This numerical analysis uses the lifting surface method and frequency-domain panel method based on the linear compressible aerodynamic theory. Increased knowledge of flow conditions within mixed-flow fan should indicates means of improving performance of these turbomachines. Thus, only an approximate solution is obtained whose prime intent is to recognize the most significant characteristics of the "ideal" geometry. For a given set of operating condition, the flow conditions within mixed-flow fan depend on the geometry of the machine (three-dimensional flow effects) and on the properties of the fluid. But most treatments of the problem have been concerned with the two-dimensional flow effects for incompressible, non-viscous fluids. Interest in the field of mixed-flow fan resulted in the undertaking of a program to develop reliable design procedures that would avoid the need for lengthy development work.
A study was done on the numerical and experimental analyses of the aerodynamic characteristics of a counter rotating axial fan. The numerical analysis uses the frequency domain panel method developed for the aerodynamic analysis of interacting rotating systems, which is based on the unsteady lifting surface panel method. Each stage of interaction involves the solution of an isolated rotor, the interaction being done through the Fourier transform of the induced velocity field. Numerical results showed good agreements with other experimental data for single and counter rotating propeller systems. And they were compared with the experimental results of the counter rotating axial fan studied in the present paper. The performance test was carried out based on the Korean Standard (KS B 6311). It was focused on the relative efficiency increase of a counter rotating system for a single rotating one, and effects of the axial distance between the front and rear rotors on overall fan performances were investigated. As a result, it was shown that the counter rotating axial fan has the efficiency 14% higher than the single rotating one at peak efficiency points.
The development of lifting pumps that lift minerals to a mining vessel are one of the vital parts of the commercial mining process. The purpose of this study is to investigate internal flow and its effect on the performance of a mixed flow pump in order to improve the pump's performance. Numerical analysis was performed by commercial code of ANSYS CFX-11 based on flow rate and length of flexible hose. The rated rotational speed of the impeller is 1750rpm. For taking into account the turbulence, k-$\omega$ SST model was selected to guarantee more accurate prediction of flow separation. The simulated results are in good agreement with the experimental results and showed that its efficiency and the head of the pump are related mainly to the flow rate and the length of flexible hose. A lesser flow rate caused more secondary flow through the guide vane passage. The length of flexible hose and flow rate exert much more influence on the pump's performance than the shape of the flexible hose.
Until recently, the primary users of wheelchairs were people with lower body disabilities. However, the number of patients recovering from accidents or surgery, as well as the number of elderly people using wheelchairs, is constantly increasing. This study examined the design and manufacture of standing and gait assist wheelchairs that assist temporary gait disturbed patients to take rehabilitation training and elderly people to engage in walking exercise. A kinematic analysis was used to select a drive motor and design a four-bar linkage mechanism for lifting the backrest vertically. Using a multibody dynamic simulation, detailed design was performed taking into consideration the spatial motion and partial interference, and the necessary push force and stroke of the linear actuator were also calculated. To ensure structural safety, the von-Mises equivalent stresses of the upper and lower brackets of the linear actuator were verified through a finite element analysis. The manufactured wheelchair was shown to operate successfully as intended, using the developed controller for the drive motors and linear actuator.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to investigate the stresses of the middle slab in a double-deck tunnel owing to the slab lift to replace the underlying elastic pads during maintenance work. METHODS : The middle slab was divided into three different sections: typical section, expansion joint section, and emergency passageway section. Finite element analysis models of these three sections of middle slab were developed, and the stress distribution and maximum stresses were obtained using the models when the middle slab was lifted to replace the underlying elastic pads. Various slab lifting methods were examined in this study such as one-, two-, and multiple-point lifts, distributed lifts, and one or both slab side edge lifts. RESULTS : When the slab side edge is lifted, the longitudinal stresses of the slab are almost the same as the principal stresses. This implies that the governing stresses are the longitudinal stresses. The maximum stresses with both-edge lifts are generally smaller than those with one-edge lifts at all three sections of middle slab. CONCLUSIONS : If the middle slab in a double-deck tunnel is lifted for maintenance, the slab should be lifted at multiple points along the longitudinal direction to reduce the tensile stresses.
Reproduction and organ structure of the pale chub, Zacco platypus in Isa stream were investigated by means of histological methods. The results of the study confirmed reproductive abnormality and histopathological features in the pale chub. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of the fish showed two peak in April and August. In summer season, GSI of the male was about two times of the female's GSI. Monthly variation of the gonadal development was very irregular. From the histological analysis of the organ structure, epidermal atrophy, necrosis and hyperplasia of pigment cell were observed in the skin. Epithelial layer lifting and clubbing of the lamella and bifurcation of the filament were observed in the gill. Also histological changes as congestion, cytoplasmic degeneration of hepatic cell, degeneration of bile duct, glomerular dilatation, degeneration of renal tubule and pycnosis of interstitial cell were identified in the liver and kidney, respectively.
Differential item functioning (DIF) based on Rasch model can be used to examine whether the items function similarly across different groups and identify items that appear to be too easy or difficult after controlling for the ability levels of the compared groups. The Oswestry low back pain disability (Oswestry) has traditionally been proved as an effective instrument measuring disability resulting from low back pain (LBP). In this study, DIF method was used to explore whether items on the Oswestry perform similarly across two different groups (participants with LBP and no LBP). A series of Rasch analyses on the 10 items of the Oswestry were performed using Winsteps$^{(R)}$ software. Forty-two participants with back pain were recruited from 3 rehabilitation hospitals in Gainesville, Florida. Another 42 participants with no LBP were recruited from several public places in the rehabilitation hospitals. Based on the DIF analysis across the two groups, several items were found to have an uniform DIF. Participants with no LBP had more difficulty on lifting and personal care items and participants with LBP had more difficulty on sleeping and social life items. For non-LBP group, a high ceiling effects (83% of participants with non-LBP) was detected, which was not be able to be effectively measured with the Oswestry items. Although 4 items of the Oswestry function differently across the two groups, all items of the Oswestry were well targeted the LBP group.
As buildings become higher, larger, and more complex, safety issues for construction workers working at such environments become more important. We analyzed 83 critical accident cases reported to the KOSHA(Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency) for construction cranes by types of cranes and by patterns of accidents and causes. There are more number of accidents related to mobile cranes than that related to tower cranes, but the numbers of dead were similar in both cases. The most dominant cause of crane accidents was "fall of materials". We also analyzed the cases of crane accidents using the FMEA(Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) in order to set up a priority for safety management and also to prioritize research and development items relating tower cranes. In the process, we tried to eliminate subjective indexes such as an expert group survey and use objective and quantitative indexes. As a result, it was found that critical crane accidents occurs most during the "lifting and translating" activity.

A propulsion and lift shafting system in an air cushion vehicle is flexible multi-elements system which consists of two aeroderivative gas turbines with own bevel gears, four stage lift fan reduction gear, two stage propulsion reduction gear air propellers and high capacity of lifting fans. In addition, the system includes the multi-branched shafting with multi-gas turbine engines and thin walled shaft with flexible coupling. Such a branched shafting system has very intricate vibrating characteristics and especially, the thin walled shaft with flexible couplings can lower the torsional natural frequencies of shafting system to the extent that causes a resonance in the range of operating revolution. In this study, to evaluate vibrational characteristics some analytical methods for the propulsion and lift shafting system are studied. The analysis, including natural frequencies and mode shapes, for five operation cases of the system is conducted using ANSYS code with a equivalent mass-elastic model.
