  • In this paper, design of a variable inductor using MR Fluid Gap is proposed for wide load range efficiency improvement of a bidirectional DC-DC converter. As compared to conventional constant value inductor designed to have negative current for ZVS at heavy load but suffers high losses at light load due to its small inductance, the proposed variable inductor not only have small inductance at high current for ZVS but also it has large inductance at low current to decrease light load losses.

  • Induction motors often reach their maximum efficiency at the nominal load. In most applications, the machine load is not equal to the nominal load, thus reduces the motor efficiency and turns a greater percent of power into loss. In this paper, the induction motor control problem has been investigated to reduce the system losses. The Field Oriented Control method (FOC) has been employed in this paper. In this research, the mathematical equations related to system losses are calculated in relation to torque and speed, and then the q- and d-axis are summarized according to the current components. After that, the proposed method is applied along with d- and q-axis. In the recent three decades, many techniques have been suggested to improve the induction motor performance using smart and non-smart methods. In this paper, a new PSO-Fuzzy method have used in real time. The fuzzy logic method serves as speed controller in q-axis and PSO algorithm controls the optimum flux in d-axis. It will be proved that the use of this combined method will lead to a significant improvement in motor efficiency.

  • When an induction motor is lightly loaded, the efficiency can be very substantially improved by controlling the air gap flux. Thus in the system which requires constant speed under either normal load or light load, it is possible to save energy by means of controlling the air gap flux. In this paper, the required relationships between stator current and rotor slip frequency for optimal efficiency control is derived and the improved control loop is suggested.

  • This paper proposes a control methodology for a high efficiency operation of an inductive power transfer (IPT) converter by combining full bridge (FB) and half bridge (HB) controls. To apply the proposed control to the IPT converter, the characteristics of each control method are analyzed. By examining the output voltages of the IPT converter and a theoretical loss analysis, the control shifting points between FB and HB controls are evaluated in accordance with the coupling coefficients and the load. Based on the control shifting points, the FB-HB control algorithm is implemented. By applying FB-HB control, high efficiency operation at the light load condition can be achieved.

  • This study examines the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation of an active-clamped forward converter (ACFC) with a current-doubler rectifier (CDR). The ZVS condition can be obtained with a much smaller leakage inductance compared to that of a conventional ACFC. Due to the significantly reduced leakage inductance, the design is optimized and the circulating loss is reduced. The operation of the ACFC with a CDR is analyzed, and a detailed ZVS analysis is conducted on the basis of a steady-state analysis. From the results, a design consideration for ZVS improvement is presented. Loss analyses of the converters shows that enhanced soft-switching contributes to an efficiency improvement under light-load condition. Experimental results from a 100-W (5-V/20-A) prototype verify that the ACFC with a CDR can attain ZVS across an extended load range of loads and achieve a higher efficiency than conventional ACFCs.

  • This paper presents an optimal efficiency control for the inverter fed induction machine system using neural network. The motor speed and the load torque vary the efficiency characteristics of an induction motor. The optimal slip frequency has nonlinearity varied by the load torque as well as the motor speed. The induction motor is driven using the inverter system and the indirect vector control method which input is slip frequency. The neural network for estimating the optimal slip frequency has two input layer(the motor speed and the load torque) and one output layer(the optimal slip frequency that minimize the input power). Learning algorithm of the neural network is the back-propagation. Using the equivalent circuit including the nonlinearity of the induction motor, the loss reduction is analyzed quantitatively. Experimental results are shown noticeable power savings by proposed scheme in high speed and light load conditions.

  • A new asymmetrical pulse width modulation (PWM) half bridge converter with improved ZVS performance is proposed. The ZVS operation of the proposed converter can be maintained from no load to full load conditions since the magnetizing current of the transformer contributes to the ZVS operation at light loads without considerable conduction loss of the transformer and switch. Synchronous rectification is employed to reduce the rectification loss. Operational principles, large signal modeling, ZVS analysis and design equations are presented. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed converter can achieve a large ZVS range and significant improvement in efficiency for a 100W (5V, 20A) prototype converter.

  • The superiority of gallium nitride FET (GaN FET) over silicon MOSFET is examined in this paper. One of the outstanding features of GaN FET is low reverse-recovery charge, which enables continuous conduction mode operation of totem-pole bridgeless boost power factor correction (PFC) circuit. Among many bridgeless topologies, totem-pole bridgeless shows high efficiency and low conducted electromagnetic interference performance, with low cost and simple control scheme. The operation principle, control scheme, and circuit implementation of the proposed topology are provided. The converter is driven in two-module interleaved topology to operate at a power level of 5.5 kW, whereas phase-shedding control is adopted for light load efficiency improvement. Negative bias circuit is used in gate drivers to avoid the shoot-through induced by high speed switching. The superiority of GaN FET is verified by constructing a 5.5 kW prototype of two-module interleaved totem-pole bridgeless boost PFC converter. The experiment results show the highest efficiency of 98.7% at 1.6 kW load and an efficiency of 97.7% at the rated load.

  • Many government in the world have conducted building energy performance certification program to reduce building energy consumption. In this study, a reference building and its HVAC system was modeled, and the energy load and consumption were estimated by the ECO2 program. The software is a simple building energy simulation program based on monthly calculated method. The building energy efficiency rating the the reference building was 1+ under baseline condition. The simulation results showed that the insulation performance slightly affected building energy load and consumption, but light density had a significant effect on them. The application of geothermal heat pumps gave improvement of building energy efficiency rating but it could not make it possible to get zero energy building(ZEB) certification. The ZEB 5 certification could be achieved by using photovoltaics, however getting better grade was difficult. The simulation results showed that the ZEB 4 certification, one grade higher than ZEB 5, could be attained by using more than one renewable energy source such as geothermal and solar energy in this study.
