  • The number of engines for fighters has been decided by thrust required and available engines at the time since the beginning of the jet age. However, many factors such as combat effectiveness, survivability, performance, and cost were considered as engine technology has been progressed. From the vietnam war and desert storm, a twin engine fighter was shown slight superiority to a single engine one in an vulnerability, but single engine fighters were a little predominant in susceptibility This paper includes the trade-off study results on the number of engines for the supersonic light attack aircraft with single and twin engines. Twin engine configuration is 8%, 26%, and 13% higher than single engine one in MTOGW, Flyaway Cost, and LCC respectively. Little difference has been found in RM&S, Maneuver and field performance. According to the factors above, single engine fighter is profitable for low class and twin engine one for medium and higher class.

  • This paper addresses the design of the auto race-track and figure-8 flight mode which can be applied to expand the loitering flight mode and increase the safety of UAV. To implement these flight modes, necessary waypoints and entry points can be calculated automatically from several information of the ground control system. The flight logic is proposed to pass the desired waypoints as well as entry points and transfer to the desired flight path by combining the light-of-sight and loitering guidance controller. The proposed algorithm and logic is verified using the 6-DOF UAV model and nonlinear simulation under the several flight conditions.

  • It is true that the dependency on import is currently high in case of the safety checkup system of domestic airplanes, and it is at the point of time that localization of HUMS for small airplanes is required. In this study, the design factors were selected for the lightweight of HUMS for small airplanes by using Pro-Engineer which is a design tool and Abaqus. 9 models were made through experiment plans with Taguchi method for this, and the each model for weight lightening was selected through vibration analysis and shock analysis while in operation with experiment profile values. After fabricating HUMS, it was verified that as a result of experiment with the same profile values as the analysis, there was similarity between the analyzed values and values of the experiment. As a result of performing weight lightening which is the purpose of the study, electronic performance for small airplanes is assured and a design plan reducing 15 % weight compared to the targeted weight was deduced. Besides, it could be verified that the light weight model satisfied the maximum allowable displacement value of PCB[printed circuit board] and accordingly satisfied electronic properties of HUMS. In this study, the reliability of a product was certified through the result of an experiment on ground. If the reliability of HUMS were verified through a test flight in the future, it is considered that it would make a big contribution to localization of aerospace electronic equipment.

  • The main objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of process variables which were forming ability, flow displacement, effective stress, effective strain, fluid vector and products defects on manufactured artificial lightweight aggregate made of both incinerated sewage sludge ash and clay by means of the numerical analysis of a rigid-plastic finite element method. CATIA (3D CAD program) was used for an extrusion metal mold design that was widely used in designing aircraft, automobile and metallic molds. A metal forming analysis program (ATES Co.) had a function of a rigid-plastic finite element method was used to analyze the program. The result of extrusion forming analysis indicated clearly that a shape retention of the manufactured artificial light-weight aggregate could be maintained by increasing the extrusion ratio (increasing compressive strength inside of extrusion die) and decreasing the die angle. The stress concentration of metal mold was increased by increasing an extrusion ratio, and it was higher in a junction of punch and materials, friction parts between a bottom of the punch and inside of a container, a place of die angle and a place of die of metal mold. Therefore, a heat treatment as well as a rounding treatment for stress distribution in the higher stress concentration regions were necessary to extend a lifetime of the metallic mold. A deformity of the products could have made from several factors which were a surface crack, a lack of the shape retention and a crack of inside of the products. Specially, the surface crack in the products was the most notably affected by the extrusion ratio.

  • The High-tensile steel has been recognized as a promising concept for structural design of light weight transportation systems such as aircraft high speed trains and fast ships. Using the high-tensile steel has been widely used in ship structures, and this enables to reduce the plate thickness. Using the high-tensile steel effectively for a ship hull, the plate thickness becomes thin so that plate buckling may take place. Therefore, precise assessment of the behavior of plate above primary buckling load is important. In this study, examined closely secondary buckling behavior after initial buckling of thin plate structure which operated compressive load according to the various kinds of yield stress with simply supported boundary condition. Analysis method is F.E.M by commercial program(ANSYS V7.1) and complicated nonlinear behaviour can analyze using art-length method about secondary buckling.

