  • The present study describes the morphology, taxonomy, and distribution of species belonging to the diatom genus Rhizosolenia in Korea's marine coastal waters. From September 2008 to February 2010, we collected phytoplankton samples at 30 sites along the Korean coastline and studied them by light and scanning electron microscopy. We found 6 rhizosolenid genera in our samples: Rhizosolenia, Dactyliosolen, Guinardia, Pseudosolenia, Proboscia, and Neocalyptrella. In the present paper, we studied the following rhizosolenid species and compared them with congeners: R. pungens, R. fallax, R. imbricata, Rhizosolenia sp. 1, and Rhizosolenia sp. 2. The morphology of R. pungens exhibits important diagnostic characteristics in its girdle segment structure in the column and in its external process. To distinguish R. fallax and R. imbricata, the most important characteristics are the striation and the velum structure. R. pungens occurred in our samples all along the Korean coast. Only rarely did we find R. imbricata in the samples and at low abundance. We recorded R. fallax, Rhizosolenia sp. 1 and Rhizosolenia sp. 2 for the first time in Korean waters, but they rarely occurred.

  • The fatigue characteristic of a material or a structure is derived from fatigue tests of standard specimens. However test results of standard specimens are very different from those of real structures or components. Therefore, to calculate more accurate fatigue life, the geometrical effect and surface condition must be considered by comparing test results of standard specimens with those of real structures or components. Thus the object of this paper is to evaluate the fatigue characteristic of a real waterwork pipe by conducting fatigue tests with standard specimens and non-standard(plate-shaped) specimens of base metal and weld metal. Also, to evaluate fatigue characteristic based on life distribution, statistical fatigue characteristic was analyzed by the normal distribution and related data of P-S-N curve.

  • This paper is to introduce the main modeling assumptions and data structures associated with right-censored data to describe the successful methodological ideas for analyzing such a field-failure-data when components operating in different environments. The Kaplan - Meier method is the most popular method used for survival analysis. Together with the log-rank test, it may provide us with an opportunity to estimate survival probabilities and to compare survival between groups. An important advantage of the Kaplan - Meier curve is that the method can take into account some types of censored data, particularly right-censoring. The above non-parametric method was used to verify the equality of parts life used in different environments. After that, we performed the life distribution analysis using the parametric method. We simulated data from three distributions: exponential, normal, and Weibull. This allowed us to compare the results of the estimates to the known true values and to quantify the reliability indices. Here we used the Akaike information criterion to find a suitable life time distribution. If the Akaike information criterion is the smallest, the best model of failure data is presented. In this paper, no-nparametrics and parametrics methods are analyzed using R program which is a popular statistical program.

  • For repairable software systems, the Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) is used as a measure of software system stability. Therefore, the evaluation of software reliability requirements or reliability characteristics can be applied MTBF. In this paper, we want to compare MTBF in terms of parameter estimation using Makeham life distribution. The parameter estimates used the least square method which is regression analyzer method and the maximum likelihood method. As a result, the MTBF using the least square method shows a non-decreased pattern and case of the maximum likelihood method shows a non-increased form as the failure time increases. In comparison with the observed MTBF, MTBF using the maximum likelihood estimation is smallerd about difference of interval than the least square estimation which is regression analyzer method. Thus, In terms of MTBF, the maximum likelihood estimation has efficient than the regression analyzer method. In terms of coefficient of determination, the mean square error and mean error of prediction, the maximum likelihood method can be judged as an efficient method.

