This survey of 836 midlife women ($51.0{\pm}4.0$ yrs) was undertaken by exclusively a face to face interview by well-trained interviewers guarantying data collection of higher quality. This survey data was analyzed using the SPSS program. The main purpose of this study was to describe the factors affecting self-rated health status, including dietary habits and physical mental social factors. In the self-rated health status of a 'good' group, age was lower (p < 0.05), monthly income was higher (p < 0.01), dietary habits score (p < 0.001) and appetite (p < 0.001) and the degree of movement (p < 0.001) and life satisfaction (p < 0.001), marital intimacy (p < 0.001) and relationship satisfaction with their children (p < 0.001) were significantly higher than the 'bad' group. The level of depression (p < 0.001) and severe feeling of menopausal symptoms (p < 0.001) were significantly higher in the 'poor' group. The results of correlation analysis demonstrated that educational level (r = 0.069, p < 0.05), income (r = 0.157, p < 0.001), eating habits (r = 0.235, p < 0.001), appetite (r = 0.263, p < 0.001), life satisfaction (r = 0.197, p < 0.001), marital intimacy (r = 0.167, p < 0.001), child relationship satisfaction (r = 0.149, p < 0.001), positive attitude toward menopause (r = 0.070, p < 0.05) showed a positive correlation, but depression (r = -0.122, p < 0.001) and menopausal symptoms (r = -0.292, p < 0.001) showed a negative association with self-rated health status. The predictable factors affecting the self-rated health status of middle-aged women were examined by multiple regression analysis. The 'menopausal symptoms - physical discomfort' was the most important variables followed by the 'appetite', 'eating habits', 'menopause symptoms - sensory problems', 'BMI', 'positive attitude toward menopause' and 'high marital intimacy'. These results showed that the 'appetite' and 'eating habits' are important factors affecting the self-rated health status. Therefore, a program of dietary education must be considered for the effective health education and counseling of middle-aged women.
Cognitive degree of musculoskeletal symptoms and existence (or non-existence) of experience was conducted following dental hygienists' health habits, heath state and working environment targeting dental hygienists who were working for the dental clinics in Masan-si, Changwon-si and Jinhae-si in Gyeongsangnam-do for one year or more. The research findings were as follows. 1. Cognitive degree of musculoskeletal symptom following general characteristics was the highest among the subjects who were 40 years old or above. 2. As for the education level, cognitive degree of musculoskeletal symptoms was high while prevalence was low, which were statistically significant when the education level was higher. 3. Cognitive degree of musculoskeletal symptom was high when the subjects exercised, and cognitive degree of musculoskeletal symptom and prevalence were significantly high when they are engaged in leisure activities or hobbies. 4. Prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms was statistically high if they are afflicted with disease, if they feel burdened by their job, if they suffer from considerable physical fatigue, if they feel chronic fatigue or if they feel that their health state is poor. 5. Cognitive degree of musculoskeletal symptom and prevalence were higher, which was statistically significant, when the number of years worked was higher. 6. Cognitive degree of musculoskeletal symptom was higher, but prevalence was lower when the time that they were seated was longer. This research demonstrated that the musculoskeletal disorders related to their job that afflicts the dental hygienists is not caused by one element, but it is possible to see that the musculoskeletal disorders results from the interaction of the diverse elements that are interrelated such as the subjects' characteristics and health habits and heath state, working environment and so forth including inappropriate work related movements. To this, dental hygienists need to improve their health habits so that they can form proper health habits that will ensure health in every day life on their own with the improvement of their every day life habit and positive self-evaluation to act on the health promotion behaviors, education and publicity, and measures to prevent and to manage musculoskeletal disorders in overall need to bepursued after in an active manner.
The purpose of this study was to improve the dietary attitudes and habits of elementary students in lower classes through a 12-week practical nutrition education program called KHIDIKIDS, which was developed by Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI) in 2004 based on the 2003 Children's Dietary Guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Korea. KHIDIKIDS has never been applied in the field, therefore, another purpose of this study was to evaluate the program in the school education and suggest the ideas for the improvement. KHIDIKIDS was applied to a class of 2nd-grade elementary students consisting of 28 children in Seoul during the fall semester of 2005, and the effect of the program was measured by using questionnaires for the students and their parents. The statistical analysis of the study was conducted by using SPSS WIN 11.5 program, and the results were as follows: The children's knowledge on nutrition was improved significantly by KHIDIKIDS education (p<.001), such that the average score on nutritional knowledge increased from 8.32 to 9.64 after education. This practical nutrition education program also improved the dietary attitudes and habits of children especially in healthy body weight, daily exercise, and having breakfast (p<.05). Parents also showed very positive responses for the nutrition education. During the application of KHIDIKIDS in the field, the followings were indicated for adjustment, First, some education content of the week was too much to be finished in a class hour and more hours need to be allocated. Second, some terminology need to be adjusted to help the students understand easily. Thirdl, the order of the's Basic Food Groups' needs to be matched with the order of each food group in the 'Food Tower' not to make children be confused. Above results showed that KHIDIKIDS was effective for the improvement of dietary attitudes and habits of lower elementary students. However, further educational effects would be achieved when the education was started from the 1st to higher grades along with the parents' participation.

