Coherent tunable terahertz generation was demonstrated in periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalate crystal via difference frequency generation of femtosecond laser pulses. Simultaneous forward and backward terahertz radiations were obtained around 1.35 and 0.63 THz, respectively at low temperature. By cooling the crystal to reduce losses caused by phonon absorptions, the generated THz bandwidth was as narrow as 23GHz at the center frequency of 0.63 THz. The measurement result of temperature-dependent showed gradual intensity increase of the generated terahertz pulse and red shift of the center frequency as the temperature decrease from 291 to 143 K, but insignificant reduction of the spectral bandwidth. Furthermore, the stoichiometric crystal was very suitable for the suppression of THz loss at low temperature compared to the congruent $LiNbO_3$ crystal.

This paper presents the fabrication of surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based pressure sensor for long-term stable mechanical compression force measurement. SAW pressure sensor has many attractive features for practical pressure measurement: no battery requirement, wireless pressure detection especially at hazardous environments, and easy other functionality integrations such as temperature, humidity, and RFID. A $41^{\circ}$ YX $LiNbO_3$ piezoelectric substrate was used because of its high SAW propagation velocity and large values of electromechanical coupling factors $K^2$. A silicon substrate with $\~200{\mu}m$ deep cavity was bonded to the diaphragm with epoxy, in which gold was covered all over the inner cavity in order to confine electromagnetic energy inside the sensor, and provide good isolation of the device from its environment. The reflection coefficient $S_{11}$ was measured using network analyzer. High S/N ratio, sharp reflected peaks, and clear separation between the peaks were observed. As a mechanical compression force was applied to the diaphragm from top with extremely sharp object, the diaphragm was bended, resulting in the phase shifts of the reflected peaks. The phase shifts were modulated depending on the amount of applied mechanical compression force. The measured $S_{11}$ results showed a good agreement with simulated results obtained from equivalent admittance circuit modeling.

Lead-free piezoelectric ceramic/epoxy composites with '0-3' connectivity were prepared by cold-pressing with a temperature controlled curing method. A ceramic powder with a composition of $(Na_{0.51}K_{0.47}Li_{0.02})(Nb_{0.8}Ta_{0.2})O_3$ was synthesized by a conventional solid state reaction route. The dielectric and piezoelectric properties of ceramic/epoxy composites were characterized as a function of the volume fraction (${\phi}$) of piezoelectric ceramics, which was varied from 70 to 95 vol%. The results indicated that the piezoelectric properties of composites were significantly affected by the volume fraction of ceramics. In terms of the piezoelectric properties, specimens showed the best performance at ${\phi}$= 85 vol%, resulting in the piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ of 39 pC/N and the figure of merit as a piezoelectric energy harvester ($d_{33}{\cdot}g_{33}$) of 1.24 $pm^2/N$.
The optimum conditions of second harmonic generation (SHG) can be successfully achieved experimentally using single pass and double pass methods of a pumping beam. The beam has a power of several Watts radiated by a DOFA (Diode Laser Oscillator & Fiber Amplifier) system, which is a high power CW wavelength tunable infrared laser system, in a PPLN (Periodically Poled MgO doped Lithium Niobate) nonlinear crystal. In the case of a single pass method, the parameters are the wavelength of 535 nm for SHG and the output power of 245 mW generated from the pumping input beam with wavelength of 1070 nm and the power of 2.45 W at phase matching temperature of $108.9^{\circ}C$. The conversion efficiency of SHG was 10%. In order to enhance the output of SHG, the double pass method of the SHG system of a PPLN using a concave mirror for the retroreflection and a pair of wedged flat windows for phase compensation was also presented. In this double pass system, we obtained the SHG output beam with the wavelength of 535 nm and the maximum power of 383 mW at optimum phase matching temperature of $108.5^{\circ}C$ by using an incident pumping beam with wavelength of 1070 nm and the power of 2.45 W. The maximum conversion efficiency is 15.6%, which is more than that of the single pass method.

