In this work, in order to investigate the effect of lightning impulse currents on ZnO surge arrester. and the deterioration characteristics of ZnO surge arrester, 8/20 [${\mu}s$], 2.5 [kA] impulse currents were applied to the ZnO surge arrester under test. The leakage currents of ZnO surge arrester were measured and ZnO element was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As a result, the resistive leakage current of ZnO surge arrester was increased with the injection number of lightning impulse currents.
Grounding impedance depends on the frequency of current flowing into a grounding system. Especially, the lightning gives a broad frequency spectrum from low frequency up to 1 MHz. So the grounding impedance related to high frequency current like lightning should be measured with high frequency source. In this paper, we described the grounding impedances of deeply-driven ground rods of 10 ${\sim}$ 48 m long with respect to the frequency of injected currents and the feed point. For the experiments, we used the wideband power amplifier which can produce sinusoidal voltages with the frequency ranges of DC ${\sim}$ 250 MHz. As a result, the longer the ground rod is, the lower the ground resistance is. However the grounding impedance of deeply-driven ground rod in the range of higher frequency is significantly increased. As a consequence, it is important to evaluate the high frequency performance of grounding systems for lightning protection.
This paper describes the fault reducing effects of the 154 kV transmission tower by auxiliary grounding from the top of the tower to ground. The grounding surge impedance of the auxiliary grounding system is calculated by CDEGS(:Current Distribution Electromagnetic Interference Grounding and Soil Structure Analysis), and the critical lightning back flashover current and arcing horn dynamic characteristics are simulated by EMTP/TACS(:Electromagnetic Transient Program/Transient Analysis of Control Systems). The calculated results of total LFOR(Lightning Flashover Rate) shows that the LFOR can be reduced from 5.2(count/100km. year) to 3.4 by auxiliary grounding on the 154 kV transmission tower with one ground wire shielding system.
In this paper, the safety for passengers of composite car-body against lightning strikes was analyzed by the application of an impulse generator which can produce impulse current up to 50 [kA] with 8/20 [us] waveform. Potential difference on inside surface of the car-body was measured as a safety parameter for the passengers against lightning strikes. The potential difference between 20 [cm] distant was 175 [V] at 37.67 [kA], and it corresponded to 875 [V] between 1 [m] distant. The amount of charge flowing a passenger at 100 [kA] impulse current can be estimated to 0.31 [mA s]. This is much less than the limit amount of charge for human body, 30 [mA s] which is presented by Koeppen and Osypka.

The metal oxide varistor (MOV) is a major component of the surge protection devices (SPDs) currently in use. The device is judged to be faulty when fatigue caused by the continuous inflow of lightning accumulates and reaches the damage limit. In many cases, induced lightning resulting from lightning strikes flows in to the device several times per second in succession. Therefore, the frequency or the rate at which the SPD is actually exposed to stress, called a surge, is outside the range of human perception. For this reason, the protective device should be replaced if it actually approaches the end of its life even though it is not faulty at present, currently no basis exists for making the judgment of remaining lifetime. Up to now, the life of an MOV has been predicted solely based on the number of inflow surges, irrespective of the magnitude of the surge current or the amount of energy that has flowed through the device. In this study, nonlinear data that shows the damage to an MOV depending on the count of surge and the amount of input current were collected through a high-voltage test. Then, a failure prediction algorithm was proposed by preparing a look-up table using the results of the test. The proposed method was experimentally verified using an impulse surge generator
This paper studies the validity about a joint operation of neutral wire and overhead grounding wire in combined distribution systems. The overhead grounding wire and neutral wire are currently installed separately and grounded by common. However there is no any ineffectiveness or electrical problem in case of the proposed system, such system can be operated at real distribution system. Therefore this paper describes the suitability of a joint operation through lightning surge analysis on combined distribution systems. Lightning surge analysis is carried out by EMTP/ATPDraw to obtain the overvoltage of overhead line and underground cable in various conditions such as locations and current types of lightning stroke. Overvoltage gained by the analysis show that the insulation strength of the joint operation case is not stable compare with the current operation case.
Grounding is the art of making an electrical connection to the earth. In order to protect man, electrical and/or electric equipments from the lightning strokes, all the energy of lightning strokes must be diverted via a safe path to earth. It is essential to the transient grounding resistance against lightning strokes. In this paper, measurements and analyses of grounding surge impedance have been investigated. For measurements of grounding surge impedance the pulse generator was designed and fabricated. The pulse generator has rise time of 22.4 ns and pulse duration of $8\;{\mu}s$. The transient grounding resistance has been measuring by injecting low power and step current between the earthing system under test and a remote reference earth and measuring the potential rise caused by this current. As a result, the transient grounding resistance against lightning surge in the short time domain is much higher than steady state grounding resistance.
Grounding impedance depends on the frequency of current flowing into a grounding system lightning in particular has a broad frequency spectrum from some tens of Hz to a few MHz. So the grounding impedance related to transient currents such as lightning should be measured. In this paper, the grounding impedances of vertically-driven ground rods of 10, 30 and 48[m] long are measured and analyzed as functions of the frequency of injected current and the feeding point. As a result, the longer the ground rod is, the lower the steady-state ground resistance is. However the grounding impedance of a vertically-driven ground rod at a high frequency is significantly increased. It is not always true that low grounding impedance follows from a low steady-state ground resistance. It is important to evaluate the high frequency performance of grounding systems for protection against lightning.
There are claims that ESE(Early streamer emission) Air terminals offer a vastly increased zone of protection over that of traditional lightning rods by causing the emission of an upward streamer/leader that will propagate towards the tip of downward leader at an early stage in the attachment process than would occur for a simple rod in the same geometrical configurations. This paper shows the results of comparing test a particular type of ESE air terminals with a simple rod conducted in the KEH HV laboratory, which are lightning impulse voltage test, flashover direction test and corona emission current measurement. The results from this test show a completely random scattering of flashovers to the conventional and ESE air terminals under identical electrics] and geometrical conditions, and thus shows no advantage of one terminal over the other.
