Influence of Hospitalization Recognition and Hospital-Related Fear on the Adjustment to Hospital Life by Hospitalized School-Aged Children (학령기 입원아동의 입원상황 인지 및 병원 관련 공포가 입원생활 적응에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the level of adjustment to hospital life, hospitalization recognition and hospital-related fear by school-aged children, and investigate the influence of hospitalization recognition and hospital-related fear on the hospital life of these children. Methods: Participants were 112 three to six grade students who were hospitalized from 3 to 7 days at one of two children's hospital. Date were collected from September 2015 to March 2016. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, multiple regression. Results: The mean score for adjustment to hospital life was $3.43{\pm}0.40$ of 5, for hospitalization recognition, $2.98{\pm}0.46$ of 4 and for hospital-related fear, $1.37{\pm}0.28$ of 3. Factors affecting adjustment to hospital life were hospital-related fear (${\beta}=-.28$, p=.002) and hospitalization recognition (${\beta}=.27$, p=.003). These factors explained 17% of the variance in adjustment to hospital life. Conclusion: Results indicate that adjustment to hospital life by school-aged children is not sufficient enough for them to cope with illnesses and hospitalization. Therefore, to improve adjustment to hospital life by school-aged children, nursing interventions that focus on increasing hospitalization recognition and decreasing hospital-related fear need to be developed.

Posttraumatic Growth, Dyadic Adjustment, and Quality of Life in Breast Cancer Survivors and Their Husbands (유방암 생존자 부부의 외상 후 성장과 부부적응, 삶의 질)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify whether the couple perceived breast cancer as a traumatic event, to evaluate the association among posttraumatic growth, dyadic adjustment, and quality of life and to explore the predictors affecting quality of life of the couple. Methods: A cross-sectional comparative survey design was utilized. Participants were 57 couples recruited from a national cancer center in Korea. Data were analyzed using paired t-test, McNemar test and independent t-test. On the basis of variables found to be significantly associated with quality of life, multiple regression was used to examine the simultaneous influence of multiple predictors. Results: Breast cancers survivors and spouses perceived breast cancer as a traumatic event (43.9% and 24.6%, respectively). The global quality of life was explained by perception as trauma (${\beta}$= -19.79) and posttraumatic growth (${\beta}$=0.46) in survivors, and perception as trauma (${\beta}$= -18.81) and dyadic adjustment (${\beta}$=0.53) in spouses. Conclusion: Results suggest that future research should use qualitative methods to evaluate why contemplating reasons for cancer contributed to posttraumatic growth, examine other potential predictors of quality of life such as dyadic adjustment and intimacy, and identify links between posttraumatic growth and other psychological outcomes such as distress and well-being, using prospective analyses.

Effects of Self-Leadership and Stress Coping on College Life Adjustment in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 셀프리더십과 스트레스 대처능력이 대학생활 적응에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among self-leadership, stress coping skills, and college life adjustment in nursing students. The data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire from November 4 to November 22. The subjects of the study were 335 nursing students in 1 nursing college located in K city. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and multiple regression test using the SPSS Win. 18.0 program. The results were as follows: the mean score of self-leadership was 3.38, the mean score of stress coping skills was 3.45, and the mean score of college life adjustment was 3.35. There was a significant difference in college life adjustment according to motivation of entrance. Goal-setting, self-reward, and constructive ideas about the self-leadership and active stress coping skills were influencing factors of college life adjustment. In conclusion, it is necessary to increase the level of self leadership and active stress coping skills in nursing students. The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to develop diverse educational programs that can increase self-leadership and active coping skills.

Effects of Self-Esteem, Healthiness of Family, and Sociodemographic Variables on the School Life Adjustment in Rural Adolescents (자아존중감, 가족의 건강성, 사회인구학적 변인이 농촌청소년의 학교생활적응에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the degree of school life adjustment in rural adolescents as well as related variables. For this purpose, the data of 192 persons from 40 villages in 8 provinces were analyzed using a SAS 8.1 program. The results of the analysis were as follows : 1) The overall degree of school life adjustment was quantified as about 67 points out of a 100 possible points. 2) The variables that affected the level of adjustment were self-esteem, healthiness of family, age. 3) The explanatory power of such variables as sex, religion, personality, school grades, father satisfaction, and mother satisfaction partially affected significantly in four sub-areas (teather relation, friend relation, attitude of classwork and rule of school areas) of adjustment. The groundwork of this study could be used as basic materials to develop an educational program to improve the adjustment of school life for rural adolescent.

Influences of Mentoring Program on Adjustment to College Life and Self-esteem in Nursing College Students (멘토링프로그램이 3년제 간호대학생의 대학생활적응과 자아존중감에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose was to investigate the influences of mentoring program on adjustment to college life and self-esteem of nursing college students. Method: Thirty-one nursing college students took part in the study. Mentoring program was carried out for 4 hours a week for 16 weeks. Result: Mentoring program showed significant change on the adjustment to college life and self esteem. Conclusion: It is promising that mentoring program can be effective one to increase the adjustment to college life, and improve the self-esteem of nursing college students.

