The biological fixation of carbon dioxide using microalgae have many advantages over chemicals and remove carbon dioxide simultaneously. A ketocarotenoid astaxanthin is hyper-accumulated in the green freshwater microalga, Haematococcus pluvialis. In the present study, the combine effects of carbon dioxide concentration and light intensity on the growth of H. pluvilais were investigated. The carbon dioxide concentration above 10% caused a severe inhibition and around 5% is optimal for growth. Adaptation to high concentration of carbon dioxide enhanced the $CO_2$ tolerance. Specific growth rate calculated differently based upon cell number or dry weight because of the distinctive life cycle patterns of H. pluvialis : small-sized motile green cell and thick cell walled red cyst cell. Based on the light dependence of H. pluvialis, internally illuminated air-lift photobioreactor was designed and operated. Gradual increase of light supply gave more active growth and more effective productivity of astaxanthin than constant light supply.
Nitrogen-doped $TiO_2$ particles have been successfully prepared using titanium tetraisopropoxide as the Ti source and urea as the nitrogen source. As-prepared nitrogen-doped $TiO_2$ was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET) and ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis) absorption spectra techniques. Photocatalytic degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) has been carried out in both solar light (UV-vis) and the visible region (${\lambda}=420nm$). Nitrogen-doped $TiO_2$ exhibits higher activity than the commercial $TiO_2$ photocalyst, particularly under visible-light irradiation because bandgap of nitrogen-doped $TiO_2$ becomes remarkably decreased.
The OPAL (Open Pool Australian Light-water) reactor is currently being constructed to replace HIFAR (HI-Flux Australian Reactor, commissioned in 1958) in mid-2006. HIFAR will be shutdown for decommissioning after several months of simultaneous operation with OPAL for smooth transition of operating systems and business. OPAL is a 20 MW multipurpose research reactor for radioisotope production, irradiation services and neutron beam research. The OPAL reactor uses low enriched uranium fuel in a compact core, cooled by light water and moderated by heavy water, yielding maximum thermal flux not less than $4{\times}10^{14}ncm^{-2}s^{-1}$. The reactor containment building is constructed of reinforced concrete and has been designed to protect the reactor from all external events such as seismic occurrences and impact from a hypothetical light aircraft crash. This paper describes the main elements of the reactor design and its applications.
In the present study, the oxidative stability of Korean evening primrose oil (EPO) stored in various conditions, i.e., dark, cool, fluorescent light and daylight irradiation were investigated. Furthermore difference between the compositional content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) of EPO and that of alpha-linolenic acid of soybean oil (SOY) undergoing various modes of oxidation was observed. The results of the present study were as follows: More rapid autoxidative reations of EPO than that of SOY in vairous conditions increased in order of daylight, fluorescent light, cool and dark. Espectially, autoxidative rates of EPO increased rapidly on exposure to daylight and fluorescent light. This probably was due to chlorophyll functioned as a photosensitizer resulting in rapid oxidation of the EPO during irrdadiation of light. However, there was no difference between compositional content of GLA in EPO and alpha-linolenic acid in SOY undergoing various modes of oxidation. Therefore, theripid oxidative rate of EPO could be due to the catalytic effect of the chlorophyll on the photoxidation and the free radical reaction of PUFA.
Graphene has received attention with its high electron mobility and visual transparency as a promising material for optoelectronic and photonic applications. Combination of graphene and conducting nanostructures i.e. plasmonic structures has recently been researched for enhancing light-matter interaction and overcoming diffraction limit of light. Here we show enhanced photodetection of incoherent visible light with graphene-mediated plasmonics. Gold nanoparticles fabricated by focused ion beam was used as an active element of photodetection and graphene was utilized as an interfacing material between nanostructures and electrodes. Hot electrons generated upon plasmon decay within nanoparticles pass over the potential barrier between nanostructure and graphene and give rise to a photocurrent with built-in electric field. We report 76.7% enhancement of photocurrent under resonant irradiation of fiber-coupled halogen lamp compared to the case without light illumination. We showed wavelength-dependent current response arisen from plasmonic nanostructure, providing a good agreement with theoretical calculation.
