  • Chloride ions in RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures can cause very severe corrosion in reinforcement steel. It is generally informed that chloride penetration can be considerably accelerated by enlarged chloride diffusion due to cracks. These cracks play a role in main routes through which chloride ions penetrate into the concrete, and also lead to steel corrosion in RC structures exposed to chloride attack, such as port and ocean structures. In this paper, field survey including evaluation of crack and chloride concentration distribution in concrete is performed to investigate an effect of crack on chloride diffusion. The service life of cracked concrete exposed to the marine environmental condition is estimated considering the crack effect on chloride diffusion. For this purpose, diffusion coefficients in cracked concrete are obtained based on the field survey. Using the relationship between diffusion coefficients in the cracked concrete and the crack widths, service life of the cracked concrete is predicted in a probabilistic framework. A bimodal distribution with two peaks, consisting of a weighted sum of two normal distributions is introduced to describe chloride diffusion of the concrete wharf with crack.

  • In order to investigate the distribution of dominant Bifidobacterium species in intestinal microflora of Korean adults and seniors, SDS-PAGE profiles of whole cell proteins were used for the identification of bifidobacteria. To confirm the reliability of SDS-PAGE, the Bifidobacterium species identified by SDS-PAGE of whole cell proteins were validated by using 16S rDNA sequencing analysis. The results of SDSPAGE corresponded well with those determined by the analysis of 16S rDNA sequencing. Based on the analysis of SDS-PAGE patterns on unidentified fecal strains which showed positive in fructose-6-phosphate phosphoketolase activity, B. adolescentis, B. longum, and B. bifidum were identified in the feces of adults, and B. adolescentis, B. longum, B. bifidum, B. breve, and B. dentium were identified in those of seniors. In most of the fecal samples tested, the predominant Bifidobacterium species consisted of only a few species, and differences in the distribution and numbers of Bifidobacterium species were observed between adults and seniors. B. adolescentis and B. longum were found to be the most common species in feces of adults, but not in seniors. Accordingly, the distribution and abundance of bifidobacteria in the human intestinal microflora varied depending on the age of hosts.

  • The transportation is almost dependent on a single fuel petroleum with transportation energy dilemma. Hybrid Electric Vehicle(HEV) technology holds more advantages on efficiency improvements for petroleum consumption at the transportation. And bearing is recognized as the important component of gearbox. Gearboxes for HEV transmission have been ensured the highest reliability over some years in withstanding high dynamic loads. At the same time, the demands of lightweight design and cost minimization are required by thought-out design, high-quality material, superior production quality and maintenance. In order to design a reliable and lightweight gearbox, it is necessary to analyze bearing rating life methods between standard and different bearing companies with calculation methods for modification factors. In this paper, the influence of life time of bearings will be pointed out. Bearing contact stress and load stress distribution of HEV gearbox are obtained and compared with Romaxdesigner and BearinX. And the unequal wear of the left bearing for the gearbox intermediate shaft is investigated between simulation and test.

  • The distributions of fatigue life of concrete for various applied fatigue stress levels are investigated. The concrete beam specimens are tested in four-point flexural loading conditions. Three different levels of applied fatigue stresses are considered. They are 85%. 75%. 65%, respectively, of the static flexural strength of concrete. The present study indicates that the shapes of the probability distribution of fatigue lives are rather different for different levels of applied fatigue stress. This necessitates the consideration of the effects of applied fatigue stress levels on fatigue life distributions of concrete in order to conduct a realistic fatigue reliability analysis. The graphical method, the method of moments, and the method of maximum likelihood estimation are used to evaluate the distribution parameters of fatigue lives. It was found that the shape parameter of Weibull distribution for the fatigue life of concrete ranges from 2.0 to 4.0 according to the level of applied fatigue stress.

