  • By taking a bottom-up "library in the life of the user" perspective rather than a top-down "user in the life of the library" perspective, this paper uses anecdotal evidence from the past and near present to examine the multiple roles the U.S. public library plays and has played as public space in the everyday lives of its patrons. By harnessing "public sphere" theory discussed in Jurgen Habermas's THE STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE PUBLIC SPHERE (1989) and by the examining the rich literatures on civic life and institutions that have evolved from it, the author argues that Library and Information Studies discourse has to expand its scope to include research and analysis of "library as place" from a user's perspective if it hopes to develop a deeper understanding of what the public library does for means to members of the communities in which they reside.

  • The curriculum in primary and secondary school is at the heart of the education. In education, a curriculum is broadly defined as the comprehensive plan consisting of educational goal and objectives, instructional content, materials, teaching and learning method. Many countries has national level curricula in primary and secondary education, such as the Korea. Korean national curriculum has been revised 10 times. Currently, '2015 revised curriculum' is applied in korea. On the other hand, the Korean library association developed called a 'Library and information life' curriculum for information literacy instruction in 2007. However, this curriculum is based on the '2007 revised national curriculum', so it differs from the system and contents structure of the '2015 revised national curriculum'. Since the primary and secondary school applying the '2015 revised national curriculum', 'Library and information life' curriculum should be revised. Therefore, this study suggests the direction of revising the 'Library and information life' curriculum after comparing and analyzing '2015 revised curriculum' and 'Library and information life' curriculum.

The ubiquitous technologies have been widely studied for medical area, construction, commerce, broadcasting, telecommunication and so on. The ubiquitous technologies have extended to the roles and services in a library. The development of ubiquitous IT, the roles and functions of a library and information center should be changed. To adjust evolving environment, this study focuses on concept and definition of ubiquitous computing and networks. Especially, with requirements and essential technologies which can be a technological infrastructure for ubiquitous life, library services and roles in ubiquitous life are discussed by literature review, case analysis and expert interview. With the results, this study proposes that library services and roles in ubiquitous life should be considered in two ways which are network and physical spaces. Also, roles of a library in ubiquitous life will be extended to culture and education center including traditional information center. To perform those roles and services, a library should develop various service programs relating culture and education such as personalized service and educational program.

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of college students' library satisfaction on college life satisfaction. In order to test this relationship, two surveys were conducted involving 360 college students at two universities in Seoul. The results of the first survey show that after controlling for the educational service satisfaction and facilities satisfaction, there is a significant influence of college students' library satisfaction on college life satisfaction. The second study added variables for the three components of library service quality (librarian service quality, library resources and service quality, and library facilities and environmental quality). The results of the second survey show that there is a significant influence of library service quality on college library satisfaction, and again a significant influence of college students' library satisfaction on college life satisfaction. Moreover, the results of two group analysis show that the influence of college library satisfaction on college life satisfaction is stronger in high usage group than low usage group. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed.
