  • The degradation of aqueous chlorinated compounds such as trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and dichloroacetic acid (DCA) to $CO_2$ and HCl was accomplished in the presence of UV light and suspended TiO$_2$ slurries. The decomposition of chlorinated hydrocarbons at 253.7 m irradiation was more effective than that at 360 nm irradiation. Our results show that 253.7 nm irradiation alone can be used for decomposing some chlorinated hydrocarbons such as PCE and TCE.

A Review of the Efficacy of Ultraviolet C Irradiation for Decontamination of Pathogenic and Spoilage Microorganisms in Fruit Juices

  • Ultraviolet C (UV-C, 200-280 nm) light has germicidal properties that inactivate a wide range of pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms. UV-C has been extensively studied as an alternative to thermal decontamination of fruit juices. Recent studies suggest that the efficacy of UV-C irradiation in reducing microorganisms in fruit juices is greatly dependent on the characteristics of the target microorganisms, juice matrices, and parameters of the UV-C treatment procedure, such as equipment and processing. Based on evidence from recent studies, this review describes how the characteristics of target microorganisms (e.g., type of microorganism/strain, acid adaptation, physiological states, single/composite inoculum, spore, etc.) and fruit juice matrices (e.g., UV absorbance, UV transmittance, turbidity, soluble solid content, pH, color, etc.) affect the efficacy of UV-C. We also discuss the influences on UV-C treatment efficacy of parameters, including UV-C light source, reactor conditions (e.g., continuous/batch, size, thickness, volume, diameter, outer case, configuration/arrangement), pumping/flow system conditions (e.g., sample flow rate and pattern, sample residence time, number of cycles), homogenization conditions (e.g., continuous flow/recirculation, stirring, mixing), and cleaning capability of the reactor. The collective facts indicate the immense potential of UV-C irradiation in the fruit juice industry. Existing drawbacks need to be addressed in future studies before the technique is applicable at the industrial scale.

  • 본 연구는 광합성 균주인 C. thiosulfatophium을 이용한 황화수소의 생물학적 탈황공정시 광에너지를 저감시키기 위해 광원의 종류와 광조사 유형에 따른 탈황효율을 조사하였다. 광에너지를 저감시키기 위해서는 반응기내 광분산 효율을 극대화시켜야 한다. 광이용효율을 높이기 위해, 세균농도와 생성부산물의 증가에 의한 빛의 산란과 흡수가 세균성장에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구와 미생물이 필요로 하는 파장의 빛을 최대로 공급하기 위해 LED, 백열등, 태양광 등을 이용한 광원의 최적화 연구, 그리고 외부조사형 광반응기의 광투과 효율의 한계를 극복하기 위한 광섬유를 이용한 내부조사형 광반응기에 대한 연구를 수행하였다.

  • LED 보광이 파프리카의 착과와 생육에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위해 파프리카 생육기간동안 일몰 후부터 5시간 동안 red(660nm), blue(460nm) red + blue(4 : 1)광을 작물의 50cm 상단에서 조사하였다. 광원별 광합성유효광량자속(PPF)은 red광 $79{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, blue광 $75{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, red + blue광 $102{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$였다. 파프리카 엽온은 LED 보광한 것이 무보광에 비하여 높았는데 blue광에서 가장 높았다. 한편 과실 온도는 무보광한 것이 가장 높았으며 엽온보다는 낮은 경향이었다. 파프리카 초장은 무보광에서 가장 길었고 blue LED에서 가장 짧았다. 잎 크기는 무보광에 비해 LED 보광한 것이 컸다. 과실무게는 LED 보광한 것이 무거웠으나 주당 과실 수와 상품과 수량은 무보광에 비해 적었다.

적외선 레이저 다이오드가 콜라겐 형성에 미치는 영향 (The effect of infrared rays diode irradiation on collagen formation)

  • Low level laser therapy has various therapy effects. This paper performed the basic study for developing the Low Level Laser Therapy Equipment for medical treatment. The apparatus has been fabricated using the laser diode and microprocessor unit. This equipment was fabricated using a micro-controller and a laser diode, and designed to enable us to control light irradiation time, frequency and so on. In this study, the designed device was used to find out how infrared laser diode affected the collagen formation. For in-vivo test, a round wound 1cm in diameter was cut from the test animal whose epidermal and dermal layers were removed. Test animals were relieved for 24 hours after wounds had been excised and then the infrared laser irradiation group was given irradiation therapy over 9 days one 20 min per day. As a result, More collagenosis occurred in the order of infrared laser irradiation and non-irradiation group. Collagenosis is closely related to wound repair and it was found that infrared laser irradiation groups had more collagenosis and was quicker to recover from wound than non-irradiation group.

