Water-splitting Performance of TiO2 Nanotube Arrays Annealed in NH3 Ambient

  • Increase of surface area and decrease of band gap in $TiO_2$ semiconductors are significant to improve the efficiency of water splitting by photoelectrolysis. In this study $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays with ~7 um length and ~100 nm diameter were fabricated by an anodizing technique of titanium foils using DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide)-based electrolytes. Then to control the band gap of the $TiO_2$ arrays, they were annealed at $550^{\circ}C$ for up to 180 min in $NH_3$ gas ambient. The samples annealed in $NH_3$ gas for 30 min and 60 min showed superior photo-conversion efficiency for water splitting under white and visible light. A $TiO_2$ nanotube annealed in $NH_3$ gas ambient for a period longer than 120 min showed 1 order higher leakage current. It is believed that the decrease of band gap and increase of conductivity in $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays due to $NH_3$ gas treatments result in the superior water-splitting performance.

Li:Al cathode layer and its influence on interfacial energy level and efficiency in polymer-based photovoltaics

  • Recent development of organic solar cell approaches the level of 8% power conversion efficiency by the introduction of new materials, improved material engineering, and more sophisticated device structures. As for interface engineering, various interlayer materials such as LiF, CaO, NaF, and KF have been utilized between Al electrode and active layer. Those materials lower the work function of cathode and interface barrier, protect the active layer, enhance charge collection efficiency, and induce active layer doping. However, the addition of another step of thin layer deposition could be a little complicated. Thus, on a typical solar cell structure of Al/P3HT:PCBM/PEDOT:PSS/ITO glass, we used Li:Al alloy electrode instead of Al to render a simple process. J-V measurement under dark and light illumination on the polymer solar cell using Li:Al cathode shows the improvement in electric properties such as decrease in leakage current and series resistance, and increase in circuit current density. This effective charge collection and electron transport correspond to lowered energy barrier for electron transport at the interface, which is measured by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. Indeed, through the measurement of secondary ion mass spectroscopy, the Li atoms turn out to be located mainly at the interface between polymer and Al metal. In addition, the chemical reaction between polymer and metal electrodes are measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Phytotoxin Production of Nigrospora sphaerica Pathogenic on Turfgrasses

  • A causal fungus of turfgrass blight was isolated from the infected leaves of zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) and identified as Nigrospora sphaerica (Sacc.) Mason by using a light misroscope. Its conidia are large (14-20 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameter), shiny, black, aseptate, and smooth-walled spheres. The fungus caused typical blighting symptoms on the two turfgrass plants of bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) and bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.). The fungus was found to produce a phytotoxic subtance to be associated with the pathogenic mechanism. A phytotoxin was isolated from the liquid cultures of N. sphaerica by repeated silica gel column chromatography and its structure was determined to be 5, 6-dihydro-5-hydroxy-6-propenyl-2H-pyr-2-one (T-3 compound). It was not a host-specific toxin showing phytotoxic effects to various plants inclusing turfgrasses in the leaf-wounding assay, the whole plant test, and the cellular leakage test. The compound caused leaf tip dieback symptoms in turfgrass plants similar to those caused by the pathogen. Thus, T-3 compound is thought to be involved in the development of Nigrospora blight.

영구자석 Halbach 배열을 이용한 초고속 모터용 계자시스템의 구성과 특성 해석 (Construction and Characteristics Analysis on the Field System of the High Speed Motor by using Permanent Magnet Halbach Array)

  • A high speed motor has been generating a lot of attention due to its performance-more light, thin, short, compact than ordinary motors. But they have low efficiency with high frequency power source because of the iron losses which may produce too much heat as well as the copper losses occurred in the rotor windings. The Halbach array can generate the strong magnetic field systems without additional magnetic materials, therefore the iron losses can be removed. In this paper, the Halbach array is applied to the field system for the high speed motor, and three dimensional FEM is used to analyze the field of the Halbach array considering with the leakage flux. The measured values of flux density are also compared with the FEM analysis. And the magnetic characteristics of the Halbach array field system are compared with those of the conventional field systems such as slot-iron type, PM-iron type. Consequently, it is confirmed that the Halbach array field system is more suitable to the high speed motor because it has high flux density, sinusoidal flux distribution than others.

광전소자를 이용한 전류안정부저항 특성회로의 구성 (A Study on Composition of Current Stable Negative Resistance Circuitwith LED and CdS.)

  • 접합형 트린지스터와 발광다이오드(LED) 및 광도전소자(CdS)로서 구성된 광결합 전류안정부저항회로를 진안하였다. 이는 일반적으로 광트랜지스터보다도 더 예민한 것을 이용하여, CdS와 LED를 밀착 시켜서 LED에 흐르는 전류와 CdS의 실효저항변화로써 결합된 광결합방식을 택하였다. 트랜지스터의 콜랙터-에미터간에 인위적인 누변저항을 삽입하는 방법을 도입함으로써 부저항치 및 최대입력단자전압치를 임의로 변화할 수 있게 하였으며, 제안한 회로를 분석하고 또 이를 실험적으로 확인하였다. 누변저항을 1KΩ에서 30KΩ까지 변화시켰을 때 최대입력단자전압은 1.65V에서 4.22V로 변하였고, 부저항치는 -1.0KΩ에서 -10.0KΩ까지 변하였다. 또 실험치에 대한 계산치에의 상대백분최대오차가 11%이었다. A current stable negative resistance circuit has been constucted with combination of coulplementary symmetrical transistors, a light emitting diode and a photoconductive cell. The negative resistance(Rn) and break-over voltage(VBo) can be set at a designed value according to adjustment of the artificial leakage resistance of p-n-p transistor. The RN and VBo calculated in this designed circuit are checked though the experiments, the errors are found less than 11%.

