  • In today's building industry the emphasis has been geared more towards construction, thus building maintenance and life cycle have been neglected until now. A direct result of this neglect is the rapid aging of building, which leads to more cost-effective decision making methods for the prolongation of building life span. The following study is conducted in the area of Daegu and Seoul in order to develop the estimation analysis method of the annual operation cost of the Korean high-rise condominiums for the cost-effective decision making support through mathematical and statistical analyses including the present value and standardized measurement corrections. Based on the assumption that the life expectancy of the high rise condominium is 50 years, initial cost is ₩421,212/$m^2$, and a total sum of yearly operation cost during life expectancy is ₩2,154,499//$m^2$), yearly accumulated operation cost is shown as below: $AOC=0.7097t^4-38.803t^3+806.95t^2+11045t-496.52$ ($R^2=0.98$) (Here, AOC = Accumulated Operation Cost, t = given years)

  • The importance of the gut microorganism in the termite, Reticulitermes Speratus kyushuenesis Morimoto, was estimated by feeding with several antibiotics. Antibiotics which killed the bacterium, but not the fungi (Ampicillin, Kanamycin, Erythromycin), or killed both the microorganismw (Cephaloridine, Tetracycline) reduced the life span of the termite from 245 days to about 15 days. On the other hand, some antibiotics, penicillin and pimaricin, did not greatly reduce the life span of the termite.

  • Six demographic parameters including life span (LS), maturation time (MT), net reproduction rate (Ro), mean generation length (G), innate capacity for increase $(r_m)$ and finite rate of increase $(\gamma)$ were estimated in the rotifer (Brachionus rotundiformis) cultured at three salinities of 5, 20 and 34 PSU and under a constant temperature of $28^{\circ}C$. The maximum life spans at salinities of 5, 20 and 34 PSU were 17, 12 and 13 days, respectively. The shortest maturation time (24 hr) was recorded at 5 PSU, and the rotifer at 20 PSU showed a most delayed maturation (192 hr). The maximum reproduction rate was 42 offspring per female in rotifer cultured at 5 PSU, while the longest generation length (8 days) was observed at 20 PSU. Maximum and minimum values of $r_m$ (1.56 and 0.46 individual per day) and $(\gamma)$ (6.67 and 1.70 individuals per day) were calculated at 5 and 34 PSU, respectively. Salinity also showed strong effect on correlation of the demographic traits examined. ANOVA revealed significant differences (P<0.05) between demographic parameters of the rotifer at the three salinity condition. Considering the higher values of life span, innate capacity and finite rate of increase, and shortest maturation time at 5 PSU, the rotifer we examined had a higher reproductive potential and longer life span at 5 PSU rather than at 20 or 34 PSU.

  • This study presents a life-cycle cost (LCC) effectiveness of a concrete with lightweight aggregate. A number of researchers have made their efforts to develop a lightweight concrete, since it is difficult to apply conventional concrete using general aggregate to heavy self-weight structures such as long span bridges. In this study, an optimum design for minimizing the life-cycle cost of concrete slab bridges is performed to evaluate the life cycle cost effectiveness of the lightweight concrete relative to conventional one from the standpoint of the value engineering. The data of physical properties for new concrete can be obtained from basic experimental researches. The material properties of conventional one are acquired by various reports. This study presents a LCC effectiveness of newly developed concrete, which is made by artificial lightweight aggregate. A number of researchers have made their efforts to develop a lightweight concrete, since it is difficult to apply conventional concrete using general aggregate to heavy self-weight structures such as long span bridges. From the results of the numerical investigation, it may be positively stated that the new concrete lead to, the longer span length, the more economical slab bridges compared with structures using general concrete.

  • With the growing interest of microgrid all over the world, many studies on microgrid operation are being carried out. The battery energy storage system(BESS) is a key equipment for effective operation of the microgrid. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of the charge and discharge output voltage of the battery and the characteristics of the life-span variation and the investment cost when the state-of-charge (SOC) changes. The formulas to represent the quality of the charge and discharge output voltage of the battery and the economics due to the life-span variation and the investment cost according to DOD(Depth of Discharge) are derived. The methodology of determining the proper operation ranges of the battery SOC with varying the weighting of the quality of its charge and discharge output voltage of the battery and the economics due to its life-span variation and the investment cost is presented using these formulas.

  • Long span cross-rope suspension structure is an innovative structural system evolved from typical Cross-Rope Suspension (CRS) guyed tower, a type of supporting system with short span suspension cable supporting overhead power transmission lines. In mountainous areas, the span length of suspension cable was designed to be extended to hundreds or over one thousand meters, which is applicable for crossing deep valleys. Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) of overhead power transmission lines was considered to be one of the major factors of its fatigue and service life. In this paper, VIV and its controlling by Stockbridge damper for long span CRS was discussed. Firstly, energy balance method and finite element method for assessing VIV of CRS were presented. An approach of establishing FE model of long span CRS structure with dampers was introduced. The effect of Stockbridge damper for overall vibration of CRS was compared in both theoretical and numerical approaches. Results indicated that vibration characteristics of conductor in long span CRS compared with traditional tower-line system. Secondly, analysis on long span CRS including Stockbridge damper showed additional dampers installed were essential for controlling maximum dynamic bending stresses of conductors at both ends. Moreover, factors, including configuration and mass of Stockbridge damper, span length of suspension cable and conductor and number of spans of conductor, were assessed for further discussion on VIV controlling of long span CRS.

  • Possibility of fatigue failure in punching shear of reinforced concrete decks of highway bridges is analytically investigated by applying Matsui et al.'s experimental finding to models of 2-meter span decks designed in compliance with previous and current codes. Decks made of concrete of compressive strength of 240㎏/㎠ showed longer fatigue life than decks made of 210㎏/㎠ concrete at the same Md/U rations ; higher Md/U ratio resulted in linger fatigue life but its effect is insignificant in decks having effective depths of 14 and 15cm. Decks designed to higher load factors as specified by current codes showed longer fatigue life than decks designed to lower load factors specified by previous codes ; yet fatigue failure appeared to occur in both decks within their normal life span, thus indicating need for redefining the minimum deck thickness.

  • To characterize gene expression that is dependent on the strength of calorie restriction (CR), we obtained transcriptome at different levels of glucose, which is a major energy and carbon source for budding yeast. To faithfully mimic mammalian CR in yeast culture, we reconstituted and grew seeding yeast cells in fresh 2% YPD media before inoculating into 2%, 1%, 0.5% and 0.25% YPD media to reflect different CR strengths. We collected and characterized 160 genes that responded to CR strength based on the rigorous statistical analyses of multiple test corrected ANOVA (adjusted p value < 0.1 or raw p value < 0.0031) and Pearson correlation (|r| > 0.7). Based on the individual gene studies and the GO Term Finder analysis of 160 genes, we found that CR dose-dependently and gradually increased mitochondrial function at the transcriptional level. Therefore, we suggest these 160 genes are markers that respond to CR strength and that might be useful in elucidating CR mechanisms, especially how stronger CR extends life span more.
