  • The light guide plate of the TFT-LCD reflects the light originated from the light source, and guides the light to the front side of LCD so that we can see images vividly. This paper is concerned with tile injection molding of the light guide plate for the reflective typed LCD related to IMT-2000. The finite element analysis has been carried out based on the pine stress theory to predict both the thermal stresses of the products in the post-filling stage and the in-plane deformation behavior of the products after ejection process. Based on the simulation results, the mold for the light guide plate of a 2inch sized LCD has been designed.

  • The locking load of a conventional manhole depends on the weight of its cover. Locking-type manhole structures with a special locking mechanism were recently developed to prevent accidents such as stolen cover, away cover from a frame. The weight of the manhole structure can be reduced under structural safety because the locking force of a locking-type manhole is greater than the weight of the cover. A light-weight manhole cover is developed in this study by using a finite element stress analysis and the design of experiments. Static stress analysis and fracture experiments are also conducted to analyze the states of the initial product. The optimum light-weight manhole cover considering manufacturing molds is developed and tested. Consequently, the weight was found to reduce by 16%. In addition, the fracture load increased by 38%.

  • In this study, computational structural vibration analysis of helicopter search light exposing unsteady buffet load have been conducted using combined advanced numerical methods. Unsteady CFD method based on Navier-Stokes equations is used to predict viscous buffet load due to flow separation effects. Full three-dimensional finite element model is constructed in order to conduct static and structural dynamic analyses of the search light model for two different typical flight speeds. Also, the correct performance of the search light can be physically estimated to examine the actual lighting area considering the effects of structural deformations.

  • The seismic responses of traffic light poles are investigated using a finite element analysis. Among the traffic light poles, single- and bi-directional traffic light poles are considered since such poles are frequently installed on vehicle roads. For a more detailed investigation, three different lengths of the mast arm are considered for each directional pole. For a time-history analysis, six actual and two artificial earthquakes are considered and applied to each direction of the poles (x and y) to investigate which direction input provides more significant responses due to the unsymmetrical structural shape. Herein, the x and y directions are respectively parallel and perpendicular based on the single mast pole case. From the analysis results, the average maximum displacement response is developed with the x-direction input case for both types of light poles. Also, the bi-directional traffic light poles show a 13% larger response than the single-directional traffic light poles. Even though the y-direction input case produces a smaller response, the response difference between the single- and bi-directional light poles considerably increases by about 60%. The average maximum acceleration responses are almost similar for both types of light poles.

  • The purpose of this paper is to understand the shear characteristics of the shear connectors embedded into light weight concrete. This paper tried to confirm the validity of the finite element method(FEM) through the comparative study between the previous study results and FEM analysis, and evaluated the shear strength of shear connector and current design codes(AISC-LRFD and Eurocode 4) according to the variation of compressive strength of light weight concrete. This paper resulted that the shear strength of connector embedded into light weight concrete closely agreed to the one of shear connector by Eurocode 4 based on the results of the FEM analysis.

  • To increase the demand of HR Plate with thickness up to 22mm, it is necessary that HR Plate is applicable to full member in steel bridge including main girder. In this study, availabilities of the narrow steel box girder of light railway transit with HR Plate width as a main member are discussed. Computational analysis is performed in 15 bridge models of light railway transit with beam element and plate element. As an analysis results, three models in tight railway transit are presented. In conclusion, it is validated that HR Plate can be applying to narrow steel box girder in the light railway transit.

  • Current, standards light buoys as maritime traffic safety facilities have 10 different types of buoys and the smallest size of those is 4.4m. Therefore, making for easy replacement and repair parts for the type of small light buoys is proposed. Meanwhile, position reliability of floaters by external forces in the environment fall and stability examination should be considered for prohibiting accidents as loss. In this paper, a new light buoy is analyzed on Encounter Frequency types using commercial program and fluid forces is simulated on cross-sectional shape of the float using two-dimensional Boundary Element Method(BEM).

  • In this paper, a six degree-of-freedom robot arm which is very light but capable of delivering heavy loads was studied. The proposed robot arm has much higher load capacity than conventional robot arms actuated by motors with speed reducers such as the harmonic drive since a new type of robot actuator based on a closed chain mechanism driven by the ball screw was adopted. Analysis on the design scheme and on the mechanism of the joint actuator of the robot arm were made. Since the robot arm was designed very light, it has deflection in the links. To analyze this, a finite element analysis on the structure of the designed robot links was made using ANSYS software. Verifying experiments on the performance of high load capacity of the robot arm was performed by loading heavy weights on the robot arm. Through experiments. the correctness of the numerical analysis was also verified.

  • The chicken pineal gland has been used for studies on the circadian clock, because it retains an intracellular phototransduction pathway regulating the phase of the intrinsic clock oscillator. Previously, we identified chicken clock genes expressed in the gland (cPer2, cPer3, cBmal1, cBmal2, cCry1, cCry2, and cClock), and showed that a cBMALl/2-cCLOCK heteromer acts as a regulator transactivating cPer2 gene through the CACGTG E-box element found in its promoter. Notably, mRNA expression of cPer2 gene is up-regulated by light as well as is driven by the circadian clock, implying that light-dependent clock resetting may involve the up-regulation of cPer2 gene. To explore the mechanism of light-dependent gene expression unidentified in animals, we first focused on pinopsin gene whose mRNA level is also up-regulated by light. A pinopsin promoter was isolated and analyzed by transcriptional assays using cultured chicken pineal cells, resulting in identification of an 18-bp light-responsive element that includes a CACGTG E-box sequence. We also investigated a role of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in the clock resetting, especially in the E-box-dependent transcriptional regulation, because MAPK is phospholylated (activated) in a circadian manner and is rapidly dephosphorylated by light in the gland. Both pulldown analysis and kinase assay revealed that MAPK directly associates with BMAL1 to phosphorylate it at several Ser/Thr residues. Transcriptional analyses implied that the MAPK-mediated phosphorylation may negatively regulate the BMAL-CLOCK-dependent transactivation through the E-box. These results suggest that the CACGTG E-box serves not only as a clock-controlled element but also as a light-responsive element.
