  • This study investigated the luring effect of the sardine bait, which is used to catch octopus with pot, as the preliminary study for the development of alternative bait for octopus pot. The soaking time for bait was divided into "5 days or less" and "11 days or longer" The number of times octopus entered the pot with bait and the empty pot was investigated under dark adaptation and light adaptation processes and the distribution of tank section was investigated under light adaptation process. The case of "11 days or longer" sardine soaking time showed higher rate of distribution in the section of pot with bait compared to the case of "5 days or less" In the case of "5 days or less" soaking time, the number of times the octopus entered the pot with bait was similar to that it entered the pot without it even during dark adaptation and light adaptation. However, in the case of "11 days or longer", the octopus entered the pot with bait more quickly than the pot without bait and more frequently during dark adaptation hours. There were cases where the octopus did not enter any pot. In the case of "5 days or less", with less decomposition of baits, the octopus entered the empty pot more during light adaptation process, and it appeared that the pot was used as a hideout.

  • When an emergency light turns on due to a blackout, the intensity of illumination is drastically changed from hundreds [1x] to 1.0[1x]. This sharp change of illumination intensity not only lowers the darkness adaptation of the eye, it also degrades the obstacle cognitive ability of the evacuees, resulting in secondary critical accidents due to anxiety, and fear. Thus, this study proposed a convertible emergency lighting fixture that controls the rate of speed of light in two stages by time with darkness adaptation of the eye in consideration. In addition, the effect of such emergency light is verified by suggesting an illumination simulation without increasing the number of light or capacity of battery to make it economically feasible.

  • Zinc plays a key role in genetic expression, cell division, and cell growth and is essential for the functions of more than 450 metalloenzyme. There are high concentrations of zinc in pigment epithelium in bullfrog eye. Zinc deficiency causes night blindness and abnormal dark adaptation. The purpose of this study was to identify ERG (electroretinogram) b-wave sensitivity during light and dark adaptation in bullfrog retina after zinc and zinc chelators treatment such as histidine and TSQ (N-(6-methoxy-8-qunolyl)-p-toluenesulfon amide). Especially, we focused whether histidine act as a zinc chelator in the Muller cell. The results of our study are summarized as follows: 1) Both zinc and histidine elevated ERG b-wave amplitude and threshold in Muller cells by accelerating rhodopsin regeneration time and increased a-peak absorbance during light adaptation. 2) TSQ reduced those by prolonging rhodopsin regeneration time and decrement of a-peak absorbance during light adaptation. 3) Zinc shortened rhodopsin regeneration time and prolonged a-peak absorbance. These results suggested that histidine may act as a zinc-mediated transporter in presynaptic Muller cell membrane rather than zinc chelator and acts as a GABA-receptor inhibitor which blocks $Cl^-$ influx to the postsynapse.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the adaptation to tooth structure of light - cured glass ionomer cement with that of self -cured glass ionomer cement. In this study, class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surfaces of 10 extracted human premolar teeth, and teeth were randomly assigned 2 groups of 5 teeth each. The cavities of self-curing glass ionomer cement group were restored with the Fuji n. and the cavities of lightcuring glass ionomer cement group were restored with the Fuji II LC. The surfaces of glass ionomer cements were applied with All-Bond 2 adhesive, and cured with visible light. The restored teeth were stored in 100% relative humidity at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. And then. the roots of the teeth were removed with the tapered fissure bur and the remaining crowns were sectioned occlusogingivally through the center of glass ionomer restorations. Adaptation at tooth-restoration interface was assessed occlusally. axially, and gingivally by scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : 1. On the occlusal margin, the group of self - curing glass ionomer cement showed closer adaptation to both enamel and dentin than the group of light-curing glass ionomer cement showing 5/lm gap between cement and tooth structure. 2. On the axial wall. the group of light-curing glass ionomer cement showing 5-$7{\mu}m$ gap between cement and dentin showed closer adaptation to dentin than the group of self -curing glass ionomer cement showing 10-$15{\mu}m$ gap between cement and dentin. 3. On the gingival margin, the group of light-curing glass ionomer cement showing 2-$5{\mu}m$ gap between cement and dentin(X 1200) showed closer adaptation to dentin than the group of self-curing glass ionomer cement showing 20pm gap between cement and dentin(X 600). 4. The group of self -curing glass ionomer cement showed closer adaptation on the occlusal margin than on the gingival margin, and the group of light-curing glass ionomer cement showed similar adaptation on both occlusal and gingival margins.

