Practitioners are aware of the presence of friction between bracket system and archwire during sliding movement of teeth. Clinically a mesiodistally applied force must exceed the frictional force to produce a tooth movement. The objective of this study were to determine, on a dry condition, changes in magnitude of friction with respect to load, 3rd order inclination (Torque), archwire materials and ligature type. Three wire alloys (Stainless Steel, TMA, NiTi) in two wire sizes (.016, .016x, .022 inch) were examined respect to two bracket system (Straight, Standard), and two ligature type (Metal, Plastic ligature) at three levels of load (100g, 150g, 200g). The results were as follows; 1. Frictional resistance was found to increase with increasing load for S.S., TMA, NiTi. 2. The straight bracket system was exhibited more frictional force than standard bracket system for .016x, .022 S.S. tightly ligated metal ligature. But, torque difference did not increase friction for loose metal ligature & plastic ligature. 3. Regardless of the ligature type, torque and load, stainless steel wire sliding against stainless steel exhibited the lowest friction, and TMA sliding against stainless steel exhibited the highest friction. 4. The loose stainless steel ligature generated lower frictional resistance than plastic ligature in all experimental groups. 5. The following factors affected friction in decreasing order; wire material ligature type, and load.
It has been suggested that the frictional force between bracket and arch wire may impede the tooth movement. The present study was aimed to compare and analyze the effect of wire size, type of ligation, and duration of ligation on the magnitude of frictional force between cobalt chromium wire and stainless steel bracket under the artificial saliva. The results were as follows: 1. Type of ligation and size of wire were the main influencing factor on the level of friction. 2. Stainless steel ligature generated higher frictional forces than elastomeric module. 3. The rectangular wire consistently exhibited more frictional force values than round wires, while there was no significant difference between frictional forces of round wires. 4. In elastic ligature, frictional force decreased with time. 5. Artificial saliva had no significant influence on the frictional force between cobalt chromium wire and bracket.
The frictional force has been considered as an harmful factor in an active unit where tooth movement occurs, but as an advantageous factor in anchor unit that resist tooth movement. That is, efficient tooth movement is planned by using ligation methods that have low levels of bracket-wire frictional force and the anchorage control can be achieved by using ligation methods that have high levels of bracket-wire frictional force that result in binding of the bracket accompanied by little or no tooth movement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frictional force generated between bracket and wire in accordance with the methods of ligation, the material of ligation and the passage of time under artificial saliva. Tested were 0.017x0.022 inch stainless steel wires in standard edgewise twin brackets for upper central incisors in a 0.018-inch slot. The wires were ligated into the brackets with elastomeric modules and stainless steel ligatures. Whole tie, half tie, twisting tie and double overlay tie were done with elastomeric modules. With 0.009-inch stainless steel ligature whole tie and half tie were done by needle holder and whole tie by ligature tying plier. With 0.012-inch stainless steel ligature whole ties were done by needle holder. Whole tie groups of elastomeric module were kept in artificial saliva bath at $37^{\circ}C$ for 28 days. The frictional force was recorded by means of an Instron universial testing instrument (4202 INSTRON, Instron Co., U.S.A.) at initial, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. The results for ligated samples in a simulated oral environment revealed the fellowing : ${\cdot}$In elastomeric module whole tie, 28 days group was significantly greater mean static frictional force than any other group but there were no significant differences among any other group (p>0.05). ${\cdot}$Elastomeric module twisting ties were significantly greater mean static frictional forces than any other ligation method but there were no significant differences between twisting tie and double overlay tie (p>0.05). Twisting tie, double overlay tie, whole tie, half tie showed differences in decreasing order. ${\cdot}$Stainless steel half tie produced lower mean static frictional force than whole tie, ligation by ligature tying plier produced greater mean static frictional force than by needle holder and ligation with 0.012-inch stainless steel ligature produced greater mean static frictional force than with 0.009-inch stainless steel ligature (p<0.05). ${\cdot}$There were no significant differences between the mean static frictional forces of elastomeric whole tie and stainless steel whole tie (p>0.05).
