shackle with two-way RF communication, which can be used practically at construction site is designed and developed. The developed auto-shackle is able to have excellent remote monitoring and controlling functions, by adopting new operating principles and structures different from the existing one. The results of the study reveal that the auto-shackle can be applied for the purpose of remote controlling of various construction equipments and speed up the advancement of construction equipments.

  • The chassis of the Korean light tactical vehicle adopts a frame-on-body structure that uses lightweight design technology in terms of equipment operating characteristics. Military vehicles are operated in much harsher conditions compared to civilian vehicles, including mountainous terrain, especially steep slopes. Due to this characteristic, frame-welded cracks were found on some military vehicles. Therefore, in this paper, road damage analysis was conducted by identifying various roads including the military unit's road. The result confirmed that the operating environment of some military units' tactical road was much harsher than the endurance road test condition. A solution was derived through defect analysis, design review, and actual vehicle driving test. This study can be used as a reference by suggesting the development direction for the durability test of a new vehicle.

  • The use of composites is increasing for lightweight aerospace structures. Among these structures, the ring frame and the parts of the projectile body are mainly made of a fiber reinforced composite material which is less susceptible such as delamination to structural damage. As the use of fiber reinforced composites increases, interest in modeling efficient methods of stiffness and strength is increasing. This paper predict the mechanical strength according to the repeating unit cell(RUC) of the 2-D triaxial braided composites of fiber reinforced composites. Yarn slice definition, incremental approach and stiffness reduction model were used as strength prediction. Finally, the results of strength prediction are verified by comparing with experimental data of 2-D triaxial braided composites specimens.

  • Recently, the expansion of the domestic solar market due to the promotion of eco-friendly and alternative energy-related policies is promising, and it is expected to lead the high-efficiency/high-power module market based on M10 or larger cells to reduce LCOE, 540-560W, M12 based on M10 cells Compared to the existing technology with an output of 650-700W based on cells, it is necessary to secure competitiveness through the development of modules with 600W based on M10 cells and 750W based on M12 cells. For the development of high efficiency/high-power n-type bifacial, it is necessary to secure a lightweight technology and structure due to the increase in weight of the glass to glass module according to the large area of the module. Since the mechanical strength characteristics according to the large area and high weight of the module are very important, design values such as a frame of a new structure that can withstand the mechanical load of the Mechanical Load Test and the location of the mounting hole are required. In this study, a structural analysis design model was introduced to secure mechanical reliability according to the enlargement of the module area, and the design model was verified through the mechanical load test of the actual product. It can be used as a design model to secure the mechanical reliability required for PV modules by variables such as module area, frame shape, and the location and quantity of mounting holes of the structural analysis model verified. A relationship of output drop can be obtained.
