Optofluidic packaging and patterning technologies for light emitting devices

  • We demonstrate conformal phosphor coating and patterning methods on light emitting diodes (LEDs) using image processing based optofluidic maskless lithography (IP-OFML) system in microfluidic channels. IP-OFML allows a real-time detection and dynamic mask generation for packaging of randomly dispersed microchips. Our system detects each chip by considering rotation of the chip through image processing regardless of their arrangement error. Therefore, it precisely packages the chip making conformal polymer layer.

  • Improvement studies of existing phosphors are needed for use in light emitting diodes (LEDs). Among the phosphors discovered recently, the SLA ($SrLiAl_3N_4:Eu^{2+}$) is a phosphor that has a narrow width. It is now known as a good red phosphor that meets the industry's needs for warm white (color temperature ranging from 2700 to 4000 K) and high CRI (> 80). However, SLA phosphors are obtained from difficult synthetic methods. All commercially available phosphors should be derived from the general solid state synthesis method. The phosphors produced by difficult synthetic methods will inevitably fall out of price competitiveness and will be scrapped. This study succeeded in synthesizing SLA ($SrLiAl_3N_4:Eu^{2+}$) phosphors by using a general solid phase synthesis method based on the reaction energy obtained from DFT calculations. As a result, we found an optimal solid state synthesis method for SLA phosphors.

Effect of Globe Growth and Chromogenic on Day and Night Temperature and the LED Light Treatment of Expert Grafted Cactus (Chamecereus silvestrii f. variegata) Cultivar 'Hee-Mang' (수출 접목선인장 산취 '희망'의 주.야 온도 및 LED광 처리가 모구 생육과 발색에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to find the day and night temperature combination and the light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on the most effective globe coloration and growth of Chamecereus silvestrii f. variegata 'Hee-Mang'. The $L^*$value, $a^*$value and $b^*$value were all significant difference in the yellow globe color expression in the day and night temperature combination. Especially, the bright yellow color and visual value were the highest in the temperature combination, the day temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ and night temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. Globe color quality was lowered from the day temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ and night temperatures of $5^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$ combination. In light-emitting diodes (LEDs) treatments, $a^*$value and $b^*$value are significant difference. A unique beautiful yellow coloration and globe quality were maintained the $a^*$value of +5.23, $b^*$value of +39.9 in a red LED. The optimum temperature range and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on the globe color expression were the most effective the day temperature of 200e and night temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ and a red LED. In addition, the outer globe color quality of Chamecereus silvestrii f. variegata cultivation, rather than the light environment improvement is better in a proper temperature environment to keep. Especially, a unique globe color expression of yellow lines was most effective in a red LED.

  • InGaN/GaN LEDs는 1993년에 처음 소개 된 이래로, 성장, 제품 면에서 끊임없는 발전을 이루어 왔다. 따라서 GaN 기반의 LED는 조명, 디스플레이 그리고 후광 발광판 등 다양한 분야에서 사용되고 있다. 현재 GaN 기반의 LED는 낮은 작동전류에서 높은 내부, 외부 효율을 보인다고 알려져 있다. 그러나 LED는 보통 높은 작동 전류에서 사용하고 있는데 이 전류 값에서 'Efficiency Droop'이라 하는 효율 저하가 나타난다. 이 현상의 원인으로는 결함, Auger 영향, 캐리어 누설, 격자 불일치로 인한 내부 장 효과, 그리고 온도의 영향 등이 이 효율저하를 일으키는 주된 원인으로 생각되고 있다. 하지만 최근 효율저하의 원인에 대하여 결함, 그리고 온도 변화의 실험 등을 통하여 실험적으로 Auger 영향은 효율 저하의 원인으로 가능성이 매우 낮고 누설 전류가 효율저하의 주된 원인의 가능성이 높다고 많은 그룹에서 문제제기를 하고 있는 추세이다. 이 연구에서, 효율저하의 특성을 분석하기 위하여 GaN 기반의 EBL이 있는 LED와 없는 LED를 이용하였다. I-V 곡선, 주입 전류에 따른 반치폭의 변화와 스펙트럼의 변화, 그리고 외부 효율 등의 비교 분석을 통하여 효율 저하의 원인이 누설 전류에 의함이라고 분석을 할 수 있었다.

Study on Compound Humidifier Employing UV-LED using Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (환경전과정평가에 기반한 UV-LED 를 사용한 복합식 가습기에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we assessed environmental impacts of compound humidifiers using environmental life cycle assessment and presented the ways to improvements in energy consumption of them. We found eco-design parameters and $CO_2$-eq emissions in each stage of raw material acquisition, manufacturing, transportation, use and disuse in life cycle of the compound humidifiers. The highest $CO_2$ emission is found to be in the stage of use among all stages of life cycle, which is mainly due to power consumption in thermal heating of heating coil for sterilization during humidification. The power consumption and $CO_2$ emission in the stage of use can be reduced to 1/4 and 1/3 at the highest estimate through improvement of sterilization method, respectively. We suggested the replacement of conventional thermal heating coil by ultra violet light-emitting diodes (UV-LED) for sterilization and then presented the experimental results on the sterilization effects of UV-LEDs.