Objective: Traditional retainers (both metal and fiber-reinforced composite [FRC]) have limitations, and a retainer made from more flexible ligature wires might be advantageous. We aimed to compare an experimental design with two traditional retainers. Methods: In this prospective preliminary clinical trial, 150 post-treatment patients were enrolled and randomly divided into three groups of 50 patients each to receive mandibular canine-to-canine retainers made of FRC, flexible spiral wire (FSW), and twisted wire (TW). The patients were monitored monthly. The time at which the first signs of breakage/debonding were detected was recorded. The success rates of the retainers were compared using chi-squared, Kaplan-Meier, and Cox proportional-hazard regression analyses (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: In total, 42 patients in the FRC group, 41 in the FSW group, and 45 in the TW group completed the study. The 2-year failure rates were 35.7% in the FRC group, 26.8% in the FSW group, and 17.8% in the TW group. These rates differed insignificantly (chi-squared p = 0.167). According to the Kaplan-Meier analysis, failure occurred at 19.95 months in the FRC group, 21.37 months in the FSW group, and 22.36 months in the TW group. The differences between the survival rates in the three groups were not significant (Cox regression p = 0.146). Conclusions: Although the failure rate of the experimental retainer was two times lower than that of the FRC retainer, the difference was not statistically significant. The experimental TW retainer was successful, and larger studies are warranted to verify these results.

Resistance to sliding (RS) between the bracket, wire, and ligature has been largely debated in orthodontics. Despite the extensive number of published studies, the lack of discussion of the methods used has led to little understanding of this phenomenon. The aim of this study was to discuss variables affecting RS in orthodontics and to suggest an operative protocol. The search included $PubMed^{(c)}$, $Medline^{(c)}$, and the Cochrane $Library^{(c)}$. References of full-text articles were manually analyzed. English-language articles published between January 2007 and January 2017 that performed an in vitro analysis of RS between the bracket, wire, and ligature were included. Study methods were analyzed based on the study design, description of materials, and experimental setup, and a protocol to standardize the testing methods was proposed. From 404 articles identified from the database search and 242 records selected from published references, 101 were eligible for the qualitative analysis, and six for the quantitative synthesis. One or more experimental parameters were incompatible and a meta-analysis was not performed. Major factors regarding the study design, materials, and experimental setup were not clearly described by most studies. The normal force, that is the force perpendicular to the sliding of the wire and one of the most relevant variable in RS, was not considered by most studies. Different variables were introduced, often acting as confounding factors. A protocol was suggested to standardize testing procedures and enhance the understanding of in vitro findings.
Guiding a tooth along an arch wire results in a counteracting frictional force among arch wires, bracket and ligature. This frictional forces should be eliminated or minimized when orthodontic teeth movement is being planned. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes of width, cross-sectional forms and surface morphologies of stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire after electropolising. Experimental variables included in this experiment were arch wire materials, current, electrolyte temperature and polishing time. Wire widths were measured by micrometer and cross-sectional forms and surface morphologies were examined with optical microscope and scanning electron microcope. The results were as follows: 1. The mean and standard deviation of widths of stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire varying polishing time with condition of $249A/dm^2$ and $20^{\circ}C,\;249A/dm^2$ and, $332A/dm^2$ and $20^{\circ}C$ and $332A/dm^2$ and $250^{\circ}C$ were obtained. 2. With increasing polishing time, the widths of stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire became decreased proportionally 3. The changes of widths of stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire were statistically insignificant between $20^{\circ}C$ group and $25^{\circ}C$ group, but significant between $249A/dm^2$ group and $332A/dm^2$ group. 4 The cross-sectional forms of wire after electropolishing were not changed in stainless steel wire, and while it were changed to rounded corners in $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire. 5. The surface morphologies of wire after electropolishing were scratch-absent and more smoothened both in stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire.