  • Inonotus obliquus is a fungus that causes white heart rot on several broad-leaved species. This fungus forms typical charcoal-black, sterile conks (chaga) or cinder conks on infected stems of the birche (Betula spp). The dark brown pulp of the sterile conk is formed by a pure mycelial mass of fungus. Chaga are a folk remedy in Russia, reflecting the circumboreal distribution of I. obliquus in boreal forest ecosystems on Betula spp. and in meridional mountain forests on beech (Fagus spp.) in Russia, Scandinavia, Central Europe, and Eastern Europe. Distribution at lower latitudes in Western and Southern Europe, Northern America, Asia, Japan, and Korea is rare. Infected trees grow for many years without several symptoms of decline. The infection can penetrate through stem injuries with exterior sterile conks developing later. In the Czech Republic, cinder conk is found on birches inhabiting peat bogs and in mountain areas with a colder and more humid climate, although it is widespread in other broad leaved species over the Czech Republic. The most common hosts are B. pendula, B. pubescens, B. carpatica, and F. sylvatica. Less frequent hosts include Acer campestre, Acer pseudoplatanus, Alnus glutinosa, Alnus incana, Fraxinus excelsior, Quercus cerris, Q. petraea, Q. robur, Q. delachampii, and Ulmus sp.

  • Most studies on the joint life insurance assume the lifetimes of insurers to be mutually independent; however, there have been various studies that illustrate the dependency of insurers' lifetimes. Subsequently, some approaches to model this type of dependency have been suggested. This paper proposes a joint dependent lifetime distribution for coupled lives under common environmental effect and applies the proposed model to the study of the joint life insurance. In addition, we investigate the effect of the false assumption of independent lifetimes when there exists dependency between the insurers' lifetimes assumed in this paper.

  • As compared with VOD data, NOD article data has the following characteristics: it is created at any time, has a short life cycle, is selected as not one article but several articles by a user, and has high access locality in time. Because of these intrinsic features, user access patterns of NOD article data are different from those of VOD. Thus, building NOD system using the existing techniques of VOD system leads to poor performance. In this paper, we analysis the log file of a currently running electronic newspaper, show that the popularity distribution of NOD articles is different from Zipf distribution of VOD data, and suggest a new popularity model of NOD article data MS-Zipf(Multi-Selection Zipf) distribution and its approximate solution. Also we present a life cycle model of NOD article data, which shows changes of popularity over time. Using this life cycle model, we develop LLBF (Largest Life-cycle Based Frequency) prefetching algorithm and analysis he performance by simulation. The developed LLBF algorithm supports the similar level in hit-ratio to the other prefetching algorithms such as LRU(Least Recently Used) etc, while decreasing the number of data replacement in article prefetching and reducing the overhead of the prefetching in system performance. Using the accurate user access patterns of NOD article data, we could analysis correctly the performance of NOD server system and develop the efficient policies in the implementation of NOD server system.

  • Dipterocarps (Dipterocarpaceae) is a dominant tree family of tropical rainforest in Southeast Asia. Dipterocarps have been exploited for its timber and disappearing fast in East Kalimantan. In this study, we predicted the distribution of dipterocarpus, one of the main dipterocarps genera, by evaluating its habitat suitability using logistic regression analysis with specimen collection points and environmental factors from GIS data. Current distribution of dipterocarpus was generated by combining the habitat suitability classes with an updated forest cover map. Rainfall, soil type, followed by elevation was the main factors that influence the distribution of dipterocarpus in East Kalimantan. Dipterocarpus can be found in a quarter of the current forest cover, which is highly suitable as habitat of Dipterocarpus.

  • We investigated the distribution of the marine cladoceran resting eggs in the intertidal sediments of Gomso Bay, Korea and compared the data with those in the subtidal sediments. The abundance of the eggs in the top 6cm of the sediments was higher than that in the other depths. The abundances of the eggs in seaward intertidal sediments below mean sea level (MSL) were higher than those in the sediments over MSL, but were not significantly different from those in the subtidal sediments. The distribution of the resting eggs of cladocerans in the intertidal sediments was affected by the grain-size and moisture content of sediments. The results of the present study suggest that the intertidal sediments as well as the subtidal sediments are a potential egg bank which plays important roles in population dynamics of zooplankton in coastal waters, in particular, recruitment of eggs into plankton.