  • In attempt to determine radiation effect on the mandibular condyle of the growing rat, 27 white female rats (Sprague-Dawley) were divided into 3 groups and irradiated respectively 5Gy, 10Gy, 20Gy using MK Cell Irradiator. Mandibular condyles from rats on the day of 1, 7, 14 after the irradiation day were obtained, sectioned sagittally and examined by light microscopy, and thereafter middle portion through anteroposterior direction on the sagittal plane was selected to examine the ultrastructural change by transmission electron microscopy. The obtained results are followings. 1. In the proliferative zone some cells showed little organelles in case of 5Gy irradiation, in addition the number of degenerative cells increased and in case of 10Gy irradiation, and in case of 20 Gy irradiation total number of cells decreased. 2. In the hypertrophic zone, narrowing of width and partial disorder in hypertrophic process were noted in case of 5 Gy irradiation, and more prominent narrowing of width and more irregular disorder in hypertrophic process in case of both 10Gy and 20Gy irradiation. 3. In the upper hypertrophic zone some chondrocytes seemed to be dying and the polarity of nuclei could not be seen, if any. 4. The periodic observation showed the severest change at day 7 and the signs of recovery at day 14 after irradiation.

고분자막에 직선편광된 UV광의 경사진 조사법을 이용한 액정배향 및 프리틸트각의 조사각도 의존성 (Incident angle dependence of pretilt and LC alignment with oblique polarized UV light irradiation on polymer surface)

  • In this paper, we studied the liquid crystal(LC) alignment and generation of pretilt angle in nematic (N) LC with oblique p-wave polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on the two kinds of the polyimide (PI) surface. The monodomain alignment of NLC is obtained with oblique p-wave polarized UV light irradiated on PI surface at 5$\sim$60min. We obtained that the pretilt angles of the NLC is generated about $2.1^{\circ}$ with angle of incidence of $30^{\circ}$ at 20min. Also, the pretilt angle of NLC decreases with increasing the imidization temperature on PI surface.

Postantibiotic Effects of Photodynamic Therapy Using Erythrosine and Light Emitting Diode on Streptococcus mutans

  • Dental caries, the most common oral disease, is a multifactorial disease caused by interactions among bacteria within the dental plaque, food, and saliva, resulting in tooth destruction. Streptococcus mutans has been strongly implicated as the causative organism in dental caries and is frequently isolated from human dental plaque. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a technique that involves the activation of photosensitizer by light in the presence of tissue oxygen, resulting in the production of reactive radicals capable of inducing cell death. Postantibiotic effect (PAE) is defined as the duration of suppressed bacterial growth following brief exposure to an antibiotic. In this study, the in vitro PAE of PDT using erythrosine and light emitting diode on S. mutans ATCC 25175 was investigated. The PAE of PDT for 1 s irradiation and 3 s irradiation were 1.65 h and 2.1 h, respectively. The present study thus confirmed PAE of PDT using erythrosine on S. mutans.

  • The optical properties of $TiO_2$ thin films dispersed in epoxy film, which were prepared with bis-(4, 4'-P-toluenesulfonylacidic isoproplyidene) cycolhexadiol(BTSPC) and UVI 6990 in dry sol-gel process, were investigated. In the case of irradiating UV light on $TiO_2$ thin films, how many nanopartlcles of $TiO_2$ are dispersed in epoxy film was investigated by AFM. The absorption peak of the films was showed at 360nm. Squarylium dye was dispersed in $TiO_2$-epoxy film. Photodegration concerned with amount of dye and time of UV light irradiation was investigated. UV light irradiation on the film occurred dramatical photodegration.

Optical Characterization of Cubic and Pseudo-cubic Phase Perovskite Single Crystals Depending on Laser Irradiation Time

  • Photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices based on hybrid metal halide perovskites ($MAPbX_3$; $MA=CH_3NH_3{^+}$, $X=Cl^-$, $Br^-$, or $I^-$) are rapidly improving in power conversion efficiency. Also, during recent years, perovskite single crystals have emerged as promising materials for high-efficiency photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices because of their low defect density. Here we show that the light soaking effect of mixed halide perovskite ($MAPbBr_{3-x}I_x$) single crystals can be explained using photoluminescence, time-resolved photoluminescence, and Raman scattering measurements. Unlike Br-based single crystal, Br/I mixed single crystal show a strong light soaking effect under laser irradiation condition that was related to the existence of multiple phases.
