  • The study investigated perception of librarians on their roles in using open access databases to improve scholarship. Descriptive survey design was used for the study while questionnaire was employed to collect data from 53 professional librarians at two federal universities in the eastern and western part of Nigeria. Findings from the survey reveal that librarians need to collaborate with faculties to develop institutional repositories and, raise awareness of open access databases in the university community among others. Various factors that could hinder librarians from effectively discharging these roles were identified. Some of which include administrative bottlenecks, poor internet facilities and lack of navigational skills. The study recommends acquisition of necessary knowledge and skills to enable librarians add value to their services and remain at the frontline of information provision.

  • Background: In cervical cancer patients it has been reported that there in a significant Ki-67/MIB-1 expression is correlated with survival in cervical cancer patients. However, the prognostic value is still not well understood. Materials and Methods: In the present meta-analysis the prognostic value of Ki-67/MIB-1 with regard to overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in cervical cancer was investigated. The databases of PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, Science Direct and Wiley Online Library were used to identify appropriate literature. Results: In order to explore the relationship between Ki-67/MIB-1 and cervical cancer, we have included 13 studies covering 894 patients in the current meta-analysis. The effect of Ki-67/MIB-1 on OS for pooled random effects HR estimate was 1.63 (95%confidence interval (CI) 1.09-2.45; P<0.05). The pooled HR for DFS was 1.26 (95%CI 0.58-2.73; P>0.05) and the subgroup analysis indicated Ki-67/MIB1 was associated with DFS (HR=3.67, 95%CI 2.65-5.09) in Asians. Conclusions: According to this meta-analysis, Ki-67/MIB-1 has prognostic value for OS in patients suffering from cervical cancer. For better evaluation of the prognostic role of Ki-67/MIB-1 on DFS, studies with larger numbers of patients are needed to validate present findings in the future.

  • In this paper, we implemented a content-based image retrieval system that user can choose a wanted query region of object and retrieve similar object from image database. Query image is induced to wavelet transformation after divided into hue components and gray components that hue features is extracted through color autocorrelogram and dispersion in hue components. Texture feature is extracted through autocorrelogram and GLCM in gray components also. Using features of two components, retrieval is processed to compare each similarity with database image. In here, weight value is applied to each similarity value. We make up for each defect by deriving features from two components beside one that elevations of recall and precision are verified in experiment results. Moreover, retrieval efficiency is improved by weight value. And various features of database images are indexed automatically in feature library that make possible to rapid image retrieval.

  • This study investigated the quality characteristics of cookies containing capsaicin, the main source of spicy taste in pepper, which is well known for its various functions such as anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-obesity activities, as well as pain-relief effect. Cookie samples were made by adding the capsaicin powder at different levels, including 40 mg% (C1), 85 mg% (C2), and 150 mg% (C3). In this study, measurement of the moisture, pH, color, spread factor, hardness, anti-oxidant activity, and sensory evaluation of the cookies was carried out. The results showed that the anti-oxidant activity increased when more capsaicin powder was added to the cookies (p<0.001). The moisture also increased with increasing capsaicin powder content (p<0.05), while the pH did not show any significant changes. As for the colors, the L value and b value decreased as more capsaicin powder was added, while the a value increased. The spread factor also increased significantly with the increase of capsaicin powder (p<0.01). Although the hardness increased with capsaicin powder content, no statistically significant differences were observed among the various cookies. In the sensory evaluation, Cookies containing 40 mg of capsaicin obtained the highest score in color, while cookies containing 150 mg of capsaicin showed the highest score in taste, texture, and overall acceptability.

  • A book review expands readers' choice of resources by providing them with the contents and bibliographic data of various books. It also functions as a reader support service designed to enrich their reading experiences. In particular, in the field of children's reading, literary devices are used to convey knowledge and information to children. Therefore, a review for a children's book should help children follow a book with further readings so that they can expand their literary imagination through comparative reading. In light of the above, this study looks into the case of a children's story entitled Little Red Riding Hood to identify the points that should be addressed in the "Literature Comparison" section of a book review in order to suggest further readings to readers. First, the review should provide an objective description of the content of Little Red Riding Hood. Second, it should explain the literary value of the reviewed book and the discourse that surrounds it so as to analyze its unique features that separate it from other literary works. Third, the review should provide bibliographic information on other works that use narrative structures adapted from those of Little Red Riding Hood. Fourth, it should broaden readers' choice and access by introducing, if any, works adapted from Little Red Riding Hood into other media.

  • The output and usage rate of audio-visual materials have sharply increased as the information industry advances and diverse archives became available. However, the awareness of the audio-visual archives are more of a separate record with collateral value. The organizations that hold these materials have very weak system of the various areas such as the categories and archiving methods. Moreover, the management system varies among the organizations, so the users face difficulty retrieving and utilizing the audio-visual materials. Thus, this study examined the feasibility of the synchronized management of audio-visual archives by comparing the descriptive elements of the audio-visual archives in internal key agencies. The study thereby examines the feasibility of the metadata element of the organizations and that of synchronized management to propose the effect of the use of management, retrieval and service of efficient AV materials. The study also proposes the improvement of descriptive element of metadata.

  • The most important goal of records management is to document the administrative responsibility of the institution producing records and its history. For this purpose, each institution needs to make a plan determining kind and value of phenomena and evidences to be documented, that is, a plan for documentation. This study was aimed to present its necessity and stretagy, focussing on the documentation of correlations with external factors surrounding National Assembly (external relations). Through literature survey, external relation functions of congress and important sources associated with their functions were analyzed. and what records were produced from those sources was investigated in the case of U.S. Congress. Comparing with the present state of National Assembly on this basis, four significant subjects to activate the external relations documentation plan in the point of institutional policy of National Assembly were proposed : legislation of documentation program of external relations, acquisition policy, advocacy enforcement for National Assembly Documentation, and establishment of cooperation and support systems with external factors.

  • The citation analysis is not applied to group measurements but to individual papers finding their impact factors among citation chains which are created by tracing citing-cited relationship between any two papers in data set. The individual impact factor is measured by adding each value derived from citation chain. Each paper's impact factor index is calculated by adding the values of each index by direct citing-cited relationship, and the values of each impact factor made by indirectly influencing to the papers in the citation chain. The research introduces a grace period, in which the system holds the papers not cited by other papers yet, but are expected to be cited within this period. Eventually not cited papers after the grace period would be eliminated by the system. The experiment suggests a reasonable database in which the highly influenced papers are gathered, and could be serviced in stead of buying databases filled with worthless not-cited-papers.
