Early growth, pigmentation, protein content, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity of red curly lettuces (Lactuca sativa L.) grown under different lighting conditions were investigated. Fluorescent lamps (control), blue, red, and blue plus red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were used as light sources for 10 days. An equal proportion (1:1) of blue and red LEDs was used in the mixed radiation condition. Compared with the control, monochromic red or blue lighting increased fresh and dry weights of 'Ttuksum' and 'Jaju' lettuces. Anthocyanin synthesis was also significantly promoted by the mixed radiation of blue and red LEDs. The mixed radiation also increased the protein content and PAL enzyme activity of 'Ttuksum' leaves by about 200% compared to other treatments. Anthocyanin content was the highest in lettuces subjected to the mixture radiation of blue and red light treatment, while anthocyanin synthesis was inhibited by monochromic red light. The results of the present study indicate that growth and pigment synthesis in lettuces are significantly enhanced by exposure to mixed radiation from blue and red LEDs.

This paper presents a portable and compact optical device which can conveniently be used to perform a functional analysis of human liver function. The proposed system employed red/green LEDs, as a light source, and CMOS image sensor, which is commonly used in cellular phones. With this system, several blood serum samples have been evaluated for liver functional analysis by measuring light absorption level through the blood serum samples depending on aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and total bilirubin concentration. The light absorption through the blood serum samples containing AST, ALT, or total bilirubin can provide their concentrations. The green light absorption is more sensitive to the concentration of AST or ALT, and the red light absorption is more sensitive to the total bilirubuin concentration. Additional calibration steps were performed by using a MATLAB program in order to eliminate the light scattering effects from the extraneous particles existing in each blood serum sample. From the blind test, three standard light intensity curves through each enzyme have been obtained and the enzyme concentration values have been compared to those obtained from a commercially available biochemistry analyzer (Toshiba 200 FR). The average percent difference in the obtained concentrations from two systems for AST, ALT, and total bilirubin concentration came out to be 7.79%, 7.98%. and 7.56%, respectively, with the adjusted coefficient of determination (R2) higher than 0.98. This system can possibly lead to a low-cost and simple system that can be used as a point-of-care (POC) system in a condition without advanced equipments.
The Sporulation of Didymella bryomiae were observed under diurnal cycles of light/darkness of near ultraviolet light (NUV) and artificial daylight (ADL) and continous darkness in eight isolates growing on PDA and V-8 juice agar. Light stimulated pycindial and perithecial formation of this fungus on potato dextrose agar and V-8 juice agar. Sprulation was poor in darkness, but some isolates were able to produce pycnidia and perithecia in the absence of light. Perithecial formation was much better under artificial daylight (ADL) on V-8 juice agar than those grown under near ultraviolet light (NUV). In general, cultures grown on V-8 juice agar sporulated better than cultures grown on PDA under three setsof light condition. Most of the pycnidiospores obtained from each isolates of this fungus grown on PDA were non-septate and microtype, but macrotype of non-septate and uniseptate pycnidiospores were produced on V-8 juice agar. Pycnidiospore produced on V-8 juice agar were similar to those produced on the radicle of naturally infected seeds. The appearance of perithecia were quite distinctive from pycnidia. The mature perithecia were darker than pycnidia and whitish spore masses formed on the ostiole of perithecia.

In this study, we researched a pendant-type aspherical optical system, which could be applied to street lighting and security lighting in Europe. The goal of this research was eco-friendly artificial lighting that could be used for the one-to-one replacement of ordinary lighting. LED lighting was miniaturized by using one COB LED Module and one aspherical optical system, which could control the luminosity of the LED. Through the aspherical optical system, the light distribution angle could be controlled in a range of $140^{\circ}$ for the X-axis and $40^{\circ}$ for the Y-axis. This means that this optical system is appropriate for catenary-type lighting, which is widely used in Europe on both narrow and broad roads. The performance was determined using a lighting simulation program. This lighting system simulation showed that road rates M4 and M5 could be satisfied, with the condition of a 13-m height and 50-m distance (U0 and TI). The simulation program estimated that light pollution, which disturbs sleep, could beeliminated in the European streetlight case. Determining methods for the light distribution control, performance, and optimal lighting setup conditions is very important to prevent light pollution. Moreover, the initial step of developing the lighting system design and post management will require an effort with much analysis.