Two Cases of Pressure Ulcer Patients Treated with Acupuncture and Light Emitting Diode Light Therapy (침치료와 Light Enitting Diode 광선치료를 병행한 욕창 치료 2례)

  • Objectives : We report two cases of pressure ulcer patients to show the efficacy of treatment with acupuncture and Light Enitting Diode(LED) light therapy. Methods : We treated two pressure ulcer patients with acupuncture, LED light therapy, herbal medication and with a simple dressing. LED light with up to $4J/cm^2$ of energy irradiated the pressure ulcer site once a day for fifteen minutes. All patients received acupuncture treatment and simple dressing for wound care. We measured phase change of the pressure ulcer in terms of ulcer size, The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel(NPUAP) stage and with the The Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing(PUSH) tool(3.0). Results & Conclusions : In each of the two cases, pressure ulcer size and total score of the PUSH tool decreased and NPUAP stage was improved from II to I. This shows that acupuncture treatment and LED light therapy may have a considerable effect in healing on the pressure ulcer.

Visible Wavelength Photonic Insulator for Enhancing LED Light Emission

  • We report design and simulation of a two-dimensional (2D) silicon-based nanophotonic crystal as an optical insulator to enhance the light emission efficiency of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The device was designed in a manner that a triangular array silicon photonic crystal light insulator has a square trench in the middle where LED can be placed. By varying the normalized radius in the range of 0.3-0.5 using plane wave expansion method (PWEM), we found that the normalized radius of 0.45 creates a large band gap for transverse electric (TE) polarization. Subsequently a series of light propagation simulation were carried out using 2D and three-dimensional (3D) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD). The designed silicon-based light insulator device shows optical characteristics of a region in which light propagation was forbidden in the horizontal plane for TE light with most of the visible light spectrum in the wavelength range of 450 nm to 600 nm.

  • The objective of this study was to elucidate the effect of light-emitting diode treatment on early growth and inorganic elements in leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. 'Oak Leaf'). In changes to leaf morphology, shoot elongation and hypocotyl length showed poor growth under red light irradiation, while red+blue light irradiation induced shorter plant height and more leaves, resulting in increased fresh weight. With respect to Hunter's color and SPAD values, lettuce seedlings grown under red+ blue and fluorescent light irradiation had a higher $a^*$ value but showed no other changes to SPAD values. Interestingly, redness in relative chlorophyll content was 1.4 times higher under red+blue light irradiation. Inorganic element (N, Ca, Mg, and Fe) and ascorbic acid concentrations increased in lettuce plants grown under LED light irradiation compared to those of lettuce grown under fluorescent light, which showed a higher P content. In conclusion, red+blue light irradiation, which stimulates growth and higher nutrient uptake in leaf lettuce, could be employed in containers equipped with LEDs.

Flicker Prevention Through Transition-Frequency Modulation in Visible Light Communication (가시광통신에서 천이주파수 변조를 이용한 플리커 방지)

  • In this study, we applied transition-frequency modulation to prevent the flickering of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in visible light communication (VLC). In the VLC transmitter, rectangular waveforms with transition frequencies of four and two in each bit time were used for the high and low bits, respectively, in the non-return-to-zero data. In the VLC receiver, an RC-high-pass filter (HPF) was used to eliminate the interference of the 120 Hz noise light from the adjacent lighting lamps, and an SR-latch circuit was used to recover the transmitted signal using spikes from the output of the RC-HPF. This configuration is useful for constructing VLC systems that are flicker-free and resistant to adjacent noise light interference.

Effect of Red and Infrared LED Light Therapy on Allergic Rhinitis (알레르기 비염 환자에서 적색 및 근적외선 LED 광선 치료 효과)

  • As a non-invasive method for alleviating allergic rhinitis, there has been a recent ongoing research in the treatment of light from light emitting diodes (LEDs) and lasers. A total of 15 subjects diagnosed with allergic rhinitis were selected for this study. Red and near infrared light emitted from LEDs with wavelengths of 660nm and 940nm were illuminated three times daily (three minutes per cycle) for a total of two weeks. The degree of nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing and nasal itching was evaluated by questionnaires before and after the test. Also, the serum IgE (Immunoglobulin E) was measured and compared before and after the test. As a result, the total score of symptoms of allergic rhinitis was decreased by 67% after the test (P<0.01). The level of IgE was decreased by 17% after the test (P<0.05). In conclusion, the non-invasive LED phototherapy method using red and near-infrared LED light was effective in alleviating symptoms of allergic rhinitis. There were no adverse effects or complications reported during and after the test.
