Assessment of Lightning Arrester Location in Combined Transmission Line Connected whth Overhead Line and Underground Cable (가공송전선로와 지중송전선로가 연계된 혼합송전선로에서 피뢰기 적정위치 검토 및 평가)

  • This paper describes the assessment of proper location of lightning arrester in combined transmission line which is connected with overhead line and underground cable. The modeling for simulation is established using the actual system in ATP Draw and EMTP. Simulation is carried out to find out the best point to install the arrester in given the model system. And also voltage and current is analyzed on cable covering protection unit(CCPU). The simulation result demonstrated the best location of arrester in the given transmission line through the detailed analysis and its assessment.

  • This paper analyses the characteristic of temperature and energy of oil field cable in transient state such as lightning surge. For analysis in various conditions, many actual underground power cable systems are modeled using ATP These results are applied for the examination of temperature increase when the hitting of lightning surge are occurred. The inner part temperature of OF cable is analysed according to the various kinds of cable using the thermal model of transient state. The temperature increase of sheath and crossbonded lead by fault current is also analysed using IEC 60949.

  • 154kV insulator strings are frequently damaged by lightning strokes, overvoltage and contamination. And this insulator damage inflicts a loss on the power company. The purpose of this paper is to develop the arcing horn as a protective device of 154kV insulator strings against lightning flashover and overvoltages. So We have developed the arcing horn which is suitable for 154kV transmission line and estimated the performance of arcing horn by high current arcs and high voltage tests.

  • This paper presents the experimental results on breakdown characteristics in $N_2$ gas under non-uniform electric fields caused by both the positive and negative lightning impulse voltages. $N_2$ gas have an advantage of eco-friendly and cost reduction, and safety aspects. In order to analyze the impulse pre-breakdown processes in $N_2$ gas, we carried out measurements and observations of the impulse breakdown voltages, pre-breakdown current and luminous signals. They were measured by a voltage divider, a shunt and a photo-multiplier tube, respectively. Additionally, the characteristics of discharge channels were observed by high speed cameras. The breakdown voltages in the positive polarity was lower than those in the negative polarity.

  • This paper reviews the characteristic of thermal and temperature of oil field cable in transient state such as grounding fault and lightning surge.   • This paper is to demonstrate the effectiveness of one point grounding in support of ESS protection. One point grounding provides for the dispatching of excess energy for protection of switching equipment and personnel from lightning discharge hazards and for a natural sink for noise from atmospheric lightning and power transients. In most ESS installations there are a number of different items that must be maintained at a common ground potential for safety, fault protection or noise reduction. The items typically consist of power systems, heating and ventilating systems, distributing frames, repeating equipmets, switching equipments, etc. Grounding system of an ESS Office is most effective when all the ground points are connected to a single, common earth. The one point grounding prvides a common reference potential, keeping all the items of telecommunications facility free from the earth current and voltage hazards.

  • The simulation study of lightning faults reducing effects by the installation of surge arresters on the 154 kV transmission line is stated here. For the purpose of detailed simulation of arcing horn, a flashover model with dynamic characteristics of arcing horn gap was represented as a non-linear inductance which is controlled by EMTP/TACS(Electromagnetic Transient Program/fransient Analysis of Control Systems) switches. The back flashover inducing current was increased from 50 kA to 88 kA by the installation of surge arresters on the transmission line which has one ground wire and 20 ohms of tower footing resistances. The great advantage of surge arrester installation on one circuit of the double circuit transmission line is to prevent the simultaneous back flashover up to 190 kA.

  • Impulse breakdown voltage characteristics of sulphur-hexafluoride/nitrogen ($SF_{6}-N_{2}$) mixtures were presented. The applied voltages were the positive and negative lightning impulse (1.2/44${\mu}s$) and oscillating impulse ($0.4{\mu}s$/2.08MHz) voltages. The predischarge current was observed to clarify the breakdown mechanism. The electrode system was consisted of plane to plane configuration with a needle-shaped protrusion whose length and diameter are 10mm and 1mm. The measurements were carried out at the gas pressure of mixtures up to 0.5MPa with nitrogen concentrations varying from 5 to 20%. The electrical breakdown in $SF_{6}-N_{2}$ mixtures develops with steplike pulses in leader mechanism. The minimum breakdown voltages for the negative lightning and oscillating impulse voltages were higher than those for the positive.

  • This paper proposes an insulation coordination and surge arrester design for superconducting power system with SFCL(Superconducting Fault Current Limiter) in Icheon substation. In the aspect of the economic analysis, since the superconducting devices are very expensive, the insulation coordination to prevent the dielectric breakdown caused by the lightning surge should be considered carefully. In this paper, the insulation coordination for real grid including SFCL and the design of the protection devices against lightning surge is verified using PSCAD/EM TDC.

  • Selection and application recommendations of lightning arresters for DC electric traction vehicles are presented. To decide arrester specification such as continuous operating voltage(COV, $U_c$), rated voltage($U_R$), and nominal discharge current($I_n$), variations of system voltage and surge currents flowing arresters were analyzed in running-service of traction vehicles. System voltages increased up to 1,800V during anti-breaking. Surge currents recorded 3 times per running-service-route and their magnitudes were ranges of $150A{\sim}2kA$. From the field measurement and consideration of EN50163, COV, $U_c$, and $U_R$ for the $1,500V_{DC}$ traction vehicles were proposed.