Evaluation of Allowable Bending Stress of Dimension Lumber; Confidence Levels and Size-adjustment

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the processes for evaluating the allowable bending stress. The confidence levels and the size-adjustment in standards were reviewed with experimental data. The results show that, (1) KS F 2152 was more strict than others overseas standards due to the higher confidence level. The 5% NTL of bending strengths by a method in KS F 2152 were lower than the overseas standards and more specimens were required for evaluating the structural properties according to KS F 2152. (2) Due to the absence of size-adjustment method in domestic standards, the specified size and the exponential parameters on the size-adjustment equation were reviewed by size factors. The specified size (width: 286 mm, length: 6096 mm), and the exponential parameters (w: 0.29, l: 0.14) will be suitable for developing the allowable bending stress in domestic standard. (3) The size adjusted allowable bending stresses of No. 2 grade Korean pine were lower than the allowable stresses tabulated in KBC even though less strict method (75% confidence level) to calculate 5% value was used. The allowable stresses tabulated in KBC are needed to be reviewed by continuous experimental data.

Effects of an Empowerment Program on the Adjustment of Older Adults to Nursing Home Life (요양시설 노인의 시설적응을 위한 임파워먼트 프로그램의 효과)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the empowerment intervention on the levels of self-esteem, interpersonal relationships and adjustment to nursing home life of the Korean nursing home residents. Methods: Participants (n=47) whose period of stay was less than one year were purposefully selected from 3 nursing homes in Korea. The experimental group (n=21) attended 10 weekly hour-long empowerment sessions. The empowerment program comprised two components; group education and group discussion. The control group (n=26) received a two-hour education about health management. Results: Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed significantly higher mean scores of selfesteem (t=5.51, p<.001), interpersonal relationships (t=2.73, p=.009) and adjustment to nursing home life (t=2.10, p=.041). Conclusion: Findings of this study suggest that empowerment interventions may be effective in enhancing nursing home residents' self-esteem, interpersonal relationships and adjustment to nursing home life. Future research is needed to determine if such an empowerment program could be used with newly institutionalized elders to speed as well as enhance their adjustment to nursing home life.

The Development of a Program Promoting the Adjustment and its Effectiveness for School aged Children′s Hospital Life (학령기 아동의 입원생활 적응증진 프로그램 개발 및 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a program promoting adjustment to hospital life and determining its effectiveness for school aged children. Method: The sample group consisted of 76 hospitalized children in 2 University Hospitals located in Busan. The experimental group was given the program on admission and feedback was obtained on the 3rd day and again 24 hours later. Data was analyzed using t-test and ANOVA in the SPSS program package. Result: There were significant differences, in information(t=4.235, p=0.000) and coping effort criteria (t=2.922, p=0.005) between the experimental and control groups. There was a non-significant difference in attitude criteria between the two groups(t=1.009, p=0.316). Conclusion: It was found that the adjustment promoting program for hospital life for school aged children was effective, but not enough to promote self-esteem. The program, based on a learning theory, was improved and shown to be an effective and strong method to promote adjustment of school-aged children.

Effects of the Program Improving Adjustment to Military Life, on Stress, Depression, Idea of Suicide, Self-esteem, and Adjustment to Military Living in Auxiliary Police (군생활 적응 향상 프로그램이 전.의경의 스트레스, 우울, 자살생각, 자아존중감, 군생활 적응에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify whether the program, improving adjustment to military life would have an effect on stress, depression, idea of suicide, adjustment to military living, and self-esteem in auxiliary police. Method: This quazi experimental study using a non-equivalent control group pretest and posttest design was conducted from February 1 to May 30, 2007. Using convenience sampling, the researcher recruited 120 auxiliary police and randomly assigned each to either the experimental and the control group. The experimental group received an 8-week program to improve adjustment to military life. Results: Anxiety, stress, depression, idea of suicide, self-esteem, and adjustment to military living were significantly different between the experimental and control groups. Conclusion: These results suggest that programs to improve adjustment to military life would improve psychological health and adaptation of military living in auxiliary police. Replication studies are needed to confirm the effects of this program and to identify the long-term maintenance effects of the program.

Factor Affecting Adjustment of Freshmen Nursing Students to College Life (간호대 신입생의 대학생활적응에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factor affecting adjustment of freshmen nursing students to college life. Method: The data were collected from questionnaires filled out by 265 nursing students six schools from all parts of the country from May 19 to June 4, 2010. Data was analyzed by the SPSS (frequency, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis) program. Results: A positive correlation was found for college adjustment with psychological well-being, coping and mother attachment. The strongest predictor of college adjustment was an psychological well-being. In addition psychological well-being, coping, and contact frequency for interview with professor accounted for 39.2% of variance in college adjustment. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that development of psychological well-being and coping in nursing students is important to college adjustment. Further research in improving psychological well-being and coping is warranted.