The retinomotor responses of jack mackerel, Trachurus japonicus and carp, Cyprinus carpio were studied for the different strobe flash frequencies in respects of the application of the light stimulus to herding and barrier system. The strobe flash frequencies ranged at 1.7, 5, 10, 25, 430Hz in jack mackerel and 1.7, 5, 25Hz in carp. The retinal adaptation ratio was examined histologically according to the time elasped of 1, 5, 10, 30min after turning on the light in each experimental condition. Cone index were determined in order to express the retinal adaptation ratio. Jack mackerel showed an increase of the retinal adaptation ratio ranging from average 27% at the pre-stimulus light to 42.6%, 49.8%, 59.8% and 83.1% at the irradiation times of 1, 5, 10 and 30min., respectively. Carp showed an increase of the retinal adaptation ratio ranging from average 28.4% at the pre-stimulus light to 51%, 53.9% and 91.3% at the irradiation times of 1, 5 and 30min., respectively. The light adaptation process was observed to be fast approximately in order of 430Hz, 25Hz, 5Hz, 1.7Hz and 10Hz for jack mackerel, and 25Hz, 5Hz and 1.7Hz for carp, and to be light-adaptated in 30 minutes.
Lumostatic operation for cultivation of Haematococcus pluvialis was assessed to test the scale-up strategy of photobioreactors. Lumostatic operation is a method of maintaining a proper light condition based on the specific light uptake rate ($q_e$), by cells. Lumostatic operations were performed in 0.4-, 2-, 10-, and 30-1 scale bubble column photobioreactors and the results were compared with cultures illuminated with constant light intensity. Significant differences were observed in the maximal cell concentrations obtained from 0.4-, 2-, 10-, and 30-1 scale photobioreactors under constant light intensity, yielding the maximal cell concentrations of $2.8{\times}10^5$, $2.2\times10^5$, $1.5\times10^5$, and $1.1\times10^5$ cells/ml, respectively. The maximal cell concentration in a 0.4-1 photobioreactor under lumostatic operation was $4.3\times10^5$ cells/ml. Furthermore, those in 2-, 10-, and 30-1 scale photobioreactors were about the same as that in the 0.4-1 photobioreactor. The results suggest that lumostatic operation with proper $q_e$ is a good strategy for increasing the cell growth of Haematococcus pluvialis compared with a constant supply of light energy. Therefore, lumostatic operation is not only an efficient way to achieve high cell density cultures with minimal power consumption in microalgal cultures but it is also a perfect parameter for the scale-up of photobioreactors.

National parks provide recreation, health, and science to human being. The provision of beautiful landscape view of the national park improves an economic and social phase of a nation. However, visibility impairment frequently occurred in the national park area of Gyeongju. The purpose of this study is to investigate the physical and the chemical characteristics of visibility reduction observed at the national park area of Gyeongju. Optical, chemical, meteorological characteristics and scenic monitoring were performed at the visibility monitoring station of Gyeongju University located at the Seoak section of Gyeongju national park from April 28 to May 9, 2008. Light extinction, light scattering, and light absorption coefficients were continuously measured using a transmissometer, a nephelometer, and an aethalometer, respectively. In order to investigate the impact of aerosol chemistry on visibility impairment, size-resolved aerosols were collected at intervals of 2-hour (from 8 A.M. to 6 P.M.) and 14-hour (from 6 P.M. to 8 A.M.) interval each sampling day. The average light extinction coefficient and the average visual range were measured to be $270{\pm}135\;Mm^{-1}$ and $14.5{\pm}6.3\;km$ during the intensive monitoring period, respectively. It was revealed that sulfate particle was the largest contributor to the light extinction under hazy condition. Organic mass accounted for about 26% of the average light extinction. The mass extinction efficiencies for $PM_{1.0}$, $PM_{2.5}$, and $PM_{10}$ were estimated to be 9.0, 4.7, and $2.7\;m^2\;g^{-1}$ under the consideration of water growth function of hygroscopic aerosols, respectively.

The purpose of this study is to find the light intensity which induced maximum gathering rate and to observe the variation of the gathering rate both in daytime and tat night by using Striped puffer, Fugu xanthopterus (Temminck et Schlegel). An experimental tank(360L$\times$50W$\times$55H cm) was set up in a dark room. An illumination system was attached to the end of one side of the tank to control horizontal light intensity. Eight artificial light sources were prepared by combination of three light bulbs (10W, 60W, 100W) and eight filters. During the experiment water depth was maintained 50 cm level in the tank. The tank was marked into six longitudinal sections each being 60cm long to observe the distribution of fish. The fish were acclimatized in dark condition for 50 minutes prior to the main experiment. Upon turning on the light, the number of fish in each section was counted 60 times every 30 seconds, and the gathering rate was obtained from the average number of fish in each section. The light intensity inducing maximum gathering rate was 298.56 lux (188.44-444.96 lux) at daytime and 298.56 lux (188.44-444.96 lux) at night. The variation of the gathering rate of fish in illumination time was increasing trend fluctuately and did not show any distinctive difference between day and night.