  • The development of new materials with light weight and high strength has become vital to the machinery, aircraft and auto industries. However, there are a lot of problems with developing such materials that require expensive tools, and a great deal of time and effort. Therefore, the improvement of fatigue strength and fatigue life are mainly focused on by adopting residual stress(in this thesis). The compressive residual stress was imposed on the surface according to each shot velocity(57, 70, 83, 96 m/sec) based on Shot-peening, which is the method of improving fatigue lift: and strength. By using the methods mentioned above, I arrived at the following conclusions 1. The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of the Shot-peened material was lower than that of the Un-peened material. And in stage I, ${\Delta}K_{th}$, the threshold stress intensity factor, of the shot-peen processed material is high in critical parts unlike the Un-peened material. Also m, fatigue crack growth exponent and number of cycle of the Shot-peened material was higher than that of the Un-peened material. That is concluded from effect of da/dN. 2. Fatigue life shows more improvement in the Shot-peened material than in the Un-peened material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the Shot-peen processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation.

  • This paper investigated the drop characteristics of oleo pneumatic type landing gear for small aircraft and the effects of cavitations in modeling the landing gear system. The landing gear system employed a simple oleo pneumatic type damper without a metering pin. In general, oleo-pneumatic type landing gears are light-weighted because of it's simplicity, yet they offer excellent impact absorption characteristics. In this study, the landing gear system was modeled using MSC ADAMS, which offers a drop simulation module. After modeling the system, a series of testing was conducted, using a prototype landing gear system, to validate the analysis model and simulation results. The effect of cavitation was considered in the simulation model to obtain a better correlation between the test and simulation results. The results show that adding the cavitation effect in the simulation model significantly improved the simulation model and better captured the dynamic behaviors of the landing system. Using the 'cavitation' model, dynamics characteristics of the landing gear were further evaluated for other landing conditions, such as landing in various angles of slopes.

  • Most research materials (data), which are used for the study of digital mapping and digital elevation model (DEM) in the field of Remote Sensing and Aerial Photogrammetry are aerial photographs and satellite images. Additionally, they are also used for National land mapping, National land management, environment management, military purposes, resource exploration and Earth surface analysis etc. Although aerial photographs have high resolution, the data, which they contain, are not used for environment exploration that requires continuous observation because of problems caused by its coastline, as well as single - spectral and long-term periodic image. In addition to this, they are difficult to interpret precisely because Satellite Images are influenced by atmospheric phenomena at the time of photographing, and have by far much lower resolution than existing aerial photographs, while they have a great practical usability because they are mulitispectral images. The PKNU 2 is an aerial photographing system that is made to compensate with the weak points of existing aerial photograph and satellite images. It is able to take pictures of very high resolution using a color digital camera with 6 million pixels and a color infrared camera, and can take perpendicular photographs because PKNU 2 system has equipment that makes the cameras stay level. Moreover, it is very cheap to take pictures by using super light aircraft as a platform. It has much higher resolution than exiting aerial photographs and satellite images because it flies at a low altitude about 800m. The PKNU 2 can obtain multispectral images of visible to near infrared band so that it is good to manage environment and to make a classified diagram of vegetation.

  • The axial-injection end-burning hybrid rocket proposed twenty years ago by the authors recently recaptured the attention of researchers for its virtues such as no ${\zeta}$ (oxidizer to fuel mass ratio) shift during firing and good throttling characteristics. This paper is the first report verifying these virtues using a laboratory scale motor. There are several requirements for realizing this type of hybrid rocket: 1) high fuel filling rate for obtaining an optimal ${\zeta}$; 2) small port intervals for increasing port merging rate; 3) ports arrayed across the entire fuel section. Because these requirements could not be satisfied by common manufacturing methods, no previous researchers have conducted experiments with this kind of hybrid rocket. Recent advances in high accuracy 3D printing now allow for fuel to be produced that meets these three requirements. The fuel grains used in this study were produced by a high precision light polymerized 3D printer. Each grain consisted of an array of 0.3 mm diameter ports for a fuel filling rate of 98% .The authors conducted several firing tests with various oxidizer mass flow rates and chamber pressures, and analysed the results, including ${\zeta}$ history, using a new reconstruction technique. The results show that ${\zeta}$ remains almost constant throughout tests of varying oxidizer mass flow rates, and that regression rate in the axial direction is a nearly linear function of chamber pressure with a pressure exponent of 0.996.

  • MANPADS (man-portable air defense system) is a counterweapon system against enemy aircraft, tracking the MWIR (mid-wavelength of infrared) signature of the plume. Under foggy conditions, however, multiple scattering phenomenon caused by the particles affects the MWIR transmittance, and the MANPADS detection performance. Therefore, in this study we analyzed the lock-on range of MANPADS with varying fog conditions and plume characteristics. To analyze the optical extinction properties and transmittance in fog, Mie scattering theory and analytic solution of the radiative-transfer equation are utilized. In addition, we used flare signature as an alternative MWIR light source. We confirmed that the lock-on range could be noticeably reduced under conditions of mist, and proportional to the flare temperature.