Since the 1970s, the average life expectancy of Koreans has been increasing. Our concerns are not simply about longevity, but also about disability-free life. lately, Sasang constitutional medicine has attracted public attention, especially with respect to the elderly. The purpose of this study was to investigate the food habits, nutrients intake, and disease distribution among the elderly, according to their Sasang constitutions. The results are as follow : The distribution of constitutions of the subjects were Tae-eum 48.8%, So-yang 27.4%, So-eum 22.6%, and So-yang + So-eum 1.2%. In both elderly men and women, body weight, percent ideal body weight, and diastolic pressure of the Tae-eum were significantly higher than those of other constitutions. In both men and women, the level of hemoglobin in the Tae-eum was significantly higher than those of other constitutions. The level of LDL-cholesterol was higher, and the level of HDL-cholesterol was lower in the So-eum elderly women. Food habits of the So-eum were the most irregular, and nutrients intake of the So-eum was lower than that of other constitutions in both elderly men and women. In elderly men, the incidence of hypertension was the highest in the Tae-eum, and the incidence of gastritis was the highest in both So-yang and So-eum. In elderly women, the incidence of fatty liver was the highest in the Tae-eum and So-yang, and gastritis and hypertension were the highest in the So-eum. In the elderly, obese and anemic persons were significantly more in the Tae-eum and the So-eum, respectively. The results of this study showed that there were significant differences of physical, characeristics, food, habits, and distributions of disease for the subjects according to each Sasang constitutions. Intake of nutrient was poor, regardless of Sasang constitutions, in both men and women.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary behaviors, eating habits, and nutrient intakes of elementary students with atopic dermatitis. Dietary conditions during infancy, dietary regularity, dietary behaviors, eating habits, and daily nutrient intakes were surveyed and compared between children with (WAD) and without (WOAD) atopic dermatitis using the 24-hr recall method. The ratio of children who responded 'I eat regular meals' was significantly lower in the WAD compared to WOAD group (76.4% vs. 81.7%, p<0.05). The ratio of children who answered 'I eat processed foods or fast foods more than once a week' (p<0.01) and 'I take nutritional supplements' (p<0.001) was significantly higher in the WAD compared to WOAD group. The scores for 'I eat milk and its products everyday' (1.4 vs. 1.5, p<0.05), 'I eat dishes fried or stirred with oil more than twice a week' (2.0 vs. 2.1, p<0.05), and 'I eat snacks such as ice cream, cake, snacks, carbonated beverages more than twice a week' (1.9 vs. 2.0, p<0.05) were significantly lower in the WAD group than in the WOAD group. Daily energy intakes were 1,859.1 kcal and 1,829.5 kcal in WAD and WOAD children, respectively, with no significant difference. However, daily intakes of fat (p<0.05), phosphorus (p<0.05), and vitamin $B_2$ (p<0.05) in WAD children were significantly higher than in WOAD children. To sum up, elementary students with atopic dermatitis had irregular eating habits and higher intake frequency of processed or fast foods, milk and its products, dishes fried or stirred with oil, and snacks compared to normal children. Dietary guidance and nutritional education are required to improve irregular eating habits and induce adequate nutrient intakes in children with atopic dermatitis.