New visible photocatalyst(Nanovis$^{(R)}$) has been synthesized to overcome the barrier of limitation of UV light utilization of current $TiO_2$ photocatalyst. It was found that red shift of absorption spectrum to 550nm was achieved. Its physical properties were characterized by XRD, BET and TEM. It is also observed that Nanovis$^{(R)}$ has a photocatalytic activity for photodegradation of Trichloroethylene under visible light irradiation. V,VII group doped into substitutional sites of $TiO_2$ has proven to be indispensable for band-gap narrowing and photocatalytic activity. These test results lead us to conclude that Nanovis$^{(R)}$ can be used for IAQ improvemen and for photocatalytic water splitting to hydrogen.
Nickel oxide-doped ACF and $TiO_2$ composites (NiO/ACF/$TiO_2$) were prepared by a sol-gel method. The composite obtained was characterized by BET surface area measurements, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. A methylene blue (MB) solution under visible light irradiation was used to determine their photocatalytic activity. Excellent photocatalytic degradation of the MB solution was observed using the $TiO_2$, Ti-ACF and NiO/ACF/$TiO_2$ composite under visible light.
Poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-based hydrogels were surface-functionalized with spiropyran (SP) derivatives to obtain photochromic contact lenses. The contact lens reversibly changes from colorless to purple as response to UV light since colorless ring-closed SP state converts to purple ring-opened merocyanine (MC) state under UV light irradiation. The purple contact lens emits red light at 640 nm. Importantly, the presence of SP segments did not significantly affect the equilibrium water content (EWC) of the lens. SP-functionalized hydrogel lenses may find potential applications in developing light-adaptive ophthalmic materials.
A Radioactive constraint of the nuclear fuel assembly irradiated by neutron during normal operation cycle of the nuclear power plant is typically on the order of about 3 kGy/h. In order to inspect nuclear fuel assembly using a VT (vision technology) system, the light such as halogen lamp is used. As the halogen lamp has lower color temperature than the sun light, the objects under halogen lamp illumination are seemed to be tinted with red. In this paper, high brightness LED is considered to be used as the light source of VT system. The high brightness LED, which is a key light source of the VT system, have been gamma irradiated at the dose rate of 4 kGy/h during two hours up to a total dose of 8 kGy. The radiation induced color-center in the LED housing cap made of plastics materials is observed.

PURPOSE. The purpose of this preliminary study was to investigate the effects of adding 4,4'-bis(N,N-diethylamino) benzophenone (DEABP) as a co-initiator to a binary photoinitiating system (camphorquinone-amine) to analyze on the degree of conversion (DC) of a light-cured resin for dental 3D printing. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Cylindrical specimens (N=60, n=30 per group, ${\phi}5mm{\times}1mm$) were fabricated using bisphenol A glycerolate dimethacrylate (BisGMA) both with and without DEABP. The freshly mixed resins were exposed to light in a custom-made closed chamber with nine light-emitting diode lamps (wavelength: 405 nm; power: $840mW/cm^2$) for polymerization at each incidence of light-irradiation at 10, 30, 60, 180, and 300 seconds, while five specimens at a time were evaluated at each given irradiation point. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to measure the DC values of the resins. Two-way analysis of variance and the Duncan post hoc test were used to analyze statistically significant differences between the groups and given times (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. In the DEABP-containing resin, the DC values were significantly higher at all points in time (P<.001), and also the initial polymerization velocity was faster than in the DEABP-free resin. CONCLUSION. The addition of DEABP significantly enhanced the DC values and, thus, could potentially become an efficient photoinitiator when combined with a camphorquinone-amine system and may be utilized as a more advanced photopolymerization system for dental 3D printing.
