  • This research paper delved into the availability and utilization of library portal services for research in university libraries in Nigeria. Two research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The study was carried out in Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) and Felix Aghagbo Nwako Library, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Library (UNIZIK), Awka. A total of 70 professionals (librarians and system analysts) in these libraries supplied data for the study. Data collected was analyzed using mean and standard deviation. These were used to answer the research questions while the null hypotheses were tested using t-test statistic at 0.05 level of significance and 68 degree of freedom. Major findings showed that portal services available in the library showed that the areas of availability of library portal services in Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, U.N.N. includes Agriculture, Health Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Sciences and information about institution, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences. In Festus Aghagbo Nwako Library, Awka, the areas of Portal Library Services include Career Development, Federal Government Programs, Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Engineering, and Health Sciences. Findings on extent of utilization of portal services available in the libraries indicated that portal services are utilized to a low extent in the university libraries. Furthermore, librarians did not significantly differ in their opinions on the availability of library portal services and on the extent of utilization of library portal services in the libraries under study. It is therefore recommended that provisions should be made by the universities and library management to provide and update required portal services in addition to creating enabling environment for enhanced access and utilization of these services. The governments must make an effort to provide funds for policy implementation, necessary technology training for librarians and users, and develop general information infrastructure.

  • This study aims at introducing 'ethnography' which is one of the most representative qualitative research methods into Library and Information Science research in Korea.. Ethnography, derived from anthropology, helps researchers to understand the whole and deep aspect of the research object. That is because the researcher puts himself into the life-world of the research object and observes it for a long time. Ethnography can be used as an alternative method to quantitative research methods. Until now, Library and Information Science research in Korea has used quantitative research methods in almost every case. From the 1980s so-called 'scientific methods' using hypotheses testing, have provided the major premise for research methodology in Library and Information Science of Korea. And the researchers have seen their research object(Korean Libraries) not in the native perspective but largely in the western(especially American) perspective. There is a need in Korea for more culturally relative research. So the desirability of introducing ethnography and other qualitative research methods into Library and Information Science research in Korea can be summarized as follows : I. Ethnography and other qualitative methods are needed for the researchers to overcome the limitation of quantitative methods which have formed the main methodological paradigm in Library and Information Science research in Korea. While those quantitative scientific methods can be a n.0, pplied to the social sciences, they are not adequate for the social sciences. It is because the research objects of the social sciences are human and social phenomena. II. It is needed that Library and Information Science research in Korea pay more attention to the speciality of Korean libraries. To do researches based on the viewpoint of cultural-relativism, researchers should consider the cultural context of Korean libraries. During the past years researchers in other social science fields in Korea, especially sociology and pedagogy, have gradually a n.0, pplied the methods of ethnography to their fields. These social scientists have attempted to escape from ethnocentrism, a problem which has greatly influenced past and present research methods. To get a holistic and in-depth understanding of Korean libraries on the present stage, and to solve their problems radically, it seems imperative that Library and Information Science research in Korea pay more attention to qualitative research methods such as ethnography.

  • The goal of this study is to improve the competitiveness of professional librarians in society. To this end, we analyzed domestic and international LIS curriculum, determined demand from field librarians through a survey, carried out job analysis by library types, and developed an operating model for LIS curriculum by synthesizing all of these results. Finally, we suggested a course of study for civil service librarians based on this model. As a result, the six required courses for civil service librarians are: Introduction to Library and Information Science, Information Organization, Information Services (Reference and Information Services), Library Management, Information Retrieval, and Field Work. The four core courses for the civil service concentration are: Collection Development, Information Sources by Subjects, Public Library Management, and Digital Libraries. Suggested electives best suited to this career path include Using Web Resources, Information Literacy, Information Services in Culturally Diverse Communities, Library Marketing, Libraries and Cultural Programs, Reading Guidance, Library History, Small Library Management, Studies in Library Buildings, Library Cooperation, Managing Digital Collections, and Information and Communication in a Digital Age.

  • From the outset Library and Information Science as a field of discipline began as part of the social sciences (or applied social sciences) in the 1930s. However, due to the practicality and technology emphasized by functionalists, the social science characteristics deteriorated and the science and technological aspect became more accentuated. Ultimately, Library and Information Science was not able to identify its main research subject of libraries and associated apparatuses as a form of social knowledge system, and could not help but neglect to induct and apply theory and philosophy from the social sciences. In the present study, after an examination of social epistemology and sociology of knowledge, which are important epistemological foundations necessary for the strengthening of social scientific aspect of Library and Information Science, a new research parameter called sociology of library was presenteL The sociology of library will be a scheme for an epistemological turnover on the discipline of Library and Information Science.

  • The purpose of this work was to study library website users' actions by tracking their behavior, determining popular content, and identifying browsing patterns and subsequent improvement of access to popular content. The study of behavior models and the use of web analytics has led to the emergence of solutions that improve the usability and functionality of the State Public Scientific-Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPSTL SB RAS) website. These are: identifying user tasks as they are developed, conducting user testing to better understand the event. tracking data and collecting additional data to verify the effectiveness of the changes made. Examining data on the duration of the session and the number of visits will help determine the goals of user visits and develop new recommendations. Usability analysis and testing will make it possible to compare the data obtained using web analytics and the perception of the library site by the users themselves. Recommendations are offered to libraries on the use of data on the real behavior of the target audience of the library website to improve access to library resources and services, increase their relevance and improve information services.

  • Social networking services that connect a person to other people are attracting our attention and various types of on-the-network services are provided. Library has been playing a role of social media by providing with materials such as books and magazines, and with a place for reading, studying, getting lectures, etc. In this paper, we present a method for finding candidates of groups of the library's patrons who share interest areas by utilizing the loan records, which are obtainable by every library. Such a homogeneous group can become a candidate for a study group, a community for exchange ideas, and other activity group. We apply the method to a collection of loan records of a university library, find some problem to be solved, and propose measures for more detailed solutions. Even though the potential group finding problem still remains a lot of problems to be solved, its potential importance is very high and thus to be studies even more for future applications.
