  • In this paper we study the problem of implementation of security issues of blue tooth, especially secure simple pairing, with the help of an efficient four user authenticated key (4UAK) for an elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). This paper also deals with the design, implement and performance evaluation of secure simple pairing (SSP) using an elliptic curve cryptography, such as Diffie Hellman protocol when four users are involved. Here, we also compute the best, worst and average case step counts (time complexities). This work puts forth an efficient way of providing security in blue tooth. The time complexity of O(n4) is achieved using Rabin Miller Primality methodology. The method also reduces the calculation price and light communication loads.

  • Photoelastic isochromatic fringes related to the difference of principal stresses have some bandwidth whose light intensities are not constant and asymmetrical in experimental images. Hence, it is difficult to measure fringe order accurately at a data point by visual observation. In this study, a method of fringe sharpening, which can extract shapened lines from both full-and half-order fringes by digital image processing, is developed. To test the method, various simple photelastic fringe patterns are simulated and their images are processed to yield sharpened lines. The method is then applied to general problems such as images of a circular disk compressed by diametrically concentrated loads and a circular cylinder sybject to internal pressure. The procedure is proved to be capable of extracting sharpened lines accurately from photoelastic isochromatic fringes.

  • This research investigates the application of novel functionally graded small-scale materials (FGSMs) in sport and sports structures through an engineering design lens. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) offer tailored material properties, promising enhanced performance and durability. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, this study explores the integration of FGSMs in sports equipment and infrastructure. Design considerations specific to sports engineering are emphasized, including lightweight, high-strength materials capable of withstanding dynamic loads. Advanced manufacturing techniques, such as additive manufacturing and nanotechnology, enable precise control over material composition and microstructure. Computational modeling is employed to evaluate the mechanical behavior and performance characteristics of FGSM-based components. Through case studies and comparative analyses, the study showcases the potential of FGSMs to revolutionize sports equipment and structures, offering improved performance, safety, and sustainability.   • This paper presents optimization of a long-span portal steel frame under dynamic wind loads using a surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithm. Long-span portal steel frames are often used in low-rise industrial and commercial buildings. The structure needs be able to resist the wind loads, and at the same time it should be as light as possible in order to be cost-effective. In this work, numerical model of a portal steel frame is constructed using structural analysis program (SAP2000), with the web-heights at five locations of I-sections of the columns and rafters as the decision variables. In order to evaluate the performance of a given design under dynamic wind loading, the equivalent static wind load (ESWL) is obtained from a database of wind pressures measured in wind tunnel tests. A modified formulation of the problem compared to the one available in the literature is also presented, considering additional design constraints for practicality. Evolutionary algorithms (EA) are often used to solve such non-linear, black-box problems, but when each design evaluation is computationally expensive (e.g., in this case a SAP2000 simulation), the time taken for optimization using EAs becomes untenable. To overcome this challenge, we employ a surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithm (SAEA) to expedite the convergence towards the optimum design. The presented SAEA uses multiple spatially distributed surrogate models to approximate the simulations more accurately in lieu of commonly used single global surrogate models. Through rigorous numerical experiments, improvements in results and time savings obtained using SAEA over EA are demonstrated.

Near-ground wind and its characterization for engineering applications

  • This report presents the findings of a one-year monitoring effort to empirically characterize and evaluate the nature of near-ground winds for structural engineering purposes. The current wind engineering practice in the United States does not explicitly consider certain important near-ground wind characteristics in typical rough terrain conditions and the possible effect on efficient design of low-rise structures, such as homes and other light-frame buildings that comprise most of the building population. Therefore, near ground wind data was collected for the purpose of comparing actual near-ground wind characteristics to the current U.S. wind engineering practice. The study provides data depicting variability of wind speeds, wind velocity profiles for a major thunderstorm event and a northeaster, and the influence of thunderstorms on annual extreme wind speeds at various heights above ground in a typical rough environment. Data showing the decrease in the power law exponent with increasing wind speed is also presented. It is demonstrated that near-ground wind speeds (i.e., less than 10 m above ground) are likely to be over-estimated in the current design practice by as much as 20 percent which may result in wind load over-estimate of about 50% for low-rise buildings in typical rough terrain. The importance of thunderstorm wind profiles on determination of design wind speeds and building loads (particularly for buildings substantially taller than 10 m) is also discussed. Recommendations are given for possible improvements to the current design practice in the United States with respect to low-rise buildings in rough terrain and for the need to study the impact of thunderstorm gust profile shapes on extreme value wind speed estimates and building loads.

  • Because of the high specific stiffness and strength inherent in the sandwich structure composed of facesheet that resists in-plane loads and a core that resists out-of-plane loads, it is often used for large and light-weighted structures. However, inevitably the increased flexibility allows greater deformation-based disturbances in the structures. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the structural safety. To obtain more accurate analytical results, the input disturbances must more closely simulate real load conditions; to improve accuracy, non-linear elements such as gust effects were considered. In addition, the structural safety was analyzed for the iso-grid sandwich panel structure using fluid-structure interactions. For a more realistic simulation, flow velocity fields, which consider the effects of irregular gust fluctuation, were generated and the coupled field was analyzed by mapping the pressure and displacement.

