Enhanced Electrochemical Properties of Surface Modified LiMn2O4 by Li-Fe Composites for Rechargeable Lithium Ion Batteries

  • The surface modified $LiMn_2O_4$ materials with Li-Fe composites were prepared by a sol-gel method to improve the electrochemical performance of $LiMn_2O_4$ and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)-EDS. XRD results indicate that all the samples (modified and pristine samples) have cubic spinel structures, and XRD, XPS, and TEM-EDS data reveal the formation of $Li(Li_xFe_xMn_{2-2x})O_4$ solid solution on the surface of particles. For the electrochemical properties, the modified material demonstrated dramatically enhanced reversibility and stability even at elevated temperature. These improvements are attributed to the formation of the solid solution, and thus-formed solid solution phase on the surface of $LiMn_2O_4$ particle reduces the dissolution of Mn ion and suppresses the Jahn-Teller effect.

Effect of Li3BO3 Additive on Densification and Ion Conductivity of Garnet-Type Li7La3Zr2O12 Solid Electrolytes of All-Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries

  • In this study, we investigate the effect of the$Li_3BO_3$ additive on the densification and ionic conductivity of garnet-type $Li_7La_3Zr_2O_{12}$ solid electrolytes for all-solid-state lithium batteries. We analyze their densification behavior with the addition of $Li_3BO_3$ in the range of 2-10 wt.% by dilatometer measurements and isothermal sintering. Dilatometry analysis reveals that the sintering of $Li_7La_3Zr_2O_{12}-Li_3BO_3$ composites is characterized by two stages, resulting in two peaks, which show a significant dependence on the $Li_3BO_3$ additive content, in the shrinkage rate curves. Sintered density and total ion conductivity of the system increases with increasing $Li_3BO_3$ content. After sintering at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 8 h, the $Li_7La_3Zr_2O_{12}-8$ wt.% $Li_3BO_3$ composite shows a total ionic conductivity of $1.61{\times}10^{-5}Scm^{-1}$, while that of the pure $Li_7La_3Zr_2O_{12}$ is only $5.98{\times}10^{-6}Scm^{-1}$.

  • High nickel layered oxide cathodes are gaining increasing attention for lithium-ion batteries due to their higher energy density and lower cost compared to LiCoO2. However, they suffer from the formation of residual lithium on the surface in the form of LiOH and Li2CO3 on exposure to ambient air. The residual lithium causes notorious issues, such as slurry gelation during electrode preparation and gas evolution during cell cycling. In this review, we investigate the residual lithium issues through its impact on cathode slurry instability based on deformed polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) as well as its formation and reduction mechanism in terms of inherently off-stoichiometric synthesis of high nickel cathodes. Additionally, new analysis method with anhydrous methanol was introduced to exclude Li+/H+ exchange effect during sample preparation with distilled water. We hope that this review would contribute to encouraging the academic efforts to consider practical aspects and mitigation in global high-energy-density lithium-ion battery manufacturers.

  • Batteries are critical components of electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The connection of a battery to the power grid for charge and discharge greatly affects energy storage. Therefore, an accurate and easy-to-observe battery model should be established to achieve systematic design, simulation, and SOC (state of charge) estimations. In this review, several equivalent circuit models of representative significance are explained, and their respective advantages and disadvantages are compared to determine and outline their reasonable applications to Li-ion batteries. Numerous commonly used model parameter identification principles are summarized as well, and basic model verification methods are briefly introduced for the convenient use of such models.

  • Flame retardant(FR) properties were investigated with tricredyl phosphate(TCP) and tris(pentafluorophenyl)phosphine(TFPP) as additives for lithium-ion batteries. Thermal stability was improved with additives in $Li/LiNi\frac{1}{3}Mn\frac{1}{3}Co\frac{1}{3}O_2$ cells comparing to non-additive electrolytes. Oxygen evolution reaction of the cathode material was delayed to up $55^{\circ}C$, from $275^{\circ}C\;to\;330^{\circ}C$. Electrolytes with the 1 wt.% additives provided good FR properties while the resonable battery performance is maintained.

Non-isolated Boost Charger for the Li-Ion Batteries Suitable for Fuel Cell Powered Laptop Computers

  • The conventional non-isolated boost converter has some drawbacks such as poor dynamic performance and a discontinuous output current, which make it unsuitable for battery charging applications. In spite of its compactness and lightness, it is not preferred as a charger of portable electronic devices. In this paper, a non-isolated boost converter topology for Li-ion batteries suitable for fuel cell powered laptop computers is proposed and analyzed. The proposed converter has an additional inductor at the output to make a continuous output current. This feature makes it suitable for charger applications by eliminating the disadvantages of the conventional non-isolated boost converter mentioned above. A prototype of the proposed converter is built for the Li-ion battery charger of a laptop computer to prove the validity and advantages of the proposed topology.

  • Various Si-Fe-Al ternary alloys were prepared with the same amount of Si by the melt spinning technique. The feasibility of the capacity prediction approach based on the estimation of the active amount of Si using the phase diagram was practically examined and reported. These predictions were verified by the electrochemical test of fabricated coin cells and other characterization methods. The capacity prediction approach using the phase diagram might be a fundamental and efficient method to accelerate the practical application of Si-based alloys as the anode material for Li-ion batteries. The details on the prediction procedure were discussed.

  • A hybrid sinusoidal-pulse current (HSPC) charging method for the Li-ion batteries in electric vehicle applications is proposed in this paper. The HSPC charging method is based on the Li-ion battery ac-impedance spectrum analysis, while taking into account the high power requirement and system integration. The proposed HSPC method overcomes the power limitation in the sinusoidal ripple current (SRC) charging method. The charger shares the power devices in the motor inverter for hardware cost saving. Phase shifting in multiple pulse currents is employed to generate a high frequency multilevel charging current. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed HSPC method improves the charger efficiency related to the hardware and the battery energy transfer efficiency.

Ni added Si-Al Alloys with Enhanced Li+ Storage Performance for Lithium-Ion Batteries

  • Here, we report on nanocrystalline Si-Al-M (M = Fe, Cu, Ni, Zr) alloys for use as an anode for lithium-ion batteries, which were fabricated via a melt-spinning method. Based on the XRD and TEM analyses, it was found that the Si-Al-M alloys consist of nanocrystalline Si grains surrounded by an amorphous matrix phase. Among the Si-Al-M alloys with different metal composition, Ni-incorporated Si-Al-M alloy electrode retained the high discharge capacity of 2492 mAh/g and exhibited improved cyclability. The superior $Li^+$ storage performance of Si-Al-M alloy with Ni component is mainly responsible for the incorporated Ni, which induces the formation of ductile and conductive inactive matrix with crystalline Al phase, in addition to the grain size reduction of active Si phase.

  • Silicon (Si) has attracted considerable attention due to its high theoretical capacity compared to conventional graphite anode materials. However, Si-based anode materials suffer from rapid capacity loss due to mechanical failure caused by large volume change during cycling. To alleviate this phenomenon, crosslinked polymeric binders with strong interactions are highly desirable to ensure the electrode integrity. In this study, thermally crosslinked polyimide binders were used for Si-alloy anodes in Li-ion batteries. The crosslinked polyimide binder was found to have high adhesion strength, resulting in enhanced electrode integrity during cycling. Therefore, the Si-alloy anodes with crosslinked polyimide binder provide enhanced electrochemical performance, such as Coulombic efficiency, capacity retention, and cycle stability.
