  • The purpose of this study is to examine for redefining the concept of literacy in Library and Information Science research field and in public library services. For the purpose, literature review, bibliometric analysis and case study were conducted. Based on the results, this study proposed the concept of literacy as "a comprehensive ability to use a medium, information and knowledge for solving the problems people faces in order to understand particular subjects or situations they are in" and the concept of literacy service as "the services or programs offered by public libraries in order to develop their patrons' literacies." This research also suggests four new literacy service concepts for public library services: early literacy service, adult literacy service, digital literacy service, information literacy service.

  • The purpose of this article is to take a look into the past twenty years and to evaluate the changes in the organization of the library and the information function during this time period. Academic and special libraries are the ones that have made an impressive progress and innovations to keep pace with a changing environment. New technologies and ideas have brought strong supporters of offering various specialized information services to the library users. The different approaches and experiments to better perform this professional role in the library and in turn, the efforts in the educational institutions to meet the challenges were reviewed through the literature. Much of the literature available regarding the reference and information function deals mainly with the trends in the u. s. libraries. The implications of these trends to Korean libraries and library education are sought in view of our social, economic, and educational circumstances as well as our user behavior.

  • In recent years, many studies on the public library services for individual vulnerable groups have been performed in Korea. From the standpoint of public libraries with limited human and physical resources, however, all proposed alternatives are difficult to accommodate due to overload and in an integrated perspective, the several alternatives have a logical contradiction and possibility of realistic conflicts. Focusing on these facts, this study proposed an integrated direction and strategic plan to strengthen knowledge and information services of public libraries for five vulnerable classes, ie., the disabled persons, multi-cultural families, the elderly, rural residents, basic living subsidies.

  • The basis of library services is to support users' efficient access to materials, and to this end high-quality search services using bibliographic data (bibliographic MARC) must be premised. However, in Korea, discussions on search services based on library catalogs are still in the early 2010s, so it is necessary to understand the current status and examine user needs. In this context, this study aims to provide a solution for public library searching services to become an efficient search tool based on user needs. For this purpose, first, this study analyzed cataloging services of 49 public libraries in Busan by focusing on 'data search method' and 'method of providing information', second, identified user needs by conducting a survey of 322 users visiting public libraries, and finally, proposed improvement directions based on best practices.

  • For a library to be able provide information services and fulfill its function as a knowledge convergence center capable of responding to various information demands, the development of next-generation information systems based on the latest information and communication technology is needed. The development of mobile information services using portable devices such smart phones and tablet PCs and information systems which incorporate the concepts of cloud computing, SaaS (Software as a Service), annotation and Library2.0 is also required. This paper describes a library information system that utilizes collective intelligence and cloud computing. The information system developed for this study adopts the SaaS-based cloud computing service concept to cope with the shift in the mobile service paradigm in libraries and the explosion of electronic data. The strengths of such a conceptual model include the sharing of resources, support of multi-tenants, and the configuration and support of metadata. The user services are provided in the form of software on-demand. To test the performance of the developed system, the efficiency analysis and TTA certification test were conducted. The results of performance tests, It is encouraging that, at least up to 100MB, the job time is approximately linear and with only a moderate overhead of less than one second. The system also passed the level-3 or higher criteria in the certification test, which includes the SaaS maturity, performance and application program functions.

  • The ecosystem of the Library has been radically changing in the advent of ubiquitous information service technology. We are already aware of the digital library due to popularizing digital information resources and we are impressed with Library 2.0 and Social Semantic Digital Library of user-centered, service-oriented library. We summarize the ultimate goal of the evolution of library systems as knowledge services and propose a logical model of library system for the realization of knowledge services. This local model can be applied for a library framework to harmonize the diverse knowledge resources, active users with participation and collaboration, the innovation of library business and ubiquitous information service technologies to achieve the missions of library in knowledge-intensive society.

  • This study was conducted with the aim of identifying the current state and improvements of the public library services for older adult in Korea. According to the online survey of public libraries in urban areas across the country, a total of 172 libraries responded. Research shows that public libraries generally recognize the importance of elderly users, but there are limitations in active efforts. The priority area for library collection and space/facilities was to be strengthened by the expansion of large type and voice books/periodical books, as well as the need to ask librarians for help to find books in high bookshelves. In the case of library services/programs, the areas that need to be strengthened first were analyzed as social participation programs and humanities programs. The librarians in charge of information services expressed their opinions that more specialized services and programs should be planned and subdivided for the elderly generation in order to provide older adults' services unique to other older adults' service institutions.
