  • Chemical composition, and mineral and heavy metal contents of Yeomsan and Baekso sun-dried salts (1-5-year-old) were determined. Moisture contents (Yeomsan, 6.07-17.02%; Baekso, 4.29-16.15%) and pH (Yeomsan, 5.92-6.31; Baekso, 5.52-6.23) decreased as age of salts increased, while NaCl contents (Yeomsan, 80.35-92.74%; Baekso, 81.06-94.58%) increased with increasing storage period of salts. Older salts had lower content of water-insoluble matters. Nitrate content was not affected by aging of salts, whereas nitrite content was lower in older salts. Sulfate content of sun-dried salt decreased with aging of salt. Average concentrations (ppm wet weight) of major minerals in Yeomsan and Baekso sun-dried salts were: Mg, Mg, 1002-119; K, 1062-3411; Ca, 1503-3437; Li, 25-101; Ge, 8.35-0.21; Si, 43.99-6.48; and Mn, 6.79-1.55. Mineral content generally decreased with salt aging. Among heavy metals, Hg was not detected in all salts, and Cd (0.02-0.04ppm) was not affected by storage period. Pb was not detected in 5-year-old salts. Older salts showed brighter color than younger ones.

  • A new ionic liquid, 1-vinyl-3-heptylimidazolium iodide (VHpII), was synthesized and applied as a redox electrolyte for dye-sensitized solar cells. The chemical structure of the synthesized VHpII was confirmed using $^1H$ NMR. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the VHpII was stable for thermal stress of up to $250^{\circ}C$. The energy conversion efficiencies of the VHpII-based dye-sensitized solar cells were investigated in terms of the effect of a lithium iodide addition. A solar cell containing the redox couple of VHpII and iodine showed a conversion efficiency of 2.63% under 1 sun light intensity at AM 1.5. Adding 0.4 M LiI results in a conversion efficiency of 3.63%, which was an improvement of about 40%. The increased conversion efficiency was ascribed to an increase in external quantum efficiency.

  • Colloidal gold with a conducting polymer (e.g., polyaniline) bound on the metal surfaces has been used for the generation of conductimetric signal in a membrane strip immunosensor. Since polyaniline itself at a low pH range revealed a low conductivity, an approach of doping the polymer with a lithium salt was used. As an alternative method, a self-doped (i.e., pH-independent) sustance such as leucoemeraldine base sulfonated polyaniline (LEB-SPAN) can be used as signal generator. It was also highly soluble in water and, thus, such a selected polymer was expected to support a satisfactory property as a label of the immunosensor.

  • Two computational methods for determining equilibrium states for the Mark-IV electrorefiner (ER) have been assessed to improve the current computational electrorefiner model developed at University of Idaho. Both methods were validated against measured data to better understand their effects on the calculation of the equilibrium compositions in the ER. In addition, a sensitivity study was performed on the effect of specific unknown activity coefficients-including sodium in molten cadmium, zirconium in molten cadmium, and sodium chloride in molten LiCl-KCl. Both computational methods produced identical results, which stayed within the 95% confidence interval of the experimental data. Furthermore, sensitivity to unavailable activity coefficients was found to be low (a change in concentration of less than 3 ppm).

  • The reaction of (E)- or (Z)-1-alkenylmercuric chlorides with acrylic acid derivatives in the presence of 10 mol% of lithium trichloropalladate ($LiPdCl_3$) and an equimolar amount of cupric chloride, as a reoxidant for the palladium, in acetonitrile at room temperature gave the corresponding (E,E)- or (E,Z)-2,4-dienoic acid derivatives stereospecifically in moderate to good yields. The reaction of (E)- or (Z)-3-chloromercuripropenoic acid with olefins under the reaction condintion described above similarly gave good yields of (E,E)- or (Z,E)-2,4-dienoic acids stereospecifically. A side reaction, the homocoupling of alkenylmercuric chlorides, could be minimized by employing the condition described above. However, in the reaction of 3-chloromercuripropenoic acid with olefins under the present condition, the homocoupled side reaction product was not produced.

  • U/RE was electrochemically recovered to LCC at $50mA/cm^2$ from LiCl-KCl salt containing $0.5wt%UCl_3$, $0.22wt%NdCl_3$, 0.15wt%$CeCl_3$ and $0.07wt%LaCl_3$. The Cd in the LCC deposit was removed during the distillation using Cd distiller. U/RE product of 107g obtained from the distiller was installed to TG and then heated to $1200^{\circ}C$ to be consolidated. Dense U/RE metal ingot was not acquired through the consolidation process because U/RE product had been partially already oxidized during the distillation process.

  • Reaction of $(E)-{\beta}-chloro-{\gamma}$-hydroxyvinylmercurials, prepared by mercuration of propargyl alcohol and 2-methyl-3-butyne-2-ol, with olefins in the presence of a catalytic amount of $Li_2PdCl_4$ and 2 equiv of cupric chloride in methanol at $50^{\circ}C$ gave the corresponding (E,E)-2,4-dienols in moderate yields. However, addition of 1 equiv of inorganic bases such as magnesium oxide to the reaction mixture brings a rapid and clean vinylation and gave high yields of the dienols at room temperature. In the case of hindered (E)-2-chloro-3-chloromercuri-2-buten-1,4-diol prepared from 2-butyne-1,4-diol, reaction with olefins gave the dienols only in low yields even in the presence of 2 equiv of magnesium oxide.

  • In northern China, abundant summer rainfall and a higher water table can weaken the soil due to salt heave, collapsibility, and increased moisture absorption, thus the chlorine saline soil (silty clay) needs to be stabilized prior to use in road embankments. To optimize chlorine saline soil stabilizing programs, unconfined compressive strength tests were conducted on soil treated with five different stabilizers before and after soaking, followed by field compaction test and unconfined compressive strength test on a trial road embankment. In situ testing were performed with the stabilized soils in an expressway embankment, and the results demonstrated that the stabilized soil with lime and SH agent (an organic stabilizer composed of modified polyvinyl alcohol and water) is suitable for road embankments. The appropriate addition ratio of stabilized soil is 10% lime and 0.9% SH agent. SH agent wrapped soil particles, filled soil pores, and generated a silk-like web to improve the moisture stability, strength, and stress-strain performance of stabilized soil.