Fatigue Capacity of Concrete Beams Prestressed with Partially Bonded CFRP Tendons (CFRP 긴장재로 긴장된 부분비부착 콘크리트 보의 피로 성능)

  • CFRP tendons have been attempted in concrete structures as a substitute for steel tendons considering their many advantages such as the corrosion-resistance, light weight etc. However, the elastic behavior up to failure is likely to result in ductility problems. To overcome such problems, prestress concrete beams with partially bonded tendons have been developed and suggested. In this new system, the un-bonded part near the mid-span contributes to the improvement of ductility. And the bonded parts at both ends play a role as a safe anchorage. According to the previous research on the static behavior, the suggested method has demonstrated enough ductility and strength. However it is essential to verify the long-term safety for repetitive fatigue loads under service states. For this purpose, flexural fatigue loading tests were carried out in this research. This paper includes an experimental investigation on the static load-carrying capacities of the beams with or without fatigue tests. The results showed that the beams prestressed with partially bonded CFRP tendons possessed good fatigue capacity under the constant cyclic loads.

  • Recently, the use of DC power increased due to the increased use of digital load. Power factor of input current decrease and input current harmonics increase, and conversion loss which is occurred in the AC / DC converter is a problem to provide the proper DC voltage to the device equipped with an internal AC / DC converter. Hybrid system supplies the AC power and DC power to AC load (motor load and the transformer load) and DC loads (computers, TV, LED fluorescent light) at the same time it supplies the renewable energy and utility energy taken power from Utility to user for improving the efficiency and renewable energy improvements in ease of use. This paper studies DC characteristics of traditional AC load for Hybrid distributions.

A Study of the Mitigating Effect Comparison of Voltage Sags by WTG Types Based on the Concept of Area of Vulnerability (타입별 풍력 발전기 설치에 따른 민감 부하의 순간전압강하 저감 효과 비교 분석 연구)

  • In modern society, the number of industrial customers using equipment sensitive particularly to voltage sags is rapidly increasing. As voltage sags can cause loss of information as well as false operation of the control device, it results in the vast economic damage in industrial processes. One way to mitigate voltage sags in the sensitive loads is the installation of distributed generation (DGs) on the periphery of these loads. In addition, renewable energy sources are currently in the spot light as the potential solution for the energy crisis and environmental issues. In particular, wind power generation which is connected to a grid is rising rapidly because it is energy efficient and also economically feasible compared to other renewable energy sources. On the basis of the above information, in this paper, with Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) installed nearby the sensitive load, the analysis of the mitigating effect comparison by types of WTGs is performed using voltage sag assessment on the IEEE-30 bus test system. That is, the areas of vulnerability according to types of WTGs are expected to be different by how much reactive power is produced or consumed as WTG reactive power capability is related to the types of WTGs. Using the concept of 'Vulnerable area' with the failure rate for buses and lines, the annual number of voltage sags at the sensitive load with the installation of WTGs per type is studied. This research will be anticipated to be useful data when determining the interconnection of wind power generation in the power system with the consideration of voltage sags.

Seismic behavior of full-scale square concrete filled steel tubular columns under high and varied axial compressions

  • A building structural system of moment resisting frame (MRF) with concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) columns and wide flange H beams, is one of the most conveniently constructed structural systems. However, there were few studies on evaluating seismic performance of full-scale CFST columns under high axial compression. In addition, some existing famous design codes propose various limits of width-to-thickness ratio (B/t) for steel tubes of the ductile CFST composite members. This study was intended to investigate the seismic behavior of CFST columns under high axial load compression. Four full-scale square CFST column specimens with a B/t of 42 were carried out that were subjected to horizontal cyclic-reversal loads combined with constantly light, medium and high axial loads and with a linearly varied axial load, respectively. Test results revealed that shear strength and deformation capacity of the columns significantly decreased when the axial compression exceeded 0.35 times the nominal compression strength of a CFST column, P0. It was obvious that the higher the axial compression, the lower both the shear strength and deformation capacities were, and the earlier and faster the shear strength degradation occurred. It was found as well that higher axial compressions resulted in larger initial lateral stiffness and faster degradation of post-yield lateral stiffness. Meanwhile, the lower axial compressions led to better energy dissipation capacities with larger cumulative energy. Moreover, the study implied that under axial compressions greater than 0.35P0, the CFST column specimens with B/t limits recommended by AISC 360 (2016), ACI 318 (2014), AIJ (2008) and EC4 (2004) codes do not provide ultimate interstory drift ratio of more than 3% radian, and only the limit in ACI 318 (2014) code satisfies this requirement when axial compression does not exceed 0.35P0.
