Growth and structural properties of ZnO co-doped Er :$ LiNbO_3$ thin films by liquid phase epitaxy method (LPE법에 의한 ZnO co-doped Er :$ LiNbO_3$, 박막의 성장 및 구조적 특성)

  • ZnO co-doped Er:$LiNbO_3$ single crystal thin films have been grown on $LiNbO_3$ (001) substrate by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) method. The melts of ZnO co-doped Er:$LiNbO_3$ was fixed $Er_2O_3$, concentration (1 mol%) and different ZnO concentrations 3 and 5 mol%. The crystallinity of ZnO co-doped Er :$LiNbO_3$ films became better than the $LiNbO_3$ substrate. At ZnO 5 mol% concentration, the surface of ZnO co-doped Er:$LiNbO_3$ film is affected by compressive stress along both the perpendicular and the parallel direction. Also the surface of ZnO 3 mol% co-doped Er:$LiNbO_3$film is smoother than the original $LiNbO_3$ substrate surface.

  • The 5 mol% ZnO doped $LiNbO_3$ film and the 2 mol% MgO doped $LiNbO_3$ film were grown on the $LiNbO_3$ (001) substrate by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) method with $Li_2CO_3-V_2O_5$ flux system. The crytsallinity and the lattice mismatch between $Zn:LiNbO_3$, film and $Mg:LiNbO_3$, film were analyzed by x-ray rocking curve (XRC). In addition, the ZnO and MgO distribution in the cross-section of the multilayer thin films was observed using electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA).

  • The applicability of $LiNbO_{3}$ as a substrate for fabrication of Ti-indiffused waveguide electro-optic devices is limited. Ti diffuses comparatively in congruently melting $LiNbO_{3}$; the Curie temperature of this material is too low to permit diffusion temperatures much above $1100^{\circ}C$ without the necessity of re-poling the crystal. Both of hese difficulties could be eliminated by incorporating certain dopants in $LiNbO_{3}$. Crystals of $LiNbO_{3}$ doped with Ti and Mg were grown and evaluated. The electroptic coefficients and birefringence of $LiNbO_{3}$ doped crystals were measured at ${\lambda}=.6328$ and $1.32\;$\mu{m}$. Curie temperatures were measured. The Curie temperature of both undoped and Ti-doped $LiNbO_{3}$ was $1130^{\circ}C$; that for Mg-doped $LiNbO_{3}$ was $30^{\circ}$ higher. From these data, a composition for the crystals was estimated. Thermogravimetric data confirmed this estimate and showed that the composition of Mg : $LiNbO_{3}$ was $49.3{\pm}0.2mole%\;Li_{2}O$ ; the composition of the undoped and Ti : $LiNbO_{3}$ samples was $48.6{\pm}0.2mole%$. Diffusion of Ti into both Mg-doped and Ti-doped $LiNbO_{3}$ crystals was studied as a function of $Li/NbO_{3}$ ratio and temperature.

A study on the lattice defects in $LiNbO_3$ single crystal by crystal by $OH^-$ absorption band ($OH^-$ 흡수밴드에 의한 $LiNbO_3$ 단결정의 격자결함에 관한 연구)

  • For the applications in optical waveguides and devices, LiNbO_3$ single crystals need to overcome the weakness of optical damage due to the inhomogeneities of laser-induced refractive index. This problem can be solved by doping of Mg in LiNbO_3$ and proton exchange of LiNbO_3$. In this study, to understand the mechanism of optical damage resistance in LiNbO_3$, the changes of lattice defects in LiNbO_3$ caused by MgO doping and acid treatment were observed indirectly by $OH^-$ absorption bands using a FT-IR spectrophotometer. The effect of lattice defects on temperature, heat-treatment and polishing were also investigated. It is shown that MgO doping increases optical damage resistance by generating the defects of $Mg_{Nb}^{2+}$ in the lattice of LiNbO_3$, and that proton exchange by implantation of $H^+$ ion in the hexagonally closest packed oxygen layers on the surface of LiNbO_3$, makes lattice defects, which diffuse into the crystal after heat-treatment above $400^{\circ}C$.

  • The effect of dopant and stoichiometry on the physical and optical properties of $LiNbO_{3}$ were studied. We prepared three samples, undoped, MgO doped $LiNbO_{3}$ with congruent composition and near-stoichiometric $LiNbO_{3}$. Dielectric constant and transmittance in UV/VIS/IR light range were measured. The results showed that the features for high [Li]/[Nb] were similar to those for low [Li]/[Nb] but with high [Mg].