  • The molecular basis of plant adaptation to the environment is one of the most complex areas of plant science and an understanding of this subject is critical to our ability to feed an increasing word population. Research on plant adaptation to the environment often involves two complementary approaches; top-down studies of well-adapted plants with the goal of identifying and describing the biochemical basis of adaptation and bottom-up targeted analysis of specific biochemical mechanisms with the goal of understanding how these mechanisms contribute to overall plant performance. This brief review will provide examples of both of these approaches by describing the study of sorghum's adaptation to dry environments and the role of a blue light responsive chloroplast promoter that helps protect plants against damage by high irradiance.

  • Light plays an important role in making a continuity of space and in determining the distinctive expression and char-acter of a space. Particularly, the introduction of natural light derives from our esthetic needs, as well as from the fundamental biologi-cal necessities of human beings. And also, adaptation to time and space is the vital factor of human survival and prosperity. Our visual recognition of light is usually formed not only by practical illumination but by analogy, expection and expe-rienced of lighting itself. As the forecase of natural light is (almost) impossible be-cause of variables such as changing weather, reflection rate of light and the patterns of shade, in designing the introduc-tion of daylight, there should be follow-ed careful considera-tion of the adaptation to such variety and the impet-us of light. The research was conducted to mane a contribution to cre-ate more rich and beautiful interior spaces by studying the characteristic of light which is one of the important factors of interior space design, and by inquiring the way to intro-duce light and its effect through the practical examples of Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to compare three-dimensional adaptation with the rinsing time of the temporary crown produced using the digital light processing method. Methods: The maxillary right first molar abutment was scanned with a dental scanner. A temporary crown was designed with the scanned abutment. The designed crown was made of 10 temporary crowns using a digital light processing printer. The crowns were divided into the 5-minute and 10-minute rinsing groups; 5 temporary crown washes were performed for each group. In order to obtain the internal data, each group was scanned for a temporary crown. The three-dimensional fit was measured by superimposing the scanned internal surface data and the abutment data. The average comparison of three-dimensional adaptation was analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The 5-minute rinsing group showed a significantly higher adaptation of 71.42±3.08 ㎛ as compared to the 10-minute rinsing group (67.52±0.92 ㎛) (p<0.05). Conclusion: When making a temporary crown with a digital light processing method, a rinsing time of 10 minutes is appropriate.

  • Objectives: The internal adaptation of composite restorations with or without resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) was analyzed non-destructively using Microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). Materials and Methods: Thirty intact human teeth were used. The specimens were divided into 3 groups. In the control group, the cavities were etched with 10% phosphoric acid for 15 sec. Composite resin was filled into the cavity without adhesive. In group 1, light cured glass ionomer cement (GIC, Fuji II LC, GC) was applied as a base. The cavities were then etched, bonded, light cured and filled with composites. In group 2, the cavities were then etched, bonded, light cured and filled with composites without base application. They were immersed in a 25% silver nitrate solution. Micro-CT was performed before and after mechanical loading. One-way ANOVA with Duncan analysis was used to compare the internal adaptation between the groups before or after loading. A paired t-test was used to compare internal adaptation before and after mechanical loading. All statistical inferences were made within the 95% confidence interval. Results: The silver nitrate solution successfully penetrated into the dentinal tubules from the pulp spaces, and infiltrated into the gap between restoration and pulpal floor. Group 2 showed a lower adaptation than the control group and group 1 (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the control group and group 1. For all groups, there was a significant difference between before and after mechanical loading (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The internal adaptation before and after loading was better when composites were bonded to tooth using adhesive than composites based with RMGIC.