  • Vibrio species are Gram-negative basophils that are ubiquitous in seawater, increasing in number as the water temperature increases. Humans are usually infected by the consumption of contaminated seawater or seafood. V. alginolyticus infection in humans is mainly associated with infections of the skin and ears, such as acute otitis media and cellulitis. In this study, the distribution of V. alginolyticus along the coast of Jeju Island, and its relationship with water temperature, salinity, DO, and pH was investigated. The antibiotic susceptibility of the bacteria isolated was also tested. In seawater, the Daejeong area had the highest detection rate, with 13 cases (21.7%), and the Hallim area showed the lowest detection rate, with eight cases (13.3%) in. In shellfish, the Daejeong area had the highest rate, with seven cases (23.3%), and the Seongsan and Hallim areas had the lowest detection rate, with four cases (13.3%). The overall detection rate was the highest in Daejeong area, with 20 cases (22.2%), and the lowest in the Hallim area, with 12 cases (13.3%). The detection rate was highest when the water temperature was highest.

  • In this study, we conducted a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) of two different products, considering reusable and single-use packaging for fresh food distribution. For reusable packaging, we utilized expanded polyethylene (EPE), while for comparison, a disposable box made of widely used expanded polystyrene (EPS) was selected. We comprehensively analyzed the environmental impacts of production, transportation, reprocessing (for reused boxes), and disposal across 18 impact categories. Upon analyzing the actual reuse of 300 rounds of fresh food, the cumulative global warming potential (GWP) values for the EPE box were found to be 280.21 kg carbon dioxide (CO2) eq, demonstrating a significant 75% reduction compared to those of the EPS box. Furthermore, it was observed that the GWP values for the EPE boxes became equivalent to those of the EPS boxes after 12 rounds of reuse. In conclusion, reusable packaging shows substantial potential to contribute to the reduction of environmental burdens, aligning well with global environmental requirements for sustainable food distribution and related industries.

  • In reliability based design(RBD) method, the distribution characteristics of mechanical properties of material are basic input variable. Therefore, distribution type and parameters of mechanical properties should be determined accurately. Until now, the properties were derived from tests with small, clear specimens. However, the test conditions should emulate as nearly as possible the way in which the timber would be used in practice and the test results should, as closely as possible, reflect the structural end use conditions to which the timber products would be subjected. In this study, structural timbers (38mm by 140mm, 3.0m long) were graded by visual assessment of growth characteristics and defects. And then bending tests were conducted on 498 structural size timbers. For each grade, the distribution type and the parameters of mechanical properties were determined for each grade. For the determination of best-fit distribution type, comparing of square error between distribution types and KS test were conducted. Best-fit distribution type of bending strength(MOR) is weibull distribution for all grade. In case of MOE, normal distribution is best-fit.

  • In this paper, the inferences of data obtained from periodic inspection and type I censoring for the step-stress accelerated life test are studied. The exponential distribution with a failure rate function that a log-linear function of stress and the tampered failure rate model are considered. The maximum likelihood estimators of the model parameters are estimated and also the optimal stress change time which minimize the asymptotic variance of maximum likelihood estimators of parameters is determined. A numerical example will be given to illustrate the proposed inferential procedures and the sensitivity of the asymptotic variance of the estimated mean by the guessed parameters is investigated.

  • In this paper, we aim to estimate two scale-parameters of exponentiated Pareto distribution (EPD) based on lower record values. Record values arise naturally in many real life applications involving data relating to weather, sport, economics and life testing studies. We calculate the Bayesian estimators for the two parameters of EPD based on lower record values. The Bayes estimators of two parameters for the EPD with lower record values under the squared error loss (SEL), linex loss (LL) and entropy loss (EL) functions are provided. Lindley's approximate method is used to compute these estimators. We compare the Bayesian estimators in the sense of the bias and root mean squared estimates (RMSE).

  • This paper deals with a group acceptance sampling plan for time truncated tests which are based on the total number of failures from the whole group assuming that the life time of an item follows the Dagum (inverse Burr) distribution. This study is developed when a multiple number of items as a group can be tested simultaneously in a tester. The minimum number of groups required for a given group size and acceptance number is determined such that the producer and consumer risks are satisfied simultaneously at the specified quality level, while the termination time and the number of testers are specified. Comparisons are made between the proposed plan and the existing plan on the basis of size of the groups. Two real examples are provided.