THREE-DIMENSIONAL SIMULATION OF A ROTATING CORE-COLLAPSE SUPERNOVA

  • Multi-dimensionality in the inner working of core-collapse supernovae has long been considered one of the most important ingredients to understand the explosion mechanism. We perform a series of numerical experiments to explore how rotation impacts the 3-dimensional hydrodynamics of core-collapse supernova. We employ a light-bulb scheme to trigger explosions and a three-species neutrino leakage scheme to treat deleptonization effects and neutrino losses from the neutron star interior. We find that the rotation can help the onset of neutrino-driven explosions for models in which the initial angular momentum is matched to that obtained from recent stellar evolutionary calculations (${\sim}0.3-3rad\;s^{-1}$ at the center). For models with larger initial angular momenta, a shock surface deforms to be oblate due to larger centrifugal force. This makes a gain region, in which matter gains energy from neutrinos, more concentrated around the equatorial plane. As a result, the preferred direction of the explosion in 3-dimensional rotating models is perpendicular to the spin axis, which is in sharp contrast to the polar explosions around the axis that are often obtained from 2-dimensional simulations.

누출특성을 통한 폭발위험장소 선정방법의 개선에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Improvement of Classification of Explosion Hazardous Area using Hypothetic Volume through Release Characteristic)

  • Classify of explosion hazardous areas must be made at the site where flammable materials are used. This reason is that it is necessary to manage ignition sources in of explosion hazardous areas in order to reduce the risk of explosion. If such an explosion hazard area is widened, it becomes difficult to increase the number of ignition sources to be managed. The method using the virtual volume currently used is much wider than the result using CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). Therefore, we tried to improve the current method to compare with the new method using leakage characteristics. The result is a realistic explosion hazard if the light gas is calibrated to the mass and the heavy gas is calibrated to the lower explosion limit. However, it is considered that the safety factors should be taken into account in the calculated correction formula because such a problem should be considered as a buffer for safety.

ON/OFF 전류비를 향상시킨 새로운 bottom-gate 구조의 다결정 실리콘 박막 트랜지스터 (A Novel Bottom-Gate Poly-Si Thin Film Transistors with High ON/OFF Current Ratio)

  • We have proposed and fabricated the new bottom-gated polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) thin film transistor (TFT) with a partial amorphous-Si region by employing the selective laser annealing. The channel layer of the proposed TFTs is composed of poly-Si region in the center and a-Si region in the edge. The TEM image shows that the local a-Si region is successfully fabricated by the effective cut out of the incident laser light in the upper a-Si layer. Our experimental results show that the ON/OFF current ratio is increased significantly by more than three orders in the new poly-Si TFT compared with conventional poly-Si TFT. The leakage current is decreased significantly due to the highly resistive a-Si re TFTs while the ON-series resistance of the local a-Si is reduced significantly due to the considerable inducement of electron carriers by the positive gate bias, so that the ON-current is not decreased much.

  • Recently, the polymer insulators that are used for high voltage applications have some advantages such as light weight, small size, vandalism resistance, hydrophobicity and easy making process. During outdoor service of polymer insulators, the surface of the insulating material is frequently subjected to moisture and contamination that lead to dry band arcing. Their tracking resistance, erosion resistance, end sealing and shed design are very important because dry band arcing causes degradation of polymer surface. The shape design of porcelain insulator is formalized but design standard for polymer insulator is no standardized up to now, much research is necessary in real condition. In this paper, the surface and tracking properties of polymer suspension insulator for power transmission is investigated with ICP-AES, SEM, EDX, tracking wheel test and flashover voltage test. The diagnosis of insulator sample in tracking test hass been analyzed by leakage current STRI Guide and thermal image.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate four different composite resins in vitro for microleakage in Class II box type restorations that have gingival margins apical to the cementoenamel junction. Forty caries free extracted human molars were used in this study. The Class II cavities were prepared 1.0mm below cementoenamel junction with a #701 carbide bur. The teeth were randomly divided into four groups, each group comprising 20 treated cavities according to adhesives and filling materials ; Group 1: Scotchbond Multipurpose/Z 100. Group 2: Ariston Liner/Ariston pHc, Group 3: One Step/Pyramid, Group 4: Prime & Bond NT/SureFil. To simulate the clinical situation during restoration placement, a restoration template was fabricated and composite resin was filled using a three sited light-curing incremental technique. The specimens were stored in the 100% humidity for 7 days prior to thermocycling. The specimens were immersed in 2% methylene blue dye solution for 24 hours and then embeded in transparent acrylic resin and sectioned mesiodistally with a diamond wheel saw. The degree of marginal leakage was scored under the stereomicroscope($\times$20) and the data were analyzed by Kruskal Wallis test and Mann Whitney test. (omitted)