Piezoresistive-type, capacitive-type, and optical-type sensors have mainly been used for measuring a strain. However, in building a sensor network for remote monitoring using these conventional sensors there are disadvantages such as the complexity of a measuring system including wireless communication circuitry and high cost. In this paper, we demonstrates a highly-sensitive surface acoustic wave (SAW) strain sensor which is advantageous to harsh environments and wireless network. We designed and fabricated the SAW strain sensor. The SAW strain sensor attached on a specimen was tested with a tensile tester. The strain on the sensor surface was measured with a commercial strain gauge and compared with that obtained from strain analysis. The central frequency shift of the SAW sensor was measured with a network analyzer. The sensitivity of the SAW strain sensor is 134 $Hz/{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ which is high compared to previous results.
Ultrasonic motors provide high torques and quick responses compared to their magnetic counterparts; therefore, they are widely used in small-scale applications such as mobile phones, microrobots, and auto-focusing modules in digital cameras. To determine the feasibility of lead-free piezoceramics for ultrasonic motor applications, we fabricated a ring-type piezoceramic with a KNN-based lead-free piezoceramic (referred to as CZ5), intended for use in an auto-focusing module of a digital camera. The vibration of the lead-free stator was observed at 45.1 kHz. It is noteworthy that the fully assembled lead-free ultrasonic motor exhibited a revolution speed of 5-7 rpm, even though impedance matching with neighboring components was not considered. This result suggests that the tested KNN-based piezoceramic has great potential for use in ultrasonic motor applications, requiring minimal modifications to existing lead-based systems.
Since more than two decades, the conventional PD detecting systems have been employed in order to detect the partial discharges occurring inside the HV power apparatus for their diagnosis by use of different type of detection such as acoustic and UHF detection method. Regardless of their wide on-site application, a certain number of technical inconveniences have been disclosed as follows : multistage amplification. large volume, susceptible to external noise and high price. In this respect, the optical measurement techniques are widely proposed in these days in this concerned field ascribed to the following advantages : immune to external EMI noise and broad band response of the Pockels cell covering from DC to GHz. However, the reliability of several proposed techniques enabling to measure the electric field inside the large high power apparatus has not yet been well approved In this work, an optical measuring system, based on the Pockels effect, has been developed for measuring the field variation due to the corona discharges occurring in air and in oil. This system consists of He-Ne laser, single mode optical fiber, multi mode optical fiber, polarizing film, Y-cut LiNbO3 cell, photo detector, digital oscilloscope and personal computer with GPIB. For this purpose, optical probe has been specially designed and realized and put into the needle-plane electrode. Afterward, same measurement is carried out in oil. We demonstrate the characteristic of the optical measuring system and the measurement results.
Fiber-optic comb filters using a side-polished fiber coupler are proposed as multi-channel isolation filters on wavelength division multiplexing systems. We have demonstrated that the coupling efficiency between two waveguides is improved by the intermediate coupling layer in spite of the decrease of the optical power transfer between two waveguides due to the high-order modes of the overlay waveguide coupled with the side-polished single-mode fiber. When LiNbO$_3$with a 200-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-thickness was applied as a planar-overlay-waveguide, the comb filtering characteristics with a 4 nm-channel-spacing were achieved and the maximum power coupling occurred at the 1-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-thickness and the refractive index in range 1.52 to 1.53 of an intermediate coupling layer. If the intermediate coupling layer is optimized, an extinction ratio with more than 20 dB can be obtained. These experimental results are in good agreement with the BPM simulation.

We have experimentally demonstrated sum-frequency generation (SFG) in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal, using a mode-locked picosecond-pulsed fiber laser and a continuous-wave (CW) diode laser with a narrow linewidth. The mode-locked fiber laser had a center wavelength of 1560.7 nm and a spectral width of 1.1 nm, and the CW diode laser had a center wavelength of 1551.0 nm and a spectral width of 6 MHz. To effectively realize SFG, both of the spatial modes of the two lasers were made to overlap in the PPLN crystal by using a single-mode optical fiber. The pulse-mode SFG with pulsed- and CW-mode lasers was successfully observed in the spectral and time domains. These results are expected to be applicable in various ways, such as optical frequency measurement and high-resolution laser spectroscopy studies using optical frequency combs.

Cretaceous intrusive and extrusive rocks are widely distributed in the southwestern part of the Korean peninsula, possibly the result of intensive magmatism which occurred in response to subduction of the western proto-Pacific plate beneath the north-eastern part of the Eurasian plate. Geochemical and petrological study on the Cretaceous granitic rocks were carried out in order to constrain the petrogenesis of the granitic magma and to establish the paleotectonic environment of the area. Whole rock chemical data of the granitic rocks from the study area indicate that the all the rocks have characteristics of calc-alkaline series in the subalkaline field. The overall geochemical features show systematic variations in each granitic body, but the source materials of each granitic body are thought to have been different in their chemical composition. Higher values of $Fe_2O_3/FeO$ of the granitic rocks in the western area suggest that the granitoids had been solidified under highly oxidizing environment. The granitic bodies in the eastern area also show higher contents of Li, Ni, Co, Sr, Cr, Sc and lower Rb and Nb compared to the those of the western area. Chondrite normalized REE patterns show generally enriched LREE and strong negative Eu anomalies in the western wet while slight to flat Eu anomalies in the east-ern area. The REE and $(La/Lu)_{CN}$ of the granites are $60{\~}499ppm$ and $8.9{\~}66$ correspond to the range of the continental margin granite. On the ANK vs. ACNK and tectonic discrimination diagrams, parental magma type of the granites corresponds to I-type, VAG and syn-collision granite. Interpretations of the chemical characteristics of the granitic rocks favor their emplacement in a compressional tectonic regime at continental margin during the subduction of proto-Pacific plate.