To evaluate the effects of sleep habits on the powers of beta waves and the sensory motor rhythm of the electroencephalogram (EEG), female college student subjects were divided into four groups, according to their sleep habits, as follows: GSHG (Good Sleep Habit Group), CSHG (Common Sleep Habit Group: late bedtime), CSDG (Cognitive Sleep Disorder-Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome Group), and NSDG (Non-cognitive Sleep Disorder-Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome Group). Brain function was stimulated by reading a book for 3 min in the morning (9~12 am) and the EEG was measured. According to the results, the powers of the beta waves and sensory motor rhythm were not different during the resting period among the four groups. However, during the reading stimulation period, the powers of beta waves and the sensory motor rhythm in the GSHG were significantly greater than in the other groups ($p$ <0.05). Beta powers during stimulation also increased in all brain areas in the GSHG ($p$ <0.05). Interestingly, these were decreased in the frontal and temporal lobes in the CSHG by the reading stimulation ($p$ <0.05). On the other hand, sensory motor rhythm, which represents focusing efficacy, only improved in the GSHG. These results indicate that the brain's focusing function during the reading stimulation was not properly operating in the morning in the female college students who had a delayed bedtime and bad sleep habits.
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of stress on the habits of temporomandibular disorder in college students. The subjects in this study were 396 male and female students who were in their first to fourth years at five different colleges located in Jeollabuk-do. The findings of the study were as follows: As for the degree of bad oral habits, "sleeping on one side" was the most common bad oral habit, followed by "enjoying caffeinated beverages," "resting the chin on the hand or a thing" and "chewing food in one side of the mouth only." As a result of analyzing their stress by general characteristics including gender, there were significant differences according to gender in stress about school life problems, one's own problems and economic difficulties, and only stress about one's own problems statistically significantly varied with academic year. When the correlation of the factors was analyzed, perceived stress about school life problems and one's own problems had a significant positive correlation with bad oral habit scores. When a multiple linear regression analysis was made to determine the influence of general characteristics and perceived stress on bad oral habit scores, gender, academic year, self-rated oral health status, stress about school life problems and stress about one's own problems were identified as significant variables. The findings of the study illustrated that there was an organic relationship between the bad oral habits and stress of the college students.
The aims of this study were to analyze the influence of related variables on a mode of housing life style, and the related variables to propensity to housing life stymie. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Variables influencing value orientation of family life were property and the price of housing. 2. Variables influencing spending habits were objective social class (SES), types of residence, education of wife, and price of housing. 3. Variables influencing propensity to using space were found to be objective social class (SES), education of wife, types of homeownership, and price of housing. 4. Variables influencing housing life style were objective social class (SES), subjective social class, housing class, family life cycle, housing life cycle, types of residence, site of residence, age of husband, age of wife, education of husband, education of wife, income, property, job of husband, types of homeownership, size of housing, and price of housing.
In the present work we investigated the effect of regular physical exercise on the activities of erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme, plasma total radical-trapping antioxidant potential(TRAP) and plasma level of lipid peroxidation(malondialdehyde, MDA) in 64 healthy male, aged 34-67 years. The study population were divided in two groups: small amount of exerciser(exercise time less than 10min/d) and moderate amount of exerciser(exercise time more than 20min/d) according to their physical exercise habits measured by a questionnaire. Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) and catalase(CAT), plasma TRAP, as well as plasma MDA were determined. Erythrocyte GSH-Px and plasma TRAP were higher in moderate amount of exercisers than those in small amount of exercisers by 17% and 26%, respectively. No significant differences were observed in erythrocyte SOD, CAT and plasma MDA between the two groups. Mean exercise time was positively correlated with the erythrocyte GSH-Px activity and plasma TRAP significantly. The results would sugest that regular moderate exercise enhances antioxidant defences against reactive oxygen species and may increase the likelihood of a healthier life span.
In order to investigate the relationship among physical status, eating habits and life style, this survey was carried out by questionnaire in 1996. College students(413 cases) who resided in Chuncheon answered. The results are as follows: 1) The means of height and weight were $173.9\pm{5.0cm}$, $64.5\pm{8.3kg}$64.5$\pm$8.3kg in male students and $160.9\pm{4.5cm}$, $51.1\pm{5.8kg}$ in female students. 2) Under 20 of BMI(Body Mass Index) were 23.0% of male students and 58.3% of female students. 6.7% of males and 3.0% of females were over 25 of BMI. 3) There was a significant relationship between the type of favorite snacks and gender. There was a significant difference of BMI according to the level of the frequency and the amount of drinking alcoholic beverages. 72.6% of subjects took exercise regularly. But the BMI of subjects taking regular exercise and watching the weight tended to be higher than that of subjects not doing so. 4) Most students(78.5%) skipped breakfast, which was higher in the self-boarding students in than any other. It was because of the lack of time that they skipped their meals. This study suggests that a comprehensive nutrition education program is needed for college students in self-boarding houses and dormitories to improve their eating habits about skipping meals, and especially for female students to prevent inappropriate weight control.
