In this study, the Model of Emotion Evaluation, an emotional analysis actively applied in environmental assessment, was divided into two parts, the abbreviated model and the inferential model, through pilot study and experiment. In addition, an analysis was conducted through the experiment on the attributes of the evaluation vocabularies of two additional types of representative models, the EPA Model and PAD Model, and the results show a huge difference in the development approach and lexical constitution of the two models. It was also identified through factor analysis that the vocabularies were abbreviated according to the respective models. Similarity relationships were analyzed using multidimensional scaling and the results show that mutual relationship was established to some degree. Based on this, we can conclude that, rather than a biased use of the Model of Emotion Evaluation in emotion evaluation, a more objective image analysis is possible by analyzing the characteristics of the model before applying it. In this study, the evaluation target was confined only to the environmental assessment of streetscape and continuous research on the Model of Emotion Evaluation that allows for the comparison of evaluation models in various areas is needed.

In this paper, we observe various syntactic information for Korean parsing and propose a method to learn constraints and improve the efficiency of a parsing model by using the constraints. The proposed method has the following three characteristics. First, it improves the parsing efficiency since we use constraints that can prevent the parser from generating unsuitable candidates. Second, it is robust on a given Korean sentence because the attributes for the constraints are selected based on the syntactic and lexical idiosyncrasy of Korean. Third, it is easy to acquire constraints automatically from a treebank by using a decision tree learning algorithm. The experimental results show that the parser using acquired constraints can reduce the number of overgenerated candidates up to 1/2~1/3 of candidates and it runs 2~3 times faster than the one without any constraints.
Discourse analysis is useful for examining discourse characteristics of dementia patients and differentiating them from normal adults. However, inconsistent tasks, transcription methods and measures have been utilized, thus analyses were inevitably unsystematic. The purpose of this study was to investigate tasks, transcription methods and measures of discourse studies in dementia. Studies on dementia discourses written in English were collected via Scopus database containing abstracts and citations from 2005 to 2014, and were analyzed in detail. From the results, the most frequently used task was 'storytelling-topic'. It was observed that use of consistent transcription conventions rendered more reliable transcription data. Measures could be categorized into coherence, cohesion, productivity, propositional syntactic lexical analysis, and fluency, and each category belonged to discourse processing levels (i.e., processing of conceptual networks, propositions, and natural language units). In conclusion, future research warrants not only utilization of discourse tasks depending on dementia types and features, but also application of consistent transcription conventions. Additionally, measures based on the discourse processing theory would enable us to systematically interpret discourse studies.
The effects of the number of Hangul syllable, the nunber/location of batchim in a Hangul word, and compound/noncompound Hangul word on memory span were examined. The results were that (1) the more syllables a word had, the lower us memory span was, (2) the more batchims a two-syllable word had, the lower its memory span was (Korean batchim effect on memory span), (3) noncompound word had higher memory span than compound word. The reading speed of above mentioned words was measured and the results were that (1) the more syllables a word had, the slower its reading speed was, (2) but the reading speed of a two-syllable word was forest when it had a batchim on second syllable than when it had no batchim or had a batchim on first syllable or batchims on both syllables (Korean ending batchim effect on reading speed), (3) noncompound word was read faster thu compound word. Korean ending batchim effect on reading speed was not compatible with the explanation by articulatory loop bur compatible with the explanation by visual cache where the orthographic information was represented. The results suggest that memory span was influenced nor only by phonological information but also by orthographic information.
Korean has a pair of voiceless fricatives, whose laryngeal manifestation comes in parallel to stops and affricates with a three-way lexical contrast. Prior phonetic studies by Kagaya (1974), Iverson (1983), and Kang (1999, 2000) point out /s/ is associated with multiple characteristics of the larynx shared with not only the lax but also the aspirated series, whereas /s' / carries a laryngeal distinction typical of the tense consonants. The complex dual nature of /s/ is again supported by a psycholinguistic study by Kang (2004), as /s/ was found to interact with /$c^h$/ (17% of the time) as well as /c/ (57%) in speech errors. In addition, a recent work by Cho and Lee (2003) notes an interesting chain shift case in the acquisition of the fricatives. Although they observed a significant phonological pattern between child English and Korean, Cho and Lee's description of acquiring fricatives is far from being precise from the perspective of phonetics. From a longitudinal study of recorded tapes by two children at 1;7-3;8 and 1;7-2;1 respectively, I found that /s' / was usually substituted into tense noncontinuants in young children's early production as predicted, whereas /s/ having both lax and aspirated-like glottal properties revealed a complicated pattern of substitutions into lax, tense, and aspirated noncontinuants with a varying degree of preference relative to the subjects. The current acquisition study supports the previous claims concerning fricatives in other languages, showing that their acquisition comes after stops. Besides, it also notes that Korean fricatives are subject to a series of phonological processes called stopping, affricating, tensifying and palatalizing during the transitional period of phonological development by young children. Moreover, between the two voiceless types, /s/ was acquired earlier than /s'/ as the unmarked segment.