The friction of orthodontic appliances is recogonized to be detrimental to tooth movement. The purpose of this study was to determine the magnitude of frictional force changes between bracket$(018'\times025'\;solt)$ and orthodontic wires(stainless steel, cobalt-chromium, and $\beta-titanium$, $017'\times0.25'$ rectangular) with time. The wire was secured in the bracket slot with a elastomeric ligature. Frictional forces were measured by universal testing machine. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. The frictional forces under dry condition were greater than those in saliva. 2. The frictional forces produced by cobalt-chromium wire were less than those generated by stainless steel and $\beta-titanium$ wire. 3. The frictional forces increased progressively with time, and the amount of increase on first two weeks was greater than on last two weeks. 4. The change of frictional force under dry condition was greater than in artificial saliva.
The goal of periodontal therapy is the regeneration of the periodontium lost by periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the regenerative potential of the autogenous bone graft and guided tissue regeneration in the treatment of periodontal bony defect in dogs. Experimental periodontitis were induced in the mandibular left 3rd premolar and right 3rd and 4th premolars of 5 dogs using orthodontic ligature wire. After 6 weeks, the ligature wire removed, surgical procedure were performed as follows. 1) control group : Flap operation(Mn.Lt 3rd premolar) 2) experimental group I : Flap operation + autogenous bone graft (Mn.Rt. 3rd premolar) 3) experimental group II : Flap operation + Gore-Tex membrane (Mn.Rt. 4th premoalr) Thereafter, dogs were sacrificed on the 1,2,4,8,16th week and the specimens were prepared and stained with hematoxyline-eosin stain for the light microscopic examination. The results of this study were as follows. 1. The apical migration of junctional epithelium was most remarkable in the flap operation and the experimental group II was less than the experimental group I. 2. In the formation of new alveolar bone, it was found in experimental group I,II and experimental group I is more than II. In the control group, few bone formation was found. 3. In the formation of new cementum, it was found in experimental group I,II and experimental group II is more than I. So, the periodontal therapy combined with autogenous and guided tissue regeneration will be produce the periodontal regeneration.

There has always been a demand for orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treatment allows tooth to be arranged by flexible arch wire fixed with tooth-attached brackets. Arch wire generate constant pressure to tooth brackets which moves the teeth to proper place. When the bracket transmits force, the braced wing of the bracket may deform. Deformed tie wing will lead to lost tension of elastic ligature. Then, lacking grip between tie wing and ligature might delay the tooth movement. Furthermore, tooth brackets used for orthodontic treatment make contact with in direct oral surface and this cause feeling of irritation that comes from height of tooth braces. This study suggests an optimal teethe bracket design to make up for inconvenience by shorten the height of bracket and complement the shape of bracket to reduce strain rate using finite element analysis. As a result, new optimal design of teethe bracket indicates lower strain rate of the bracket wing and takes good effects of shorten body height in terms of convenience.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare changes in frictional resistance between the bracket and wire under dry and wet conditions according to a change in moment. Methods: A stainless steel bracket of $0.022"{\times}0.028"$ slot, and $0.019"{\times}0.025"$ stainless steel, beta-titanium, and nickel-titanium wires were used. A 10 mm length lever was attached to the test (sliding) brackets to generate a moment. The experimental model was designed to allow tipping until contacts were established between the wire and the mesiodistal edges of the bracket slot. The moment was generated by suspending a 100 g or 200 g weight on the end of the lever. The moments applied were $1000g{\cdot}mm\;(100g{\times}10mm)\;and\;2000g{\cdot}mm\;(200g{\times}10mm)$. The test brackets were ligated with elastomeric ligature for a constant ligation force and the fixed brackets were ligated with stainless steel ligature. Brackets were moved along the wire by means of an universal testing machine, and maximum frictional resistances were recorded. Results: Stainless steel wire showed least frictional resistance and there was no significant difference between beta-titanium and nickel-titanium except at $2000g{\cdot}mm$ moment in wet conditions. Frictional resistance of all wires increased as the moment increased from $1000g{\cdot}mm\;to\;2000g{\cdot}mm$. Under wet conditions, the frictional resistance of stainless steel wires increased in both $1000g{\cdot}mm\;and\;2000g{\cdot}mm$ moment conditions, but frictional resistance of nickel-titanium and beta-titanium increased only in $2000g{\cdot}mm$ conditions. Conclusion: These results indicated that various conditions influence on frictional resistance. Therefore, laboratory studies of frictional resistance should simulate clinical situation.