Fabrication of $Fe:LiNbO_3$ Waveguides and Their Photorefractive Properties ($Fe:LiNbO_3$ 도파로의 제작 및 광굴절 특성)

  • In this paper, we study the photorefractive properties of Fe indiffused $LiNbO_3$ waveguides. Comparing the photorefractive properties of $Fe:LiNbO_3$ with those of $LiNbO_3$, we confirm the increase of the diffraction efficiency and the sensitivity by Fe doping. Also for the photorefractive properties of $Fe:LiNbO_3$ waveguides with different ambient gases, the diffaction efficiency and the sensitivity of $Fe:LiNbO_3$ indifused in pure argon gases are the highest and its decay time is the shortest. Therefore, it is recommended that pure argon gases be used in Fe indiffusion process for good optical switches with photorefractive effect.

Temperature and DC Electric Field Dependence of Second Harmonic Generation in Mg:$LiNbO_3$ (Mg:$LiNbO_3$ 에서 제2고조파발생의 온도 및 직류전장 의존도)

  • Spatial homogenity of Mg (4 mole %):LiNb$O_3$ is investigated by studying the characteristic of Second Harmonic Generation in Mg:LiNb$O_3$ as a function of temperature and DC Electric Field. It is found that the temperaturs at which the intensity of the second harmonic is reduced to the first zero from its maximum for the phase matching condition is shifted linearly to the strength of DC Electric field applied to optic axis of Mg:LiNb$O_3$. From these results, the electro-optic coefficient of Mg:LiNb$O_3$ is estimated to be higher than that of Congruent LiNb$O_3$ by a factor of 1.5.

  • Single crystals of LiNbO3 have found extensive application in electro-optic and nonlinear optic devices. However, laser-induced refartive index inhomogeneities, which have been labeled opical damage impose limits on device optical damage in LiNbO3 is imporved if more than 4.5 rml% MgO is added to the melt The laser damage thrueshold increased as much as 100 times better then that of undoped crystals. The MgO doped cystal has thus been urterlsiv81y studied since then. In the study, Mgo:LiNbOs(MLA) single crystals dopsd with 0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 mol% MgO have been grown by the czocrualski technique. The metls were prepared in the platinum crluible and 15∼20mm diameter crystals were grown with a length of 20∼30mm in a resitance heater. The growth rate was 2.5mm/hr, the rotation speed 15rpn. Before sawing MLN single crystals were annealed for 24 hours under atmosphere at a temperature of 1080℃. After sawing, we have found an annual ring cross section of MNA crystals only in the direction of perpendicilar to the c-axis. Nonuniform dispusion of MgO was pointed out that the cuties of the state of oxide were strongly affected by oxygen partial pressure in.

  • Congruent $LiNbO_3$ crystals with doped Mg and codoped with Mn or Fe were grown by the Czochralski method. It is known that the physical properties of $LiNbO_3$ depend strongly on the addition of Mg and transition metals. This is established by studying the following properties; XRD patterns, the phase transition temperature, energy of the fundamental absorption edge, the shape of the absorption band of the $OH^-$ vibration and lines of the ESR of $Fe^{3+},\; Mn^{2+}$. The position of the UV absorption edge and the shape and peak point of the absorption band of the $OH^-$ vibrational band changed monotonously up to a critical concentration of $Mg^{2+}$ ions. The mechanism of the incorporation of Mg ions changes at this concentration. The transition temperature was estimated by measuring the dielectric temperature behavior up to $1230^{\circ}C$ in a frequency range of 100Hz to 10MHz. EPR of $Mn^{2+}\;and\; Fe^{3+}$ ions were employed to investigated the Mg doping effects in the $LiNbO_3$ crystal. The increase of linewidths and the asymmetry of signals were observed in all crystals. New signals of $Fe^{3+}$ arising from the new centers were observed I the heavily Mg-doped crystals.

  • The electrical and optical properties of the annealed $LiNbO_{3}$ single crystal with congruently melting composition and MgO or ZnO doped $LiNbO_{3}$ single crystal grown by the FZ method. The electrical and optical properties such as electrical conductivity, dielectric constant (Curie temperature), electro-mechanical coupling factor, optical transmittance and refractive indices of the grown crystals were measured and the nonlinear refractive indices of the grown crystals were calculated theoretically. The doping effects of MgO and ZnO were investigated by comparing the electrical and optical properties of the undoped $LiNbO_{3}$ single crystal and those of the $LiNbO_{3}$ single crystals doped with MgO or ZnO.