Generalized LR parsing is one of the enhanced LR parsing methods so that it overcome the limit of one-way linear stack of the traditional LR parser using graph-structured stack, and it has been playing an important role of a firm starting point to generate other variations for NL parsing equipped with various mechanisms. In this paper, we propose a conditional Action Model that can solve the problems of conventional probabilistic GLR methods. Previous probabilistic GLR parsers have used relatively limited contextual information for disambiguation due to the high complexity of internal GLR stack. Our proposed model uses Surface Phrasal Types representing the structural characteristics of the parse for its additional contextual information, so that more specified structural preferences can be reflected into the parser. Experimental results show that our GLR parser with the proposed Conditional Action Model outperforms the previous methods by about 6-7% without any lexical information, and our model can utilize the rich stack information for syntactic disambiguation of probabilistic LR parser.

This paper presents a morphological analysis method for the Korean language. The characteristics and adjacency information of the words can be obtained from sentences in a large corpus. Generally a word can be analyzed to a result by applying the adjacency attributes and rules. However, we have to choose one from the several results for the ambiguous words. The collected morpheme's adjacency attributes and relations with neighbor words are recorded in a well designed dictionaries. With this information, abbreviated words as well as ambiguous words can be almost analyzed successfully. Efficiency of morphological analyzer depends on the information in the dictionaries. A morpheme dictionary and a phrase dictionary have been designed with lexical database, and necessary information extracted from the corpus is stored in the dictionaries.
Coordinate constructions in natural language pose a number of difficulties to natural language processing units, due to the increased complexity of syntactic analysis, the syntactic ambiguity of the involved lexical items, and the apparent deletion of predicates in various places. In this paper, we address the syntactic characteristics of the coordinate constructions in Korean from the viewpoint of constructing a competence grammar, and present a version of combinatory categorial grammar for the analysis of coordinate constructions in Korean. We also show how to utilize a unified lexicon in the proposed grammar formalism in deriving the sentential semantics and associated information structures as well, in order to capture the discourse functions of coordinate constructions in Korean. The presented analysis conforms to the common wisdom that coordinate constructions are utilized in language not simply to reduce multiple sentences to a single sentence, but also to convey the information of contrast. Finally, we provide an analysis of sample corpora for the frequency of coordinate constructions in Korean and discuss some problematic cases.
This paper is based on a comparative analysis of the Korean act subject marks '-에게(한테), -로, -에' and Chinese passive marks '被[$b{\grave{e}}i$]/?[$r{\grave{a}}ng$]/叫[$ji{\grave{a}}o$]/?[$g{\check{e}}i$]'. Each distribution's aspects and characteristics were examined and corresponding relationships were analyzed by comparison of these forms. The method of this comparative analysis focused on three aspects such as tangible characteristics of the two languages, selective restrictions on the 'act subject' or 'passive subject' in the passive expression, and constraints on the use of the act subject (passive) marks in the Korean passive expression by '받다'. In this comparative analysis Korean act subject markers '-에게(한테), -로, -에' and Chinese passive markers '被/?/叫/?' are always as an adverb in passive expression in combination with the act subject. Despite this common point, some differences were revealed relative to the use of the two languages. First, we reveal that the 'act subject' and the conjoined manner follow the passive expression according to characteristics of the two languages. In addition, the act subject marks of Korean passive expressions '에게/한테, -에/로' only serve as an investigative role. They are limited only to [${\pm}animate$] of the act subject. But Chinese passive markers '被/?/叫/?' are often restricted by [${\pm}animate$] of passive subject, existence and non-existence of act subject. In the Korean passive expression by '받다', it is used as act subject marks '에게/한테, -에/로' but the Chinese passive marks are restricted by the meaning of lexical items in a sentence.
Morphological analysis is the most widely used method for extracting nouns from Korean texts. For every Eojeol, in order to extract nouns from it, a morphological analyzer performs frequent dictionary lookup and applies many morphonological rules, therefore it requires many operations. Moreover, a morphological analyzer generates all the possible morphological interpretations (sequences of morphemes) of a given Eojeol, which may by unnecessary from the noun extraction`s point of view. To reduce unnecessary computation of morphological analysis from the noun extraction`s point of view, this paper proposes a method for Korean noun extraction considering noun occurrence characteristics. Noun patterns denote conditions on which nouns are included in an Eojeol or not, which are positive cues or negative cues, respectively. When using the exclusive information as the negative cues, it is possible to reduce the search space of morphological analysis by ignoring Eojeols not including nouns. Post-noun syllable sequences(PNSS) as the positive cues can simply extract nouns by checking the part of the Eojeol preceding the PNSS and can guess unknown nouns. In addition, morphonological information is used instead of many morphonological rules in order to recover the lexical form from its altered surface form. Experimental results show that the proposed method can speed up without losing accuracy compared with other systems based on morphological analysis.
